Cuore Aperto (“Open Heart”) is a custom coffee table built around a genuine Ferrari flat-12 from a 512 TR. The engine became furniture after a crack in its crankcase reportedly caused a coolant leak and led Ferrari to replace it under warranty. Its parts are displayed beneath glass, but the engine should be understood as a display object—not as repaired or running hardware.

What is Cuore Aperto?

Cuore Aperto is an engine-furniture piece described by Silodrome in an October 3, 2026 feature. The article identifies the donor as a later Testarossa-family 512 TR engine and the seller as Ben’s Automotive Decor, based in Atascadero, California. It describes the table as offered at no reserve, but does not establish the sale result, final price, or whether the table is currently available.

The engine’s crankcases, cylinder heads, and intake manifolds are refinished and arranged in an exploded-view display under a glass top. The article describes a tri-tone chrome-effect powder coat and Ferrari-style red crinkle finish. The intake manifolds support the glass, while adjustable feet sit below the engine assembly. A Ferrari warranty tag is shown in an acrylic frame.

Why does the engine have a cracked crankcase?

According to the Silodrome feature, the 512 TR engine was replaced under warranty after a crack in its crankcase caused coolant to leak. The article says the crack is internal and not visible from the outside. That is the reported history of this particular engine, not an independent inspection finding.

The defect is also central to the table’s story: this was not described as a healthy engine removed for decoration. Nothing in the account establishes that it was repaired or is safe to run, so it is best treated as a non-operational display assembly.

Is a Testarossa engine a boxer engine?

Although the opposing cylinder banks make the engine look like a boxer, Ferrari describes this layout as a 180-degree V12. In a boxer engine, opposing connecting rods have separate crankpins; in this Ferrari arrangement, each opposing pair shares a crankpin. The feature attributes the admonition “Please, don’t call it boxer” to Ferrari engine designer Mauro Forghieri.

“Flat-12” remains a useful description of the engine’s shape, but the shared-crankpin detail explains why the more precise architectural term is 180-degree V12.

How the Testarossa flat-12 developed

The Silodrome feature traces Ferrari’s road-car flat-12 lineage to the 3.0-liter 312 B Formula 1 engine for the 1970 season, then to the 365 GT4 BB, shown in 1971 and built from 1973. It describes the original Testarossa as using a 4.9-liter, four-valve-per-cylinder, dry-sump engine, with later revisions for the 512 TR and F512 M. The historical and specification details below are those reported in that feature.

Variant Reported dates and changes Reported output
512 TR Built from 1991 to 1994; compression ratio raised to 10.0:1; Bosch Motronic M2.7 engine management. 422 bhp at 6,750 rpm; 362 lb-ft at 5,500 rpm.
F512 M Later update with a lightened crankshaft and titanium connecting rods; production ended in 1996. 434 bhp at 6,750 rpm; 369 lb-ft at 5,500 rpm.

Silodrome reports that 501 F512 Ms were built and that 9,939 cars were produced across all three variants. Those are figures attributed to the feature, not independently confirmed factory totals.

Is the table for sale now?

The article’s no-reserve description does not establish what happened at auction or whether the piece can still be bought. No current availability or sale price is confirmed here. The seller’s identification in the feature is useful context, but it should not be read as evidence of present inventory.
