E10 is approved for conventional light-duty vehicles, while U.S. Department of Energy guidance approves E15 for conventional light-duty vehicles from model year 2001 onward, subject to vehicle-category restrictions. Check the exact vehicle’s owner’s manual and manufacturer guidance before choosing a blend.
What do E10, E15, and E85 mean?
The “E” identifies ethanol, and the number indicates a range or proportion of ethanol in the fuel. In U.S. retail use, E85 is not always 85% ethanol: its ethanol content varies with season and geography.
| Fuel label | Ethanol content | Vehicle guidance |
|---|---|---|
| E10 | 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline | Approved for conventional light-duty vehicles, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Check the manual for any vehicle-specific requirements. |
| E15 | 10.5% to 15% ethanol | DOE guidance approves E15 for conventional light-duty vehicles from model year 2001 onward, with restrictions for some vehicle categories. Check the EPA’s E15 guidance and the vehicle maker’s instructions. |
| E85 / flex fuel | 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on season and geography | Use only in a flex-fuel vehicle. DOE says E85 is not approved for gasoline-only models. |
| E25 / E30 | Intermediate ethanol blends | May be offered at blender pumps; DOE guidance identifies these blends for FFVs. Follow the pump label and the vehicle’s specifications. |
DOE’s December 2021 consumer factsheet reported that more than 98% of U.S. gasoline contained up to 10% ethanol. That is a dated figure, not a current station-by-station or 2026 estimate. See the DOE Energy Saver ethanol factsheet for its context.
What is a flex-fuel vehicle?
An FFV is factory-built to operate on gasoline or gasoline-ethanol blends containing up to 83% ethanol. It is not simply a gasoline car that has been given a different fuel or additive: flex-fuel capability is part of the vehicle’s design. The vehicle’s fuel-system components and engine controls are made to accommodate ethanol blends.

FFVs can otherwise be similar to gasoline-only versions of the same vehicle. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC), citing Experian, reported more than 20.9 million FFVs in the United States as of 2022; this is a dated fleet estimate, not a current count. See the AFDC overview of flexible-fuel vehicles.
Can my car use E85 or E15?
E85
Use E85 only if the exact vehicle is an FFV. DOE explicitly states that E85 is not approved for gasoline-only models. A car’s age, engine size, or ability to run on E10 does not establish E85 compatibility.
E15
DOE guidance says E15 is approved for conventional light-duty vehicles of model year 2001 and newer, but restrictions apply to some vehicle categories. The model-year rule is a general U.S. guideline, not a substitute for the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s instructions for a particular car. If those sources do not clearly permit E15, confirm with the vehicle maker before filling up.

- Test your fuel for proper ethanol levels to ensure it does not damage your engine. Test kit also tests for e85.
- Simple test to discover the percentage of ethanol alcohol in gasoline. With readings of e10, e15, e20, e25, e80, e85 and e90
- High levels of ethanol could damage your fuel system and lower your fuel mileage.
- Ethanol can damage motors not equipped or designed to use it, test your gasoline first.
- Easy to read label and instructions that is laminated to prevent fading or the ink rubbing off. Testing bottle can be reused over and over.
E10 and other blends
DOE says E10 is approved for conventional light-duty vehicles. Higher intermediate blends such as E25 or E30 are intended for FFVs, not as a step-up option for every gasoline car. When in doubt, use only a blend the vehicle’s manual and fuel-door information allow.

Appearance alone is not proof. Some FFVs look much like gasoline-only versions of the same model. A flex-fuel emblem or yellow fuel cap can be a useful clue, but either should be confirmed against vehicle-specific records.
- Check the owner’s manual and fuel-door label. Look for explicit approval of E85 or a statement that the vehicle is a flexible-fuel vehicle.
- Verify the exact vehicle with the manufacturer. Use VIN-specific manufacturer information or contact the maker or dealer with the VIN and model year.
- Cross-check an official model-year listing. DOE directs drivers to Fueleconomy.gov’s FFV identification information and the AFDC Alternative Fuel and Advanced Vehicle Search.
Do not rely on a badge, cap color, or a listing for a different model year or trim when deciding whether to use E85.

How do flex-fuel engines accommodate ethanol?
FFVs generally use one fuel system for their approved gasoline and ethanol blends. Many parts are similar to those in conventional gasoline vehicles, but ethanol-compatible components and engine-control calibration are needed. DOE describes changes to parts such as the fuel pump and fuel injection system, along with an engine control module calibrated for ethanol’s higher oxygen content.
That hardware and calibration are why a gasoline-only vehicle should not be assumed to handle E85. Adding a fuel additive does not make a car flex-fuel compatible.
Does E85 get worse gas mileage?
Usually, miles per gallon decrease as ethanol content rises because ethanol contains less energy per gallon than gasoline. DOE’s AFDC says E85 at 83% ethanol has about 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline; the difference is smaller at lower ethanol concentrations. Actual fuel economy depends on the blend and the specific vehicle.

- WARNINGS: This Ethanol Content Tester is intended for testing only, do not store gasoline in this bottle. Keep away from heat and open flame, flammable when in use.
Some FFVs may have improved acceleration on higher-ethanol blends, according to DOE. That does not mean every FFV will feel faster, and it does not erase the possibility of lower miles per gallon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is E85 cheaper to use?
A lower pump price does not by itself tell you whether E85 costs less per mile. Compare the E85 and gasoline prices available locally with the fuel-economy figures for your exact vehicle on each blend. Also account for whether E85 is available along your usual routes and that its ethanol content can vary by season and location.
- Confirm the vehicle is approved for the blend.
- Compare the local prices for E85 and gasoline.
- Use model-specific fuel-economy information for both fuels rather than assuming the mileage difference.
- Consider the route and convenience of available E85 stations.
- Remember that E85’s exact ethanol content varies with geography and season.
Without current local prices and model-specific mileage, there is no reliable universal claim that E85 will save—or cost—you money.

Can I convert a gasoline car to flex fuel?
Conversions are unusual. DOE’s AFDC says only a few conversion kits for conventional gasoline systems to FFV systems are EPA-certified. That does not establish that a particular car is eligible, and an additive or generic ethanol sensor is not enough to make a gasoline-only vehicle safe for E85.
Anyone considering a conversion needs to verify whether an EPA-certified system covers the exact vehicle and application. Do not treat conversion as a routine do-it-yourself modification.
