Lando Norris turned pole position into a McLaren win over Max Verstappen, while Isack Hadjar crashed before the start and Jack Doohan crashed early in the race.
A chaotic season opener at Albert Park
The Australian Grand Prix opened the 2025 Formula 1 season at the 5.278-kilometre Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne. Conditions changed during a race that also featured multiple crashes and retirements; the rookies’ problems were part of that wider drama, not its sole cause. Formula 1’s event guide lists the circuit and event details.
Norris started from pole and finished ahead of Verstappen to claim victory for McLaren. Oscar Piastri, Norris’s teammate, qualified second, making the front row an all-McLaren affair. The race was also notable as Lewis Hamilton’s first race weekend as a Ferrari driver. Formula 1’s race report describes the changing-weather drama and Norris’s win.
How the rookies’ opening race unfolded
Isack Hadjar: crash before the start
Hadjar qualified 11th, but his race ended before it began: he crashed on the way to the grid. His qualifying position therefore did not translate into a race start. The incident was an especially abrupt introduction to his first Grand Prix weekend as an F1 driver. Formula 1’s qualifying report records the grid positions, and its race report notes Hadjar’s crash.

Jack Doohan: early race crash
Doohan qualified 14th, then crashed early in the Grand Prix. His race was over before he could turn that grid position into a result. The incident came amid the unsettled conditions and other crashes, rather than in isolation.
Liam Lawson and Gabriel Bortoleto: crash retirements
Lawson and Bortoleto also retired after crashes. Their exits added to the difficult day for several first-year drivers, but they do not mean that every rookie retired. The Formula 1 race report covers the notable incidents; the FIA’s 2025 session classifications are the official reference for individual classifications and statuses.

Why the rookies’ stories were not all the same
Hadjar’s crash happened before the start, Doohan’s came early in the race, and Lawson and Bortoleto retired after crashes. Those are distinct outcomes. A qualifying position is not a finishing result, and a driver who crashes on the way to the grid is not in the same situation as one who starts and later retires.
That distinction matters when describing the opener as tough for rookies: it captures a rough start for several newcomers without suggesting that all of them had identical weekends or that they alone caused the race’s chaos. For exact classified positions and status codes, consult the FIA’s official 2025 session classifications.

The result that set the season in motion
For McLaren, Norris’s victory was the clearest outcome of a race in which changing conditions made the opening round unpredictable. For several rookies, the first race instead brought an immediate test of how quickly a weekend could unravel. The contrast—Norris converting pole into a win while multiple newcomers suffered crashes—defined the Australian Grand Prix’s opening chapter of the 2025 season.
