The 2011 Volvo V50 T5 is the more compelling choice when turbocharged performance and its five-cylinder character are the priority. Neither model is automatically the better purchase. A well-maintained, carefully inspected example with credible records is a better buy than a cheaper car with an uncertain history, regardless of the badge.
This comparison uses U.S.-market specifications for a 2012 TSX Sport Wagon and a 2011 V50 T5. Earlier or later model years, cars sold in other countries, different trims, and individual equipment can change the result, so verify the VIN, drivetrain, service history, recall status, and asking price of the exact car you are considering.

Which wagon suits your priorities?
Choose the TSX when simplicity and predictable utility come first
The TSX uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder rather than a turbocharger. Its 201 horsepower is lower than the Volvo’s 227, and its 170 lb-ft of torque is substantially below the V50’s 236 lb-ft, but power delivery is generally easier to understand on a test drive: there is no turbo boost to wait for and no turbo-system condition to evaluate. The five-speed automatic and front-wheel-drive layout are the only U.S. automatic configuration described for the 2012 wagon.

Acura also gives shoppers unusually clear cargo figures for this comparison: 31.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 66.2 cubic feet with those seats folded. If you regularly carry a stroller, boxes, a dog crate, or home-improvement supplies, those two measurements let you plan around the car before visiting it.
Choose the V50 T5 when torque and character matter more
The 2011 V50 T5’s turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder produces 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. That extra torque is the decisive mechanical advantage in this pairing. It can make merging, passing, and climbing grades feel more effortless than the naturally aspirated TSX, although the condition of the turbocharger, cooling system, transmission, and engine matters more than the specification sheet once these cars are used.
For 2011 in the United States, the T5 became the base front-wheel-drive V50 after Volvo discontinued the 2.4i. The 2011 T5 R-Design also dropped all-wheel drive and the manual transmission. Do not assume that every V50 advertised online has the same drivetrain: earlier years, non-U.S. cars, and different trims can be configured differently.
Powertrain and driving comparison
Acceleration and response
On paper, the Volvo has a 26-horsepower and 66-lb-ft advantage. Those figures favor the V50 for drivers who value strong mid-range response. A turbocharged engine can deliver its best shove once boost is available, so use a cold start and a full road test to check for hesitation, surging, smoke, unusual noises, or warning lights. A seller’s description of the car as “quick” is not a substitute for observing how the specific vehicle behaves.

The TSX’s naturally aspirated engine produces less torque, especially at low engine speed, but its behavior should be more linear. During a test drive, check that the engine pulls cleanly through the rev range and that the automatic transmission selects gears without flare, harsh engagement, or delayed reverse. These observations concern the individual car; they are not model-level reliability guarantees.
Drivetrain expectations
Both examples in this comparison send power to the front wheels through a five-speed automatic. That makes the two cars easier to compare than a V50 fitted with an all-wheel-drive system or manual transmission, but it does not make their equipment interchangeable. Confirm the drivetrain from the VIN and the vehicle’s identification label rather than relying on a listing headline or a seller’s memory.
Fuel economy: close estimates, different model years
Acura’s cited figures are 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The manufacturer identifies these as 2011 EPA estimates in its 2012 TSX specifications and notes that actual mileage varies. Volvo’s 2011 U.S. V50 T5 overview lists 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway; a combined estimate was not stated in that source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe highway estimates are the same and the city estimates differ by one mpg, so published economy is not a decisive reason to choose one car. The comparison also mixes a 2012 TSX specification with a 2011 V50 specification. Use the estimates as a planning baseline, then ask the owner for fuel records if available and inspect tire pressure, alignment, brakes, and warning lights. A turbocharged engine driven hard, a car with roof accessories, or a vehicle with mechanical faults can consume considerably more fuel than its label suggests.

Cargo space and everyday practicality
What the TSX measurements tell you
The TSX’s 31.5 cubic feet with the seats up is the useful number for routine shopping, luggage, or a pet behind the rear seat. Folding the seats increases the stated volume to 66.2 cubic feet. Measure the opening and floor length if you carry long, tall, or rigid items; a volume figure alone does not guarantee that a particular piece of furniture will fit.
How to interpret the V50 figure
Volvo describes the 2011 V50 as having more than 62 cubic feet of cargo space. The cited overview does not provide the same explicit seats-up and seats-down convention used by Acura, so the figures should not be treated as perfectly like-for-like. Before buying, fold the rear seats, inspect the load floor, and bring a tape measure or the largest item you expect to carry. Check the hatch, cargo-cover operation, seat-release mechanisms, and the condition of the trim and carpeting.
Practical details the specification table cannot answer
- Confirm whether the actual car has a complete cargo cover, usable tie-downs, and an intact spare-tire or inflator arrangement.
- Check that both rear seatbacks latch securely and fold without broken releases.
- Look for water intrusion, damp carpeting, or a musty odor in the cargo area.
- Inspect the hatch seal, hinges, lift supports, and rear lighting for damage or poor repairs.
- Verify the roof-rack equipment and its condition if you plan to carry bikes, skis, or a roof box.
Safety evidence and how to use it
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2012 Acura TSX Sport Wagon as a Top Safety Pick. Its listed ratings include Good results for moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength, and head-restraint and seat tests, plus a Marginal result for the driver-side small-overlap front test. IIHS notes that some wagon ratings are based on sedan testing and describes the small-overlap result as applying to 2011–2014 models.

No comparable V50-specific safety rating was confirmed for this comparison. That absence is not evidence that the V50 is safer or less safe; it simply means you should not invent a head-to-head safety conclusion from an unverified rating. Check the actual car’s airbags, warning lights, tires, brakes, and repair history.
How to inspect either car before you buy
- Get the VIN before the appointment. Use it to confirm model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, and any title or history information available in your area. A VIN also prevents a 2011 V50 with a different engine or drivetrain from being compared accidentally with the T5 described here.
- Review records in date and mileage order. Look for routine oil and filter service, transmission service, cooling-system work, brake and tire replacement, and any major engine or electrical repair. Receipts with shop names, dates, mileage, and parts are more useful than a vague “fully serviced” advertisement.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the relevant official recall lookup and ask for documentation that each campaign was completed. A historical investigation document or a generic internet statement cannot establish the recall status of the individual car.
- Inspect the car cold. Ask the seller not to warm it up before arrival. Confirm that the engine starts promptly, idles smoothly, and produces no persistent smoke, rattling, belt noise, or fluid odor. A cold start can reveal issues hidden after the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Scan the dashboard before starting. With the ignition on, confirm that the airbag, ABS, stability-control, check-engine, and other warning lamps illuminate for their self-check and then go out after starting. A lamp that never illuminates may have been disabled rather than repaired.
- Examine the body and underside. Check for corrosion at seams, subframes, suspension mounting points, brake lines, hatch edges, and door bottoms. Compare paint texture and panel alignment, and look underneath for fresh fluid, bent components, or evidence of hurried collision repair.
- Verify tires and wheels. The TSX specification calls for P225/50R17 all-season tires, but confirm the tire placard and wheel configuration on the actual car before ordering replacements. On either model, compare tread depth, look for uneven wear, check manufacturing dates, and inspect the spare or inflator equipment.
- Road-test at varied speeds. Drive from a stop, through turns, over uneven pavement, and at highway speed. Check steering-centering, braking straightness, suspension noise, wheel bearing hum, transmission shift quality, cruise control, climate control, windows, locks, lights, and the infotainment system.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Use a shop that is not financially dependent on the seller and understands the car’s systems. Request a written report with urgent safety items, near-term maintenance, diagnostic trouble codes, fluid leaks, and an estimate of necessary work.
- Price the exact car, not the model name. Account for mileage, equipment, location, tires, corrosion, accident history, records, inspection findings, and the cost of correcting defects. Current local asking prices and lifecycle repair costs were not established for this comparison, so a defensible price must come from comparable listings and the inspection report.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing the wrong years or trims
“V50” covers multiple years and configurations. The statement that the 2011 T5 is front-wheel drive does not prove that an earlier V50 is. Likewise, a TSX sedan specification is not automatically a wagon specification. Put the exact model year, body style, engine, transmission, and drive layout on your comparison sheet.
Assuming cargo numbers are directly equivalent
Acura publishes separate seats-up and seats-down numbers; Volvo’s cited figure is greater than 62 cubic feet without the same stated convention. Do not rank one cargo area from those figures alone. Test-fit the items you actually carry.

Treating a safety award as a condition report
A Top Safety Pick designation describes test performance when the vehicle was new. It does not certify an individual used car’s structure, airbags, tires, brakes, or repair quality. A complete inspection remains necessary.

Ordering parts from a generic specification
Even when a published tire size is available, wheels may have been changed or a car may carry a different approved configuration. Read the tire placard, compare the sidewall markings, and have a tire professional verify load and speed ratings before purchasing.
Letting a low price override evidence
A lower asking price can reflect mileage, deferred maintenance, corrosion, accident repairs, missing records, or a seller who wants a rapid transaction. Compare the total cost and risk revealed by the inspection rather than treating the cheapest listing as the best value.
A decision framework for the final choice
| If your highest priority is… | Start with… | What to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Naturally aspirated four-cylinder behavior | TSX Sport Wagon | Cold-start quality, oil leaks, automatic-transmission operation, records, and inspection findings |
| Turbocharged power and stronger torque | V50 T5 | Boost delivery, smoke or unusual turbo noise, cooling-system condition, transmission behavior, and documented service |
| Clearly stated cargo planning figures | TSX Sport Wagon | Whether the seats, hatch, cargo cover, and load floor are intact on the actual car |
| Maximum flexibility for a specific load | Whichever car passes a test fit | Opening dimensions, folded-seat operation, floor length, and water-tightness |
| Published crash-test evidence in this comparison | TSX Sport Wagon | That the vehicle has not suffered structural or restraint-system damage; do not infer a V50 result from missing data |
| Lowest risk among two listings | Neither by default | Choose the example with better records, condition, inspection results, recall documentation, and a sensible price |
Verdict: which is the better used buy?
The Acura TSX Sport Wagon is the conservative recommendation for most shoppers choosing strictly between the specified U.S. examples. It combines a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, front-wheel drive, clearly separated cargo measurements, and documented IIHS results for the 2012 wagon. That does not make it maintenance-free or automatically superior.
The 2011 Volvo V50 T5 is the better match for a buyer who values the 227-horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder and its 236 lb-ft of torque enough to accept the need for closer mechanical inspection. Its greater published power is real, but it should not outweigh a weak service history, warning lights, corrosion, poor repairs, or an unfavorable price.
When two actual listings are in front of you, buy the healthier individual car. Obtain the VIN, confirm the exact configuration, inspect it independently, verify recalls, test every major system, and negotiate from documented defects. Model-level specifications can narrow the choice; they cannot replace evidence about the car you will own.
