Its early story includes a huge launch, a first-year sales figure that differs across Ford sources, the familiar “1964½” nickname and a run of seven generations counted by Ford in 2024.
When did the Ford Mustang debut?
Ford’s press debut took place on April 14, 1964; the public unveiling followed on April 17 at the New York World’s Fair. Ford’s milestone timeline calls the car the 1965 Mustang, even though it went on sale in April 1964. Ford’s account of the World’s Fair debut and its 50th-anniversary milestone timeline document the dates.
Why do people call some early Mustangs “1964½”?
“1964½” is a commonly used label for Mustangs built and sold in the months before the 1965 model year. The timing explains the nickname: Ford says the Mustang went on sale April 17, 1964, while its timeline identifies it as a 1965 model. Ford’s timeline also records the hardtop and convertible at launch, with the fastback joining in June 1964. The sources cited here do not establish “1964½” as an official Ford model designation, so it is best understood as a popular way to distinguish early cars.
How many Mustangs did Ford sell in the first year?
Ford has published two different first-year figures. Its World’s Fair history article reports more than 418,000 sales in the first year, while its milestone timeline lists 417,000 sales in the first 12 months. Those are Ford’s separate historical accounts, not a single reconciled total. The timeline also records 22,000 orders on the first day.

What did the original Mustang cost and include?
Ford’s milestone timeline lists the launch price as $2,368 and describes standard launch equipment as a 170-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine and a three-speed floor-shift transmission. These are launch-era figures and specifications; they should not be read as current-dollar pricing or as equipment common to every later Mustang.
Why did Ford develop the Mustang?
Ford dates the Mustang development effort to 1961 and describes the opportunity as reaching younger consumers and households adding a second car. In a 2021 history article, Ford supplied period context: it said people with some college education made 46% of new-car purchases in 1962 while representing 18% of the population, and that U.S. households with two or more cars grew from 1 million in 1959 to 13 million in 1963. These are figures in Ford’s historical account, not independently validated estimates here. Ford’s account of the Mustang’s creation describes the development and market context.
