The car behind this claim is the Dodge Viper SRT-10, whose V10 grew to a reported 8.4 liters for the 2008 model year. That is the Viper’s documented displacement in the available vehicle coverage—but the evidence here does not establish that it was definitively the largest engine ever fitted to an American sports car.
Which car does the headline mean?
It means the Dodge Viper SRT-10. AutoUnlim’s 2025 account identifies an 8.4-liter V10 in the 2008-model-year Viper, up from the earlier 8.3-liter engine. The article also reports 600 hp and a six-speed manual for the version it describes. Those figures are secondary-source specifications, not independently verified factory data, and should not be assumed to describe every Viper trim or market.
At 8.4 liters, the Viper’s V10 is an unusually large engine for a sports car. The displacement figure answers what the headline is pointing to; it does not by itself prove an all-time record across every vehicle that might be classified as an American sports car.
How did the Viper reach 8.4 liters?
The reported progression is from 8.3 liters to 8.4 liters for the 2008 model year. AutoUnLim links that larger engine to the Viper SRT-10 and reports 600 hp and a six-speed manual for the described version. The source does not provide a full, trim-by-trim or market-by-market comparison, so those specifications are best treated as applying to the version it covers.

Is the Viper’s engine an established all-time record?
Not on the evidence available here. The sources support the claim that the 2008-model-year Viper SRT-10 was reported with an 8.4-liter V10, but they do not provide an authoritative comparison of eligible American sports cars across all years. A defensible record claim would need clear rules for what counts: production cars or also concepts and race cars, sports cars or muscle cars, and factory engines or modified ones.
For that reason, “biggest engine ever to power an American sports car” is a commonly repeated superlative, not a record independently established by these sources. The narrower, supportable statement is that the Viper SRT-10 had a reported 8.4-liter V10 in 2008.

Why the Ram SRT-10 does not settle the sports-car question
The Viper’s engine family also appeared in the Dodge Ram SRT-10, but that vehicle was a pickup, not a sports car. The Viper Store’s reference page describes the Ram SRT-10 as using a Viper-derived 8.3-liter V10. Its existence shows why vehicle category matters when comparing engine sizes; it does not make the truck a sports-car record holder.
