A 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail identified as chassis 19R was reported for sale in March 2020, with a Lanzante road conversion. That is a dated sale report, not confirmation that the car is available now: as of October 4, 2026, its current ownership, sale status, asking price and registration are unverified.
What the 2020 sale report establishes
The car was identified as chassis 19R in a PistonHeads forum post reproducing the 2020 story. The post reports that Lanzante converted it for road use. Because the identification and sale detail reach readers through that forum post rather than a primary dealer listing, they should be treated as reported information, not an independently verified current listing. “Road-legal” describes the reported conversion of this individual car. The available account does not establish whether it is registered for road use now, or whether other F1 GTR Longtails can be driven on public roads.
Why the Longtail was built
The F1 GTR Longtail was developed for the 1997 GT1 racing environment, as McLaren faced competition from purpose-built rivals including Porsche and Mercedes. Its extended front and rear bodywork was intended to produce more downforce, while the broader development also pursued weight reduction. WhichCar reports a 910 kg result for that effort; this is not a verified, chassis-specific measurement for 19R. WhichCar’s Longtail history.

- TOP QUALITY MATERIALS: Constructed with a diecast metal body and plastic components, this model provides structural balance while allowing fine detailing across exterior features. The paint and livery application are evenly applied to reflect the intended racing finish, while smaller components contribute to the overall appearance, supporting a clean, consistent, and visually refined presentation suitable for shelves and display environments.
- COLLECTIBLE DISPLAY ITEM: This McLaren F1 GTR Short Tail model is intended for collectors aged 14 and above and is designed for display purposes. With its racing heritage and detailed finish, it fits well within collections focused on motorsport history, particularly for enthusiasts of endurance racing vehicles and 1990s GT competition design.
That racing purpose matters when comparing it with the road-going McLaren F1. The GTR Longtail was a competition variant shaped by GT1 demands, not a factory road F1 with a body-kit upgrade. A road conversion can make a particular race car usable on public roads under applicable requirements, but it does not make that car identical to the original road model.
Keep the three Longtails distinct
| Car | What the cited report says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 19R | The 2020 story, relayed through a PistonHeads thread, identified it as the first F1 GTR Longtail and reported a Lanzante road conversion and an offer for sale. PistonHeads thread | Current availability, asking price, ownership or present registration. |
| 27R | Road & Track reported in 2018 that it was one of ten Longtails, had been made street-legal by Lanzante, and was listed by Tom Hartley Jnr without an asking price in that report. Road & Track’s 27R sale report | A current price or a confirmed sale. Any value estimate in the article was the writers’ speculation, not a disclosed asking price or transaction. |
| “Squiggles” | Supercars.net described it as the first Longtail to receive road legalization, with Gordon Murray overseeing the work, and noted a conversion book, race parts and records. Is 19R still for sale, and what is the price?
The supported claim is that 19R was offered for sale in the 2020 coverage. No current listing, asking price or confirmed sale result is established as of October 4, 2026. The undisclosed asking price in Road & Track’s 2018 report referred to 27R, a different chassis; it is not a price for 19R.
