Great Wall Motor (GWM), a Chinese automaker, showed a self-developed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 at CES 2026. It is an unexpected new engine program, but available reporting does not establish that it is literally the world’s newest twin-turbo V8. The engine’s final output, first production vehicle and launch timing also remain unsettled.
What GWM showed at CES
CarNewsChina reported that GWM presented the engine in Las Vegas on January 6, 2026; Autoblog also covered the unveiling. Both describe a 4.0-liter V8 with two turbochargers. The reports identify it as a GWM-developed engine, rather than a supplier unit merely fitted to a GWM vehicle. Neither source provides a manufacturer technical data sheet confirming the full specification.
How the reported engine is configured
The technical details published by CarNewsChina and Autoblog point to an engine designed around both boosted operation and potential hybrid integration:
- Miller-cycle operation: The reports say the engine uses a Miller cycle, a combustion-cycle approach that can be used to improve efficiency. They do not provide enough information to quantify an efficiency benefit for this engine.
- Twin turbochargers and water-cooled intercooling: The turbochargers feed a front-mounted, water-cooled intercooler. CarNewsChina also describes interconnected post-boost piping.
- Dual injection: The reported system combines 350-bar direct injection with 5.5-bar port injection. These are published technical figures, not specifications independently verified against a GWM data sheet.
- Variable-displacement oil pump: CarNewsChina lists this among the engine’s reported features.
- Nine-speed automatic and hybrid provision: Autoblog reports a GWM-developed nine-speed automatic and an architecture that provides space for an electric motor between the engine and transmission. That points to hybrid-ready packaging; it does not confirm a production hybrid powertrain.
Power: around 500 hp is an estimate, not a final rating
CarNewsChina and Autoblog cite an estimate of around 500 horsepower associated with an earlier appearance at the Shanghai Auto Show. GWM’s final production output has not been disclosed in the reporting available here. Treat 500 hp as an early estimate, not a confirmed specification for a production engine or vehicle.

Which vehicle could get the V8?
Reports describe the engine as intended for a flagship SUV, with the Tank 800 mentioned as a possible first production application in CES coverage. A later Autoblog report says GWM confirmed a production debut in a flagship SUV, but the sources do not settle the exact model or timing. The Tank 800 is therefore a plausible candidate, not a confirmed first recipient based on these reports.
Where GWM may sell it
Autoblog’s June 26, 2026 report names Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East as target regions and says the engine will not come to the U.S. market. That is reported market intent, not a definitive official market list or confirmation of specific vehicle availability in each region. Buyers will need vehicle- and country-specific launch information before treating the V8 as an option they can order.

Why the “world’s newest” claim needs qualification
The CES unveiling makes GWM’s V8 a notable new engine from an automaker many readers may not associate with a large-displacement twin-turbo V8. But the available reports do not compare its reveal date with every other engine program worldwide, so they do not verify the global superlative in the headline. What they do support is the narrower claim: GWM showed a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, with reported hybrid-ready packaging and a potential flagship-SUV role.
