There is no clear evidence that a large GM SUV was the most reliable vehicle on the market in 2024. The answer changes with the model year and rating method: J.D. Power recognized the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe in its 2024 dependability study, while its separate 2024 model-year ratings put the Tahoe and GMC Yukon at 82 and the Chevrolet Suburban at 81. Consumer Reports, by contrast, says the 2024 Tahoe and Yukon are less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.
What did the 2024 J.D. Power dependability award measure?
J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed more than 80,000 verified owners of three-year-old vehicles. Its Large SUV segment recognition went to the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The study year is 2024; the vehicles being evaluated were model-year 2021. That award is evidence about how those older Tahoes performed for owners, not a finding that a new 2024 Tahoe was the most dependable SUV on the market.
How do the 2024 model-year GM SUVs compare on J.D. Power?
J.D. Power’s 2024 model-year large-SUV ratings display the following scores:
| Model | J.D. Power rating shown for 2024 |
|---|---|
| Chevrolet Tahoe | 82 |
| GMC Yukon | 82 |
| Chevrolet Suburban | 81 |
These are page ratings, not universal engineering measures of reliability. J.D. Power describes its ratings as based on VIN-verified owner feedback. It also notes that ratings are updated each September and that a current model year’s score can carry over from the previous model year until updated survey data is available. See its pages for the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2024 GMC Yukon, and 2024 Chevrolet Suburban for the listed ratings and details.

Why does Consumer Reports give a different reliability picture?
Consumer Reports says the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2024 GMC Yukon are less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. Its reliability estimates draw on subscriber survey responses covering 20 potential trouble spots. Consumer Reports says its survey covers about 380,000 vehicles; that figure describes the broader survey, not the number of Tahoe or Yukon owners.
The findings are not directly interchangeable. J.D. Power’s dependability award is based on owners of three-year-old vehicles, its model-year ratings use a different owner-feedback framework, and Consumer Reports compares predicted reliability with other vehicles from the same model year using its subscriber survey. None of these results alone settles which large SUV is most reliable across the entire market.

Which GM SUV should a buyer consider?
The Tahoe and Yukon are related, shorter-wheelbase full-size SUVs; the Suburban is Chevrolet’s extended-length version. The available ratings do not establish that one configuration, engine, trim, or transmission is more durable than another. Use the scores as one input, alongside the specific vehicle’s history and condition, rather than as a guarantee about an individual SUV.
For a used or new-to-you vehicle, check open recalls by VIN before purchase. Consumer Reports’ 2024 Suburban reliability page refers to recalls affecting certain GM large SUVs, but applicability depends on the vehicle. A general model reliability rating cannot confirm whether a particular SUV is affected or whether recall work has been completed.

Bottom line on 2024 large GM SUV reliability
The most defensible answer is that the 2024 results are mixed, not that one of these SUVs was proven the market’s most reliable. J.D. Power’s 2024 study recognition applies to the 2021 Tahoe; its displayed 2024 model-year ratings tie Tahoe and Yukon, with Suburban one point lower. Consumer Reports’ 2024 assessment is less favorable for Tahoe and Yukon relative to same-year vehicles. Buyers should keep each rating tied to its source and cohort, then verify recall status and condition for the individual SUV.
