There are eight hybrids and hybrid prototypes worth watching in the 2027-model-year pipeline, but they are not eight confirmed all-new launches. The clearest upcoming named model is the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid; Honda has announced a next-generation hybrid rollout and shown two prototypes; and Toyota’s 2027 lineup includes several continuing or refreshed models. The list spans conventional hybrids, a plug-in hybrid, Nissan’s series-hybrid system and Toyota’s performance-oriented Hybrid MAX.
For shoppers comparing hybrids with battery-electric vehicles (EVs), the key question is not which one has the biggest mpg figure. It is whether a vehicle’s size, powertrain, charging needs and availability fit your daily use. Figures below are manufacturer claims or estimates unless explicitly identified as EPA estimates; they are not independent comparative test results.
Which vehicles are actually new, and which are worth watching?
The certainty differs substantially across this list. Nissan’s fourth-generation Rogue is specifically reported as a 2027 hybrid. Honda has announced that its next-generation hybrid models will begin launching in 2027, but the two vehicles shown so far are prototypes without confirmed production names. Toyota’s entries are 2027 model-year offerings—some refreshed or expanded, rather than brand-new nameplates.

Toyota’s 2027 model-year roster also includes a Highlander, but that vehicle is explicitly all-electric, not a hybrid, so it is not counted here. Toyota says its 2027 information will be updated as details become available.

What are the eight hybrids and prototypes to watch?
1. 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid: an upcoming named model
In an October 7, 2026 report, the Associated Press story by Edmunds’ Josh Jacquot describes the fourth-generation Rogue with Nissan’s E-Power system. This is a series hybrid: the gasoline engine works as a generator, while electric motors power the wheels. That differs from a typical hybrid in which an engine can also drive the wheels.
Nissan estimates 38 mpg combined city/highway, and the report gives a starting price of $37,065 including destination. Both are Nissan figures reported by AP/Edmunds, not independently verified results; the fuel-economy figure should not be treated as an EPA rating. The generator-and-motor layout may interest drivers who like electric drive but want gasoline onboard, though this is not a plug-in vehicle and the reported information does not establish an all-electric driving range.
2. Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype: a pipeline preview, not a confirmed model name
Honda said in May 2026 that its next-generation hybrid models would begin launching in 2027, with 15 planned globally by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030, primarily in North America. Its announcement described a two-motor hybrid system and showed a Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype scheduled to go on sale within two years of the briefing. Honda has not supplied a retail production name or final specifications for this sedan in the cited announcement.

Honda also set a target of more than 10% better fuel economy and 30% lower system cost for the next-generation hybrid system compared with the system introduced in 2023. Those are company targets, not measured results from a production car.
3. 2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid: a compact conventional hybrid
Toyota’s August 18, 2026 announcement lists LE, SE and XLE grades for the 2027 Corolla Hybrid. It specifies the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5), a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and 138 net combined horsepower. Toyota presents it as a 2027 model-year vehicle, not an all-new launch.
For a shopper who wants a conventional hybrid in a compact-car format, the Corolla’s size and powertrain category are more useful comparison points than placing it in a single efficiency ranking with larger SUVs or prototypes. The cited announcement does not provide an EPA fuel-economy figure.

4. 2027 Toyota Crown: choose between efficiency and Hybrid MAX power
The Crown lineup offers two distinct hybrid approaches. XLE, Limited and Nightshade use THS 5 and carry Toyota’s EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined rating. The Platinum grade uses Hybrid MAX, which Toyota rates at 340 net combined horsepower. AWD is standard across all grades, according to Toyota’s 2027 announcement.
This is a refreshed model-year option rather than a new nameplate. The trade-off is within the lineup: the cited efficiency figure applies to the three THS 5 grades, while Platinum is the higher-output Hybrid MAX choice.
5. 2027 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: an expanded three-row SUV lineup
Toyota’s October 2026 announcement lists a 2.5-liter hybrid with 245 total system horsepower and a Hybrid MAX version with 362. For 2027, the Hybrid Woodland joins the lineup with all-terrain tires, an additional half inch of ground clearance and AWD. Toyota says 2027 models are expected at dealerships later in 2026.

The Grand Highlander is a three-row SUV, so its potential appeal is passenger utility rather than being a direct size-for-size alternative to compact cars. Toyota’s announcement describes an updated and expanded lineup, not a new nameplate.
6. 2027 Toyota Prius: the conventional-hybrid benchmark in this group
Toyota’s 2027 Prius page gives the LE an EPA-estimated 55 mpg combined rating. FWD versions have 194 net combined horsepower; AWD versions have up to 196. This is the regular Prius hybrid, which does not have the plug-in model’s stated all-electric range or charging requirement.
7. 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid: short electric trips, gasoline backup
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) has a 13.6-kWh battery. Toyota reports up to 44 miles of EPA-estimated all-electric range for the SE and up to 39 miles for XSE, Nightshade and XSE Premium. The SE is rated at 51 mpg combined in hybrid mode. These range figures belong to the plug-in model, not the conventional Prius or Toyota’s other hybrids.

Toyota says charging takes about 11 hours from a standard 120-volt outlet or about four hours on a Level 2 charger under ideal conditions; the car includes a dual-voltage cable. It can operate as a hybrid when it is not plugged in. A PHEV may suit someone who can charge regularly and often drives within the available electric range, while retaining gasoline backup for longer trips. Charging times depend on conditions and the charging setup.
8. Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype: a possible premium SUV, details unresolved
Honda displayed an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype at its May 2026 briefing and included it in the next-generation hybrid program. The prototypes were scheduled to go on sale within two years of that briefing, but the cited announcement does not provide a production name, final specifications, exact launch date, price or EPA figures for this SUV. Treat it as a signal of Acura’s planned hybrid direction, not as a vehicle with confirmed retail specifications.

A conventional hybrid combines a gasoline engine and electric motor or motors, and does not require plugging in. Nissan’s described Rogue E-Power is also a non-plug-in hybrid, but its engine generates electricity for the motors that drive the vehicle. Toyota’s Hybrid MAX is a higher-output hybrid offering in specified grades. A PHEV adds a larger battery that can be charged externally and drive on electricity for a limited distance before operating as a hybrid.
A battery-electric vehicle runs on electricity stored in a battery and must be charged; it has no gasoline engine for backup. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the only vehicle in this list with stated electric-only range and charging times. None of the other listed models should be assumed to offer plug-in driving or an electric-only range based on the information cited here.

How should you decide whether to wait?
- If you want a named upcoming hybrid SUV: the 2027 Rogue is the clearest fit in the available reporting, but its stated fuel economy is Nissan’s estimate reported by AP/Edmunds, not an EPA result.
- If you need three rows: the Grand Highlander Hybrid is the relevant Toyota entry; compare its conventional-hybrid and Hybrid MAX versions for your priorities.
- If you prioritize fuel economy in a smaller car: the Corolla Hybrid and Prius are conventional-hybrid options with different body styles; the cited figures are not all supplied on the same basis, so avoid treating them as a controlled head-to-head comparison.
- If you can charge at home and want some gasoline-free trips: the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the option here with stated electric range. Consider whether its range and charging routine suit your daily mileage.
- If you want more power with AWD: the Crown’s Platinum Hybrid MAX and the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX are the higher-output Toyota configurations described here; the Crown has standard AWD across its grades, while the Grand Highlander Woodland is specifically described with AWD.
- If you are considering either prototype: wait for a production name, final specifications and local availability before making a purchase decision around it.
Before choosing, verify the final model-year specifications, delivery timing and availability in your market. Toyota’s 2027 roster is subject to additions as information becomes available, and Honda’s prototype details do not establish final production specifications. The 2027 Highlander is an EV, not an alternative hybrid in this group.
