The 2022 Toyota Tacozilla was not a production camper. It was a one-off Tacoma TRD Sport prototype unveiled at the 2021 SEMA Show, built by Toyota Motorsports Garage as a modern, overlanding-ready interpretation of Toyota’s 1970s and 1980s campers. It combined a custom aluminum living module with a kitchen, bathroom, hot-water shower, sleeping area, and off-road hardware.
What was the 2022 Toyota Tacozilla?
The Toyota Tacozilla was a one-off Toyota-built Tacoma camper prototype—not a production motorhome, dealer accessory, or camper that customers could order for a stated MSRP.

Toyota unveiled it at the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas on November 2, 2021. The “2022” part of the name refers to the Tacoma model-year context and Toyota’s promotional connection to the new 2022 Tacoma; it does not mean Toyota sold a 2022 Tacozilla to the public. Toyota described the project as a custom, overlanding-ready “micro-house” built by Marty Schwerter and the Toyota Motorsports Garage team around a Tacoma TRD Sport.

Why Toyota built it
Tacozilla was intended to reinterpret Toyota’s earlier compact campers for modern overlanding. Toyota’s references to 1970s and 1980s campers, together with SEMA’s description of the project as a homage to old-school Chinook conversions, give the truck a clear historical identity.
It is more accurate to call Tacozilla a tribute than a factory revival. The available information does not establish that it was a direct technical continuation of the original Chinook campers or that it shared a production lineage with them. Instead, Toyota used the visual idea of a compact pickup camper as a starting point and rebuilt it around contemporary Tacoma hardware and a much more elaborate interior.
A custom camper body rather than a removable shell
The most important engineering distinction is that Tacozilla was not simply a conventional camper placed in the Tacoma bed. Toyota removed the Tacoma’s bed and fabricated a custom camper structure that was integrated into the heavily modified prototype.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The team worked below frame height to create enough interior room for an occupant to stand. A custom frame was fabricated and reinforced, then covered with smooth aluminum. The upper and lower sections of the body taper inward, giving the camper a rounded, streamlined profile instead of the square “refrigerator on the back of a truck” appearance Toyota wanted to avoid.
That shape was functional as well as stylistic. Toyota said the narrower sections were intended to make it easier to navigate trails bordered by trees and other obstacles. The shape also complicated construction, particularly at the rear. The team reportedly spent more than 100 hours designing the rear door.
The cab-to-camper pass-through
Tacozilla included an opening between the Tacoma cab and the living area. Creating that pass-through was one of the project’s significant structural challenges. The support and bracing had to accommodate the way the cab and camper could twist relative to one another when the truck crossed uneven ground.
That detail matters when comparing the prototype with a typical slide-in camper. A removable camper can be designed as a separate module that sits in the bed. Tacozilla’s pass-through and integrated structure required Toyota’s team to consider the interaction between the truck and the camper body during off-road use. The public descriptions do not provide a complete structural drawing, certification report, or production engineering specification, so the prototype should not be treated as a blueprint for a home conversion.
Exterior construction and packaging
The camper used rounded, smooth aluminum panels and a tapered profile. Complete Customs, a Toyota partner based in McKinney, Texas, assisted with customization and handled the paint work. The finished color scheme used a white base with yellow, orange, and bronze accents designed to recall vintage Toyota campers.
Toyota also made several practical packaging choices:
Rank #2
- Fitment: The truck bed soft topper fits the 2016-2023 Tacoma with the 6ft bed. Constructed with steel bases, aluminum alloy support poles, water-resistant and tear-resistant Oxford fabric, and high-clarity PVC films
- Flexible & Foldable: The roll-up rear and side windows provide excellent ventilation when passengers or pets are in the truck bed. When not in use, the Tacoma bed cap folds down easily for compact storage, which makes it more versatile than hardcovers
- Wind & Vibration Resistant Dual Tail Buckle: Reinforced dual tail buckle with upgraded shock absorbing structure. Secures tightly on rough roads, effectively blocking dust and moisture to protect stored cargo
- Superior Protection & Versatility: Our soft camper shell provides security for your cargo and can hide your items to prevent casual theft. It is suitable for camping, work, and sports events, from work to play, we've got you covered
- Anti-Pooling Design: Stay dry with our advanced anti-pooling design. A strategically placed top support pole on the roof prevents water accumulation during rainfall
- Separated fuel filler: The filler was positioned to help keep fuel fumes isolated from the living area.
- Second battery: A second battery was installed in the engine bay to support auxiliary electrical demands without taking up valuable interior space.
- Pop-up skylight: A large Lexan skylight was added after the aluminum skinning process had begun. It supplied natural light, ventilation, and additional headroom.
- Reused rear fender flares: The Tacoma’s original rear fender flares were reused around the camper’s wheel openings, helping visually connect the custom body to the pickup.
These features show that the project was not just a cosmetic show truck. At the same time, they do not establish that Toyota developed a tested production camper system for sale.
Engine, suspension, and tires
SEMA identified the underlying truck’s engine as the stock 3.5-liter V6. In a standard 2022 Tacoma V6 application, that engine was rated at 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque and could be paired with a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual depending on configuration. The public Tacozilla descriptions do not establish which transmission the completed show vehicle used, nor do they provide complete information about its gearing, axles, or final drive.
Toyota stated that the build added approximately two inches of clearance to the standard Tacoma TRD Sport suspension. SEMA described the setup as a two-inch TRD suspension lift with billet control arms. The truck wore 285/70R17 General Grabber X3 all-terrain tires; General Tire’s size information confirms that the Grabber X3 was offered in LT285/70R17.
That documented tire size is useful for understanding the prototype, but it is not a universal fitment recommendation. Anyone considering 285/70R17 off-road tires on a Tacoma must verify wheel width, suspension and fender clearance, steering lock, tire load rating, speed rating, gearing implications, and local requirements. The exact tire version and current availability also matter.
Inside the Tacozilla
Toyota presented the interior as a compact, insulated off-grid living space rather than an empty sleeping shell. The documented equipment included:
- A full bathroom.
- A hot-water shower.
- A functional kitchen with a stove and sink.
- A refrigerator, according to SEMA’s description.
- Sleeping space.
- Teak sauna-style or teak-style flooring.
- A large pop-up Lexan skylight.
- A 3D-printed dining table.
The dining table had an especially show-oriented feature: it could convert into a backlit wall-art display. That combination of useful furniture and visual presentation captures the purpose of Tacozilla. It was an engineering and design demonstration meant to make a small camper feel like a finished micro-home, not merely a truck with a mattress in the back.

Was the Tacozilla available to buy?
No production or retail Tacozilla was announced in the official material reviewed for this article. There is no documented Toyota MSRP, consumer order process, factory camper accessory package, production volume, completed-vehicle curb weight, payload rating, gross vehicle weight rating, certified towing capacity, or consumer warranty for the camper conversion.
That means online price estimates should be treated as speculation, not Toyota pricing. The project’s one-off fabrication, structural modifications, appliances, interior finishing, paint, and electrical work would make it fundamentally different from buying a regular Tacoma and adding a catalog camper shell.

For most buyers, the practical route is not finding the actual prototype. It is deciding which part of the Tacozilla idea matters most: a hard-sided sleeping area, removable camping shelter, off-grid power, or a complete kitchen and bathroom.
1. Tacoma-compatible camper shell or wedge camper
A Toyota Tacoma camper shell or wedge camper is the closest broad retail category to Tacozilla’s living-module concept. It can provide weather protection, storage, and in some designs a sleeping platform or pop-up roof.
It will not reproduce Tacozilla’s integrated body, cab-to-camper pass-through, bathroom, hot-water plumbing, or custom interior. Fitment must be checked against the Tacoma’s cab style, bed length, model year, mounting system, roof height, payload, and the shell’s own weight. In particular, do not assume that a product listed for “Tacoma” fits every 2022 configuration.
2. Removable truck-bed tent
A Toyota Tacoma truck-bed tent is a simpler and generally more removable approach. It can create a dry sleeping area without permanently changing the truck and is materially different from Tacozilla’s insulated, hard-sided camper body. It does not provide a bathroom, integrated kitchen, standing room, or the same level of weather and thermal protection.
3. Overlanding equipment
Owners who already have a shell, wedge camper, or tent can assemble the individual capabilities separately:
- A portable power station or properly engineered dual-battery system.
- A 12V refrigerator or cooler.
- A portable stove and compact camp kitchen.
- Water storage and a portable shower.
- Recovery equipment appropriate to the truck’s weight and use.
- All-terrain tires with verified load ratings and clearance.
Toyota documented a custom dual-battery arrangement on Tacozilla, but it did not identify the components or electrical architecture. A portable power station for overlanding can be a modern alternative, but it should not be described as the original equipment. Similarly, a 12V camping refrigerator, portable stove, or shower can replicate individual functions of the prototype without claiming to be a Tacozilla component.

Tacozilla’s appearance can make the project look like a straightforward camper-body exercise. It is not. A comparable conversion would require careful attention to:
- Payload and gross vehicle weight: The completed prototype’s certified figures were not published in the reviewed sources. A builder must weigh the truck, body, passengers, water, fuel, food, tools, and recovery equipment.
- Load distribution: Heavy batteries, water tanks, appliances, and cabinetry can alter axle loads and handling.
- Structure: A cab-to-camper pass-through and an integrated body require professional structural design, not just cut sheet metal.
- Suspension and tires: Lift components and larger tires must be compatible with the Tacoma’s suspension, steering, wheels, brakes, and fenders.
- Fuel and ventilation: Fuel-system routing must prevent fumes from entering the living space. Cooking appliances and heaters also require appropriate ventilation and carbon-monoxide protection.
- Electrical safety: Auxiliary batteries, inverters, solar equipment, and shore-power connections need correctly sized conductors, overcurrent protection, grounding, isolation, and weather-resistant installation.
- Water and sanitation: A shower and bathroom require fresh-water, gray-water, and potentially black-water planning, along with freeze protection and sanitary access.
- Legal compliance: Local rules may govern vehicle modifications, lighting, body dimensions, registration classification, camper construction, fuel systems, and occupant restraints.
Toyota explicitly warned that Tacozilla was a special prototype modified with non-genuine parts and accessories. Such modifications can affect legality, safety, performance, and warranty coverage. Before attempting a similar conversion, consult the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications, component manufacturers, a qualified fabricator, and the relevant local vehicle or RV authorities.

What remains unknown
The public information is detailed enough to explain the concept but not to reconstruct a complete technical specification. The following details have not been established by the reviewed official sources:
- Exact transmission and axle specifications for the show vehicle.
- Final camper-body dimensions.
- Completed-vehicle curb weight and payload.
- Gross vehicle weight rating and certified towing capacity after conversion.
- Appliance, battery, inverter, water-system, and HVAC brands or capacities.
- Retail price, production volume, order process, and camper-conversion warranty.
- Whether the prototype was later sold or where it is currently displayed.
The verdict
The 2022 Toyota Tacozilla is best understood as a Toyota-built design and engineering showcase: a custom Tacoma TRD Sport transformed into a compact, Chinook-inspired overlanding micro-house. Its rounded aluminum body, reinforced structure, pass-through, dual-battery arrangement, lifted suspension, large all-terrain tires, and unusually complete interior made it far more ambitious than a normal camper-shell installation.
But it was not a production 2022 Toyota model. Buyers looking for the same general experience should start with a Tacoma-compatible shell, wedge camper, or removable bed tent, then add power, refrigeration, cooking, water, and recovery equipment according to their actual needs and the truck’s legal weight limits.
