Follow your vehicle’s owner manual for washing intervals, water pressure, wheel care, and any cautions around electrical components. Manufacturer advice varies by model and market, so there is no single schedule that fits every car.
1. Rinse off road salt and deicing chemicals
Salt and other deicing chemicals left on a vehicle can contribute to corrosion. After driving on treated roads, wash the car when practical rather than letting residue accumulate. Winter washing should be a routine, but the appropriate interval depends on your vehicle and conditions: Kia advises regular winter undercarriage washing, while Hyundai recommends monthly underbody flushing in high-corrosion areas. Those are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal weekly rule. Kia owner guidance and Hyundai owner manuals provide vehicle-specific care instructions.
2. Make sure the wash reaches the underbody
A clean-looking exterior does not mean the underside is clean. Choose a home or commercial wash that rinses beneath the vehicle and reaches the wheel openings. The useful comparison is not simply home versus commercial: it is whether the method removes salt and mud from the areas where they collect, while respecting the pressure and electrical-system cautions in your owner manual. Kia and Hyundai both call attention to underbody cleaning in winter care guidance.
3. Remove packed mud from hidden areas
Check wheel wells, the areas below fenders, and accessible underside locations where mud can pack in. Rinse until the material is removed; merely dampening a layer of accumulated mud can leave contaminants in place and may accelerate corrosion, according to Hyundai’s owner guidance. Avoid reaching beneath a vehicle that is not properly supported, and use the vehicle manual’s instructions for safe cleaning.

- Use on any rusty, metal surface to Instantly convert rust to a flat black, paintable surface that is protected and prevents future rust
- Oil based formula creates a bond with rusted surface that can be easily painted
- Dries tack free in 20-40 minutes, allow 24 hours before applying topcoat
- Unique formula transforms rusted surfaces saving time and effort sanding rust all the way down to bare metal
- Any-angle spray technology allows the can to be sprayed in any direction, even upside down
4. Keep drain openings clear
Door, rocker-panel, and frame drain openings let moisture escape. Check that they are not blocked by mud or debris, and clear them in a way that does not damage seals, paint, or wiring. If you cannot identify an opening or safely reach it, ask a qualified technician rather than probing blindly.
5. Protect intact paint and repair chips
A quality liquid or paste wax can help protect sound exterior paint when applied according to its directions. Wax is supplemental: it does not replace washing salt from the underbody. Chips and scrapes expose vulnerable material, so have damaged paint repaired appropriately using guidance for your specific vehicle. Kia, Hyundai, and Toyota Canada include paint protection or finish-care advice in their vehicle-care resources: Kia, Hyundai, and Toyota Canada.

- LONG-LASTING RUST PREVENTION SPRAY - Acts as a rust inhibitor to form a durable barrier that protects metal surfaces from moisture, salt, and rust in demanding conditions.
- LANOLIN UNDERCOATING SPRAY - Thick lanolin-based coating clings to metal surfaces while not sagging or dripping, making it ideal for automotive undercoating, equipment protection, and exposed metal.
- POWERFUL MOISTURE DISPLACER - Aggressively displaces moisture to prevent corrosion in automotive, marine, and outdoor environments. Provides a more durable barrier than standard penetrating oils and easily resists high-pressure washing so your protection stays.
- SHAKE WELL FOR CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE - The formula may thicken in cold temperatures. Shake thoroughly before use to ensure a smooth application and even coverage of the fluid film.
- WORK IT LIKE A PRO – Built for dependable performance and trusted by professionals as a premier rust inhibitor for metal. Use it to handle real-world jobs with confidence and minimal prep required. 50-state VOC compliant.
6. Clean wheels according to their finish
Wheel-care instructions are finish-specific. For clear-coated aluminum wheels, Kia advises cleaning them while cool with mild soap or neutral detergent. It warns against abrasive cleaners, solvents, wire brushes, and some harsh detergents. Do not assume those instructions apply to every wheel material or finish; consult your own manual before choosing a cleaner or tool.
7. Give the underside a thorough end-of-winter wash
When winter ends, remove the residue that has built up beneath the car. Kia recommends a thorough undercarriage wash at winter’s end, and Hyundai similarly recommends flushing the underbody. This is a useful seasonal cleanup in addition to washes during winter, not a substitute for them when salt exposure continues.

- Coats metal parts to lubricate and protect against rust and corrosion by blocking out air and moisture. Protects for up to 2 years when used indoors and for up to 1 year when used outdoors
- Recommended for preventative maintenance or for protection in corrosive environments, such as hot and highly humid or cold, and winter atmospheres
- Included straw creates a precision stream of lubricant for controlled application and fastens to the notched cap for secure storage
- Non-drying lubricant does not run and says where you spray it. 50-state VOC compliant and NSF Category A7
- WD-40 Brand believes in creating high-quality products that will not fail in extreme conditions. Professionals rely on WD-40 Specialist to get the job done right
8. Get corrosion checked periodically
Kia recommends an annual corrosion inspection by a professional technician or government inspection station. A professional can assess areas that are difficult to see and advise whether corrosion needs repair. A NHTSA-hosted technical bulletin also says severe corrosion should be repaired; it does not establish a universal coating or repair product.
9. Treat serious rust symptoms as a safety issue
Corrosion is not always cosmetic. Arrange prompt inspection if you notice flaking or scaling rust, soft or spongy brakes, fluid leaks, impaired directional control, new suspension noises, or rattling metal straps. These symptoms can indicate safety-relevant damage, so do not wait for the next routine wash or inspection.

Should you get professional rustproofing?
Rustproofing is an optional service, not a guaranteed solution. Quebec’s road-safety authority, SAAQ, says specialist rustproofing can delay rust and may suit owners who expect to keep a new vehicle for four years or more, or a used vehicle for at least five years. That is consumer guidance, not a product comparison or a promise of performance. Before a treatment, check compatibility with the vehicle maker, particularly for components that should not be coated. SAAQ’s guidance is available at its rustproofing page.
When weighing a treatment, consider the vehicle’s age and condition, how long you plan to keep it, local salt exposure, compatibility, cost, and any maintenance the treatment requires. The cited guidance does not rank providers or establish which coating is best.

Does a heated garage make rust worse?
SAAQ cautions that a heated garage can speed and increase corrosion effects. Treat this as general guidance rather than a rule for every garage, climate, vehicle, and drying condition. The key practical priority remains removing road salt and retained mud; the available guidance does not establish one ideal garage temperature or drying routine.
Follow vehicle-specific washing cautions
Washing procedures can differ for vehicles with high-voltage systems or sensitive electronics. A Mitsubishi technical bulletin hosted by NHTSA says to avoid splashing water on engine-bay connectors. For the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid specifically, it says not to wash while charging and not to use a high-pressure washer underneath. Those cautions are model-specific; do not extend them to every electric or plug-in hybrid car. Check the owner manual for your exact model before using pressure washing or washing near electrical components. The bulletin is available through NHTSA’s vehicle-safety resources.
