The 2024 BMW X5 keeps its familiar luxury-SUV shape but makes meaningful changes underneath: a larger curved display and updated controls inside, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance for its gasoline models, and a more powerful plug-in hybrid. The lineup ranges from the rear-wheel-drive sDrive40i to the V8-powered M60i, with the xDrive50e offering electric-only driving. Independent tests found quick acceleration and a refined cabin, but also noted configuration-specific ride and steering compromises.
What changed on the 2024 BMW X5?
BMW’s U.S. announcement on February 7, 2023, described a restrained exterior update: slimmer redesigned headlights, a revised kidney grille and front fascia, new air breathers, and rear lamps with an X motif. The more obvious change is inside, where a 12.3-inch instrument display and 14.9-inch control display sit together in a curved panel running BMW’s iDrive 8 system. BMW called the display “at the heart of the interior redesign” in its launch announcement; that is the manufacturer’s description, rather than an independent assessment.
BMW also announced 48-volt mild-hybrid technology for the combustion models and a substantially upgraded plug-in hybrid xDrive50e. Production was scheduled to begin in April 2023 at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant. BMW’s U.S. launch announcement contains the original specifications and launch details.
Which 2024 X5 trim should you compare?
The four launch versions differ in drive layout, powertrain, and intended use. BMW’s February 2023 U.S. release listed the following base MSRPs, each plus $995 destination and handling. These are historical launch prices, not current used-car values or present-day transaction prices.

All four use an eight-speed automatic transmission. The sDrive40i is the only rear-wheel-drive version; xDrive denotes BMW’s all-wheel-drive models. The xDrive40i is the straightforward six-cylinder choice, while the xDrive50e adds plug-in electric operation. The M60i is the high-output V8 option.
How far can the 2024 X5 xDrive50e travel on electric power?
The number depends on the source and test basis. BMW initially described the xDrive50e’s all-electric range as a preliminary estimate of up to 40 miles, based on BMW testing using the EPA test procedure. Car and Driver later reported a 38-mile EPA-estimated range and recorded 33 miles in its own 75-mph highway range test. The EPA estimate and the publication’s highway result are different measures, not interchangeable claims about what every driver will achieve.

Car and Driver’s xDrive50e test also recorded 26 mpg after the battery was depleted and 26 MPGe observed overall. Those are results from that publication’s test conditions and vehicle, not guaranteed consumption figures. Its instrumented test reached 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. BMW’s original preliminary 0–60 mph claim was 4.6 seconds.
What is the M60i like compared with the xDrive40i and xDrive50e?
The M60i trades the six-cylinder models’ lower-output approach for a 523-hp, 553-lb-ft twin-turbo V8 with mild-hybrid assistance. Car and Driver recorded a 3.6-second 0–60 mph time in its M60i test; BMW’s original preliminary figure was 4.2 seconds. The publication also measured 24 mpg on its 75-mph highway loop. These results apply to its test, not every M60i or driving situation.

Car and Driver described the M60i’s power as effortless and its cabin as comfortable, while noting twitchy steering around town and understeer at the skidpad. Its test vehicle had 22-inch wheels and summer tires, so those observations should not be treated as universal characteristics of every trim or wheel-and-tire setup. The xDrive40i shares its 375-hp inline-six with the sDrive40i but adds all-wheel drive; available Car and Driver reporting does not establish an independent instrumented acceleration comparison for either 40i model.

Car and Driver’s broader X5 review describes a refined ride, stable handling, and steering that feels connected and direct. It reports generous space for adults in both rows. In the publication’s luggage test, 11 carry-on cases fit behind the second row and 26 with the rear seats folded. Those are results of a defined luggage test, not a cargo-volume measurement.

The xDrive50e-specific review adds important nuance to the broad impression. Car and Driver called that test car quick and its cabin deluxe, but found the ride firm over sharper bumps, the brake-pedal feel short of ideal, and the steering inert. The test vehicle had optional 21-inch wheels and run-flat tires; the review notes that setup may have contributed to its response over sharp bumps. A different wheel and tire configuration may feel different.
What technology and driver assistance are available?
The curved 12.3-inch instrument display and 14.9-inch control display make the cabin’s digital update immediately visible. The xDrive50e review specifically noted that climate controls are on the screen, a detail worth considering if you prefer physical controls for frequent adjustments.

BMW announced Highway Assistant as part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package. BMW said it permits hands-off steering on limited-access highways at speeds up to 85 mph, while requiring the driver to stay focused and be ready to take over steering. It is a driver-assistance feature, not autonomous driving. Package inclusion and feature availability should be verified for the specific vehicle and market.
What to check when shopping for a used 2024 X5
Because trim, options, and wheel-and-tire fitment can change the experience, evaluate the individual vehicle rather than relying on a model-wide assumption. Ask for its build or equipment details and check the following:
