In January 2020, a roundup of nine camper concepts imagined RV comfort as more than a softer bed: flexible interiors, off-grid utilities, automation, outdoor living and even autonomous travel. They were design concepts and previews, not proof that every feature reached a production vehicle. Read them as a snapshot of the ambitions shaping the decade—not a record of what the industry ultimately delivered.
What these concepts were trying to change
The ideas fall into three useful groups. Electrification could mean an electric van or a powered trailer axle; off-grid capacity could combine stored energy with solar, wind or water collection; and comfort could come from rearranging a small interior, expanding outdoors, or automating setup. The concepts below illustrate those approaches, but the 2020 article does not establish current availability or later production outcomes.
Flexible interiors and new ways to use space
Volkswagen ID. Buzz: a flexible electric-van preview
The 2017 ID. Buzz concept used rail-mounted furniture, folding seats, swivel cab seating and a removable console table to make its cabin adaptable. It was not itself a dedicated camper-van concept; its relevance here is the idea that an electric van’s interior could be rearranged for different uses.
Knaus Tabbert Caravisio: a trailer shaped around openness
Shown in 2013, the Caravisio offered a tapered profile rather than the usual box-like trailer form. Its V-shaped front bed and covered wheels contributed to the exterior design, while a fold-out rear deck extended the living area. Electrochromic glass doors could adjust their tint and serve as a projection screen.

Hymer VisionVenture: a second level in a camper van
Hymer’s 2019 concept, based on a Mercedes Sprinter 4×4, paired an upscale interior with features intended for rugged travel, including underbody protection and all-terrain tires. An open-air deck and a staircase-accessed second story reimagined how a van could use its roof and limited footprint. The bathroom was designed to convert between configurations.
Hymer Concept Galileo: a customizable camper pod
Also presented as a vision in 2019, the Concept Galileo proposed customizable camper cabins mounted on autonomous chassis. Travelers would choose destinations and activities from presets, with the autonomous operation belonging to the concept’s future vision—not an established production capability.

Energy and independence away from hookups
KZ Sonic X: batteries, solar and water for off-grid stays
The 26-foot Sonic X concept was designed around extended stays away from hookups. New Atlas reported that it included 1,000 amp-hours of lithium batteries, 1,000 watts of solar capacity and 379 liters of water, along with water extraction and filtration systems and equipment-carrying features. These are figures reported for the concept; the article cautioned that the production Sonic X was not as capable as the concept.
sCarabane: turning toward sun and wind
The sCarabane was a folding caravan concept designed to rotate to follow the sun. Its energy ideas combined solar charging and water heating with wind power. New Atlas described it as 26 feet (7.9 meters) long and 5,500 pounds (2,500 kilograms), and noted that its dining set could convert into a bed.

- Kit suitable for ages 12 to adult.

Dethleffs E.Home Coco: assistance from the trailer axle
The 2018 E.Home Coco concept approached electrification from the towable side. New Atlas reported dual 40-kW motors on the axle and an 80-kWh lithium battery, plus roof-mounted solar. The powered axle was intended to reduce the effective load being towed and store energy for use at a campsite or at home. Those figures describe the concept as reported, not a general specification for electric-assist caravans.
Automation and luxury amenities
Mercedes-Benz Concept Marco Polo: voice-controlled setup
The 2018 midsize pop-up van concept envisioned voice-controlled setup actions: raising the roof, leveling the suspension and deploying an awning. Adjustable glass tinting was proposed as an alternative to conventional shades. The draw was practical convenience in a compact vehicle, rather than a larger footprint.

Furrion Elysium: a motorhome as a luxury destination
Debuting at CES 2017, the 45-foot (13.7-meter) Class A Elysium concept treated the roof as an amenity space. It included a yacht-like deck, hot tub, sun pads and a height-adjustable landing pad for a Robinson R22 helicopter. Inside, the concept added a chef’s kitchen, three 75-inch televisions, a fireplace and a smart bathroom. It was an extravagant design exercise, not evidence of a production RV with those features.

The roundup captured a moment when “van life,” “overlanding,” “glamping” and “digital nomad” had become aspirational lifestyle language, as New Atlas editor C.C. Weiss observed on January 3, 2020. Its concepts suggest what designers hoped comfort might mean: an adaptable cabin, more self-sufficiency, space that unfolds, or amenities once associated with a fixed home or resort. The article is historical evidence of those ambitions; it does not establish which forecasts came true, which concepts reached production, or what is sold today.
