Surge says the changeover takes three minutes, but that timing has not been independently tested in the sources available. Current retail availability, final production specifications and price are also unconfirmed.
What is the Surge S32?
The S32 is designed as two vehicles that can be used together or separately:
- An electric scooter provides the front wheel and steering section when docked.
- A rear three-wheeler module supplies the passenger or cargo body and its own electric drive system.
In combined mode, the scooter’s rear wheel is lifted clear of the road and rests over the rear module. The scooter and module retain separate motors and battery packs, linked by an electronic connector and shared controls. Release the connection and the scooter can be ridden independently.
Surge calls this architecture AMSEP. Its product description lists a unified chassis connection, electromechanical locking, a ladder frame and battery thermal-safety measures. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not results from independent crash, durability or thermal testing.

How the scooter detaches from the auto
- The scooter is aligned with the rear module’s docking structure.
- A mechanical and electronic connection locks the two sections together.
- Controls and power management switch to the combined three-wheeler configuration.
- For separation, the lock is released and the scooter is driven or moved away as a two-wheeler.
Surge advertises a three-minute conversion. That is a company claim; no independent timing test was established. Real-world conversion will also depend on level ground, battery state, loading, weather, operator familiarity and whether the vehicle must be secured against theft between trips.
Passenger and cargo versions
The January 2024 unveiling report by Autocar India described several intended body styles, including passenger models and covered or open goods carriers. The report gave the following figures for the announced concept:

The current Surge product page displays “999” placeholders for speed, power and battery capacity rather than a final numerical datasheet. Consequently, these figures should not be used to calculate present-day range, payload, charging time or running cost.
What would the S32 be used for?
Personal mobility
Detached, the scooter is intended for ordinary two-wheel trips. Docked, the same vehicle could provide weather protection or passenger-carrying space, depending on the body variant.

The passenger configuration is aimed at shared and last-mile transport. The evidence describes an intended use case, not verified income, utilization or cost savings for operators.

Goods delivery
Open and covered cargo versions are intended for deliveries and local commercial work. No independent payload, range or durability results were established.
Indian regulatory context
A report hosted by Surge about proposed September 2024 amendments to India’s Central Motor Vehicles Rules described an L2-5 category for a two-wheeler combined with a non-self-propelled rear module. The reproduced draft text said the vehicle could be separated as needed, that only one configuration could be functional at a time, and that passenger and goods versions would be distinguished. It also described one registration number for the two configurations.
Those were draft provisions, not proof that the S32 has current approval or registration. Buyers and operators would need to confirm the final rules, the vehicle’s homologation, registration class, insurance, driving-licence requirements and any state-specific commercial permits.

The available evidence does not confirm current retail sales or a price. Autocar India reported in January 2024 that Surge hoped to launch during that year and described the project as nearing production readiness. A TIME feature published in October 2024 likewise discussed an expected Indian sale by the end of that year. Those were forward-looking statements made in 2024, not confirmation that the launch occurred.
Surge’s current site and media index provide promotional information but do not establish a purchase channel, final specification sheet or price. Treat any online price, booking offer or claimed delivery date as unverified unless Surge supplies a current written quotation and vehicle documentation.

What is established about development?
TIME reported that development had taken four years and that the design was associated with more than 40 patents. Those are figures reported by TIME, not an independently audited patent count or engineering test record. The same feature quoted Hero MotoCorp executive chairman Pawan Munjal: “People have been calling it the Batmobile.”
Surge also claims that its battery packs have undergone 100,000 km of testing. The product page does not state the protocol, test conditions or independent validation, so the claim cannot be translated into a guaranteed service life.

S32 versus owning a separate scooter and three-wheeler
The modular design could reduce duplication for an operator who genuinely needs both vehicle types, but the evidence is not sufficient to declare it cheaper or more practical than separate vehicles.

What to verify before committing money
- A current quotation, delivery schedule and refund terms from an identifiable seller.
- Final homologation documents, registration category and insurance requirements.
- Certified range, payload, charging time and gradeability for the exact passenger or cargo version.
- Whether the scooter and rear module can be charged separately and how replacement batteries are supplied.
- Demonstrated locking, separation and emergency procedures under realistic loads.
- Warranty coverage for both powertrains, the docking hardware and batteries.
- Local access to trained service technicians, diagnostic tools and spare modules.
Until those details are documented, the S32 is best understood as a promising modular-vehicle concept with announced specifications, not a fully verified product with a known price and ownership record.
