The Mercedes-Benz SL began as a racing car in 1952 and became one of the marque’s defining sports-car lines. Its history runs from the 300 SL gullwing and open roadster through the Pagoda, the long-lived R 107, the technology-focused R 129, the folding-hardtop R 230 and newer lightweight and AMG-era cars. The generation code is the quickest way to tell which version—and which chapter of that history—you mean.

What does “SL” mean on a Mercedes?

Mercedes-Benz says the letters stand for “Super-Leicht,” or “Super-Light”: the S stands for “Super” and the L for “Leicht.” The name first belonged to the W 194 racing sports car, not to a single road-car model or trim. Over the decades, the SL became a continuing sports-car lineage, even as its emphasis shifted among racing-inspired performance, open-air touring, safety technology and comfort.

How did the SL begin?

1952: W 194 racing 300 SL

The SL story starts with the W 194, a competition car that Mercedes-Benz says won four of the five races it entered in its first and only racing season. That success gave the name its motorsport foundation before the first road-going SLs appeared.

1954–1963: W 198 300 SL

The 300 SL gullwing coupe launched in 1954, bringing the racing name to the road. Mercedes-Benz’s archive records W 198 production from 1954 to 1963. An open 300 SL Roadster followed in 1957, giving buyers a different way to enjoy the same prestigious model line.

1954 launch, 1955–1963 production: W 121 190 SL

Mercedes-Benz launched the 190 SL alongside the 300 SL in 1954 as a more accessible open sports car. Its W 121 production period ran from 1955 to 1963. The two cars helped establish the early SL range, but they were distinct models rather than two versions of one car.

How did the SL change from the Pagoda to the R 107?

1963–1971: W 113 “Pagoda”

The W 113 succeeded the first production SLs in 1963. Its concave hardtop profile earned it the enduring nickname “Pagoda.” The roof shape is its most recognizable visual signature, and the generation marks the next major step in the SL’s evolution as a road car.

1971–1989: R 107

The R 107 arrived in 1971 and remained in production for 18 years. Mercedes-Benz described it in 2016 as the longest-running SL series to that point and said it had produced the highest volume of any SL series at the time. That unusually long run helps explain why the R 107 is so often treated as the classic Mercedes SL: it was a familiar, enduring expression of the line, not a separate official model category called “Classic.”

Which SL generations brought the biggest technology changes?

1989–2001: R 129

The R 129, introduced in 1989, made safety and technology central to the SL story. Mercedes-Benz highlights its sensor-controlled rollover bar and integral seats as defining features. It is the generation to remember when comparing the SL’s shift toward more integrated safety engineering.

2001–2012: R 230

The R 230 introduced the folding Vario hardtop, a pivotal change in the SL’s roof design. Unlike a conventional soft-top, the folding hardtop could transform the car between open and enclosed configurations. Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 material reports 20 percent greater torsional rigidity for the R 230 than for the R 129; that comparison is specific to those two generations.

What are the modern Mercedes SL generations?

2012–2020: R 231

The R 231 followed the R 230 in 2012. Mercedes-Benz describes its approach as “consistently applied lightweight design,” combining reduced weight with performance, comfort and efficiency. It continued the modern SL’s dual role as a performance car and a long-distance road car.

2020s: R 232 Mercedes-AMG SL

The R 232 is the Mercedes-AMG generation of the 2020s and carries the SL tradition into a more explicitly performance-oriented era. The available historical material identifies it as the modern continuation of the line; it does not establish one definitive production end date for the generation.

How do the 300 SL, Pagoda, R 107, R 129, R 230, R 231 and R 232 differ?

The most useful distinction is what each generation changed. The 300 SL established the road-going name with a gullwing coupe and later a roadster. The Pagoda is identified by its concave hardtop profile. The R 107 stands out for longevity and its place as a widely recognized classic. The R 129 foregrounded safety technology, while the R 230 changed the roof concept with a folding hardtop. The R 231 emphasized lightweight design; the R 232 is the AMG-era continuation.

These are not interchangeable labels for one car. They identify different series, production periods and engineering approaches. For a parts search, manual, valuation or authenticity check, start with the exact series code and then confirm the model year and specification: “Mercedes SL” alone is too broad to establish compatibility or identity.

Why does the SL’s history matter to buyers and enthusiasts?

The SL is best understood as a lineage rather than a single fixed formula. Its core idea—an open or open-capable Mercedes sports car with a performance pedigree—persisted while the execution changed substantially. That is why comparisons should name the generation and the criterion: historical importance, roof design, safety technology, weight-conscious engineering or long-distance usability. A claim that one generation is simply “the best” depends on which of those qualities matters to the reader.
