The Acura TL was sold in the U.S. for model years 1996 through 2014. Its four-generation timeline is 1996–1998, 1999–2003, 2004–2008, and 2009–2014; Acura identifies 2014 as the TL’s final model year.
Acura TL generations by model year
| Generation | Model years | Acura’s model names | Key changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1996–1998 | 2.5TL and 3.2TL | Introduced to replace the Vigor, with a 2.5-liter inline-five or 3.2-liter V6. |
| Second | 1999–2003 | 3.2TL | 1999 redesign brought a new body, engine, and chassis; the 2.5TL was dropped. |
| Third | 2004–2008 | TL | All-new body, engine, and chassis for 2004; Type-S returned for 2007. |
| Fourth | 2009–2014 | TL | Redesigned for 2009, with the TL’s first SH-AWD application; 2014 was the final model year. |
These are model years, not necessarily the calendar years in which a vehicle was built or sold. Acura’s model chronology groups the TL’s earlier versions by their model names and years, while explicitly identifying the third- and fourth-generation launches.
What changed in each Acura TL generation?
First generation: 1996–1998
Acura says the TL replaced the Vigor and was unveiled as a 1996 model. The initial range included the 2.5TL, with a 2.5-liter inline-five listed at 176 horsepower, and the 3.2TL, with a 3.2-liter V6 listed at 200 horsepower. Acura identifies 1998 as the final model year for this version.
Second generation: 1999–2003
For 1999, Acura redesigned the 3.2TL’s body, engine, and chassis and discontinued the 2.5TL. Acura’s chronology lists the original 1999 3.2-liter V6 at 225 horsepower. A five-speed automatic replaced the four-speed for 2000.

Fourth generation: 2009–2014
The 2009 redesign introduced two VTEC powertrain choices, including a V6 rated at 305 horsepower, and the TL’s first application of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). Acura’s SH-AWD history lists the system’s TL application as 2009–2014.
For 2010, Acura listed a six-speed manual transmission as available with the SH-AWD model. The 2012 update brought new front and rear styling, revised wheels and interior, technology updates, and a six-speed automatic. Acura describes the 2014 TL as unchanged and marks it as the final model year.

When was the last Acura TL made?
Acura lists 2014 as the final TL model year. The TL is therefore a discontinued model, not a current new Acura offering. The chronology establishes model years; it does not identify the production date of an individual car.
