A 2026 AOL article lists nine less-expensive cars with reported figures from 3.2 to 1.9 seconds—but the BMW M5 ties that F1 benchmark, and the other eight are quicker only on the published numbers being compared. These were not nine head-to-head launches under identical conditions.
How fast was the McLaren F1 to 60 mph?
In its 1994 road test, Car and Driver measured the McLaren F1 at 3.2 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. The same test recorded an 11.1-second standing quarter-mile at 138 mph, with the measurements confirmed using Datron optical test gear.

That 3.2-second result is the baseline for the list below. A car with a reported 3.2-second time ties it; only a figure below 3.2 seconds is quicker in this comparison.
Which nine cars have reported 0–60 times at or below the F1’s?
The following figures are those reported by AOL on October 10, 2026, arranged from slowest to fastest. AOL’s list combines manufacturer claims, publication test results and figures reported in different contexts; it is not a single controlled comparison.

| Lucid Air Sapphire | 1.9 seconds | Quicker by the listed figure |
AOL’s article says the BMW M5’s company-quoted time is 3.4 seconds and that cited testing achieved 3.2 seconds. The table uses the article’s 3.2-second list figure, not the company-quoted figure. The Lucid Air Sapphire is the quickest entry in that list at 1.9 seconds.
Do these cars actually beat the McLaren F1 off the line?
The figures support a narrower conclusion: eight cars in AOL’s list have reported 0–60 mph times below Car and Driver’s 1994 F1 result, while the BMW M5 matches it. They do not establish that any of the cars won a direct launch against an F1. The cars were not shown to have been tested together on the same surface, with the same tires, weather, vehicle condition, launch method or timing convention.

- 2024 Race Season Model: Features the McLaren MCL38 from the 2024 racing season with accurate livery and design details
Those details matter. Car and Driver’s historical explanation of its acceleration testing notes that the publication sometimes brake-torques automatic cars, a technique that almost always produces quicker times than simply flooring the accelerator from a standstill. Launch technique, tire grip, rollout convention and test conditions can all affect a 0–60 result.
What the numbers do—and don’t—compare
A 0–60 time is one measure of straight-line acceleration, not a complete measure of performance or equivalence. The list spans sports cars, supercars, sedans and electric cars, and the figures come from different sources and contexts. They do not establish comparable handling, top speed, reliability, rarity, driver involvement or ownership costs.

The AOL article also discusses prices, but those figures have not been independently verified as current transaction prices. They should not be read as a current, like-for-like price comparison. In particular, an asking-price example for a used car is not directly comparable with a new-car MSRP.
