Automotive NFTs were experiments in digital scarcity, brand membership, physical authentication, and vehicle provenance—not a single new type of car asset. These eight projects show what automakers actually tested, what ownership rights buyers did and did not receive, and why a historical NFT launch should not be mistaken for a current investment opportunity.
Automotive NFTs were not one single product category. Automakers used them as digital art, membership passes, physical-digital collectibles, vehicle-history certificates, and fan-community rewards. The eight projects below are important because they show how car brands tested blockchain-based scarcity and ownership—not because every token became a valuable investment or remains available to buy.

The most durable ideas were the ones connected to something outside the token itself: Lamborghini paired digital art with rare physical objects, Alfa Romeo used an NFT as a vehicle-data certificate, and McLaren, Hyundai, Porsche, and Nissan explored access and community. Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, provides an essential reminder that owning an NFT does not automatically mean owning the associated artwork or its copyright.
What made automotive NFTs different?
Traditional automotive memorabilia is physical: a signed photograph, a limited-edition model, a build sheet, or a vehicle with documented history. An NFT can represent a unique blockchain record connected to a digital image, a membership benefit, a physical object, or a data record. That flexibility allowed automakers to experiment with several models at once.
#1 Best Overall
| Model | What the NFT represented | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Digital art | A unique or limited token-linked image inspired by a vehicle or brand | Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda |
| Membership and community | Access to online groups, activities, rewards, or future experiences | McLaren, Hyundai, Nissan |
| Physical-digital object | A token connected to a scarce, authenticated physical item | Lamborghini |
| Vehicle provenance | A digital record associated with vehicle data and maintenance history | Alfa Romeo |
| Fan collectible | A branded digital collectible intended to deepen participation in a car or racing ecosystem | Hyundai, McLaren Racing |
That distinction matters. An NFT may prove control of a particular blockchain token, but it is not automatically a vehicle title, a copyright assignment, a commercial license, or proof that the buyer owns a physical car.
1. Lamborghini Space Time Memory
Lamborghini’s Space Time Memory is one of the clearest examples of a physical-digital automotive NFT. The project consisted of five digital artworks connected to five physical Space Key objects. Each key contained carbon-fiber material that had traveled to the International Space Station, and a QR code connected the physical object with its digital artwork.
The concept was trendsetting because the scarcity did not exist only on a blockchain. The token was paired with an unusual, brand-authenticated artifact that could be held, displayed, and verified. That combination addressed one of the most persistent objections to purely digital collectibles: the feeling that the buyer received only an image and a transaction record.

The physical Space Key was not simply merchandise; it acted as an authenticity and scarcity anchor for the digital work.
Important availability note: the project should be treated as a historical limited release, not as a Space Key that ordinary buyers can assume is currently available. A past launch, a surviving official page, or a resale listing does not establish that Lamborghini is operating an open mint today.
2. McLaren MSO LAB Genesis
McLaren Automotive’s MSO LAB Genesis collection featured 2,012 NFTs associated with the McLaren P1 and P1 GTR. MSO, or McLaren Special Operations, gave the project a natural connection to personalization, limited production, and the brand’s most recognizable performance cars.
The collection was more than a set of car pictures. McLaren positioned ownership as an entry point to an evolving MSO LAB community, combining generative automotive design with membership utility. The idea was that the token could become a relationship layer between the brand and its most engaged digital collectors rather than a one-time art purchase.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →McLaren’s project materials also documented the practical steps involved in participation, including wallet setup, minting, and secondary sales through OpenSea. That documentation makes MSO LAB useful as a case study in how mainstream brands tried to reduce the technical friction surrounding NFTs.
There is an important branding distinction here: McLaren Automotive’s MSO LAB Genesis collection is separate from McLaren Racing’s digital collectibles platform. The racing program focuses on fan collectibles connected with race weekends and motorsport participation. They should not be presented as one unified NFT collection simply because both carry the McLaren name.
As with any project that references a secondary marketplace, a documented route to OpenSea does not guarantee liquidity, a particular resale price, or continued access to brand benefits. The token’s launch quantity and McLaren association establish historical context, not present market value.

3. Porsche’s 911-centered digital art
Porsche took a more participatory approach with its 2022 Web3 project centered on a white Porsche 911. The program offered 7,500 digital collector items, but collectors did not simply receive an identical finished image. They selected one of three creative routes—Performance, Heritage, or Lifestyle—and those choices influenced the visual direction of their individual works through a longer creative process.

That approach made Porsche’s project notable. It treated the collector as a participant in the design journey rather than merely a customer buying a completed digital poster. The three routes also translated familiar Porsche brand themes into a digital format: motorsport and capability, the company’s historical identity, and everyday lifestyle.
Porsche described access to selected virtual and real-world experiences as part of the project. The wording is important: access to selected experiences is not the same as a guaranteed permanent benefit, a free car event, or ownership of a Porsche. Benefits connected with a digital project can be limited by eligibility, timing, geography, or program changes.
Porsche had also tested NFT-based automotive art through an earlier auctioned design sketch combining the 911 with the Taycan Cross Turismo. Taken together, those projects show two different approaches: one-off digital automotive art and a larger collectible program designed around personalization and participation.
4. Hyundai Metamobility NFTs
Hyundai’s Metamobility project borrowed heavily from gaming and fandom. It began with 10,000 Shooting Star NFTs, which used a reveal process before later transforming into MobED NFTs. Hyundai subsequently introduced an IONIQ 6 collection as part of the broader digital universe.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The staged reveal was significant because it made the collection feel like an evolving set of characters rather than a static gallery. Collectors had to follow the project’s development, watch assets change, and pay attention to rarity and community activity. This is a familiar structure in games and fan communities, but it was relatively new territory for a mass-market automaker.
Hyundai framed Metamobility as a community-driven effort connecting mobility branding, digital collectibles, and online-to-offline experiences. That meant the NFT served several possible purposes at once:
- an individually identifiable digital collectible;
- a membership or community signal;
- a way to participate in reveals and transformations;
- a possible gateway to future brand activities or benefits.
Hyundai’s official NFT materials state that completed assets are available on secondary marketplaces such as OpenSea. That statement describes a marketplace pathway, not a guarantee that a particular token is listed, liquid, authentic, or still connected to every original benefit. Anyone considering a resale purchase should verify the collection’s contract address and current utility through an official Hyundai source rather than relying only on a marketplace title or seller description.
5. Nissan Passport Beta
Nissan Passport Beta used the NFT as a membership pass rather than primarily as a piece of car art. Nissan described a limited membership NFT, a dedicated wallet intended to make participation easier for newcomers, a Discord community, token-earning activities, and automotive-oriented rewards.
This model addressed a practical problem with early NFT programs: many interested customers did not already understand seed phrases, wallet connections, gas fees, or marketplace transfers. A brand-designed wallet could make the experience less intimidating and keep the customer relationship closer to Nissan’s own ecosystem.

Passport Beta’s displayed roadmap included stages beginning in December 2024 and continuing through 2025. Those dates should be read as the project’s published roadmap, not as proof that every stage, reward, or membership benefit remains active. Unless Nissan’s official program page confirms current availability, Passport Beta is best treated as a dated case study.
The project is still trendsetting because it illustrates the membership-pass model clearly. The NFT was intended to support an ongoing relationship: join a community, complete activities, earn tokens or rewards, and receive automotive-focused engagement opportunities. That is a different proposition from buying a limited image and waiting for its resale price to rise.
6. Alfa Romeo Tonale NFT certificate
Alfa Romeo’s Tonale points toward the most practical use of automotive NFTs: vehicle provenance. Alfa Romeo says the vehicle includes an NFT digital certificate that can register vehicle data and maintenance history, creating a unique record intended to support credibility in the used-car market.
This use case is fundamentally different from the collectible-art projects. The value is not supposed to come from visual rarity or community status. Instead, the digital certificate is intended to make a vehicle’s life easier to document. A consistent record could help establish whether maintenance was performed, when key events occurred, and how confidently a later buyer can assess the car’s history.
That does not make the NFT a replacement for every other form of documentation. Buyers should still check service invoices, inspection records, recall completion, title history, mileage evidence, accident reports, and the condition of the vehicle itself. A blockchain record can help with integrity and continuity, but it cannot make inaccurate information true if incorrect data was entered at the source.
Tonale is therefore one of the strongest counterpoints to the assumption that automotive NFTs are only speculative digital art. It shows how the underlying idea—a tamper-resistant, uniquely identifiable digital record—could be applied to an ordinary ownership task.
7. Mercedes-Benz NXT Machine collection
Mercedes-Benz used NFTs in its Mercedes-Benz NXT digital-art program. One notable project was the Machine collection, created with Fingerprints DAO. The collection extended Mercedes-Benz’s interest in digital design and generative art beyond a conventional vehicle launch or advertising campaign.
Mercedes-Benz NXT is especially useful for understanding the legal limits of NFT ownership. The accompanying license terms distinguish between owning the token and owning the underlying artwork. Buying the NFT documents limited rights connected with the referenced work, but it does not automatically transfer ownership of the artwork itself.
In practical terms, an NFT buyer should not assume that the purchase includes:
- copyright in the image or design;
- the right to reproduce the artwork commercially;
- permission to use Mercedes-Benz trademarks in advertising;
- ownership of the original digital file or creative work;
- the right to create merchandise, derivatives, or branded products.
The actual rights depend on the specific project’s license. Before buying, read the terms governing the exact token, not a general social-media description or a marketplace seller’s summary. Mercedes-Benz NXT demonstrates why “I own the NFT” and “I own the art” are two different statements.

8. Mazda MX-5 Miata in Astar Yoki Origins
Mazda participated in Astar’s Yoki Origins campaign with NFT artwork featuring the MX-5 Miata. The project is notable less for the size of a Mazda-owned ecosystem than for the way an established automaker entered an enterprise-oriented NFT campaign through a broader platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe evidence supports Mazda’s participation and the MX-5 subject matter. It does not establish that Mazda operates a broad, ongoing standalone NFT marketplace, nor does it establish a current open Mazda mint. That distinction matters because a campaign appearance can be a limited brand collaboration rather than the beginning of a permanent collector program.
Mazda’s example shows how NFTs allowed automakers to test Web3 audiences without necessarily building a full proprietary marketplace. It also reinforces a useful research rule: confirm whether an NFT was issued directly by the automaker, created with a partner, or merely features a licensed vehicle image before treating it as an official brand collection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What these eight projects reveal
1. Digital art was the easiest entry point
Porsche, Hyundai, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, and Lamborghini all used digital imagery or token-linked design to extend automotive styling into Web3. Digital art was easy to explain visually, easy to limit by quantity, and naturally suited to online communities.
But digital art was also the most exposed to changing market sentiment. A limited quantity does not create demand by itself. Nor does a famous badge guarantee that a token will retain its launch price.

2. The more useful programs connected the token to access or data
McLaren, Hyundai, and Nissan experimented with gated communities, activities, and rewards. Alfa Romeo connected its certificate to vehicle history. These models attempted to give the token a function beyond display.
Utility is not automatically permanent. It depends on the automaker continuing to operate the community, honor the benefit, maintain the supporting technology, and communicate clearly with holders. A token can remain on a blockchain even after its original website, Discord group, event schedule, or reward system changes.
3. Physical objects made digital scarcity easier to understand
Lamborghini’s Space Key solved a storytelling problem elegantly. The buyer was not asked to value an invisible digital distinction alone; the project tied the token to a scarce object containing unusual material and a clear connection to the brand’s space-themed narrative.
4. “Ownership” requires precise language
There are at least four separate things a buyer might own or control:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The token: the blockchain record associated with a wallet.
- The media: the image, animation, or file linked to the token.
- The license: the permissions granted by the project’s terms.
- The physical or membership benefit: an object, event right, reward, or service that may have separate conditions.
Those four elements may be held by different parties and governed by different documents. Mercedes-Benz NXT makes the distinction explicit, but it applies broadly across automotive NFTs.

5. Secondary-market access is not the same as liquidity
McLaren’s materials reference secondary sales through OpenSea, and Hyundai’s official NFT page references secondary marketplaces. That tells collectors where a project may have been traded; it does not promise that buyers or sellers will be available at a desirable price.
Before treating a marketplace listing as an opportunity, verify the official collection, contract address, token identifier, current benefits, creator royalty terms if relevant, and whether the project’s original community is still active. A listing can remain visible long after the practical utility has faded.
What still exists, and what is only historical?
Automotive NFT pages often remain online after a launch has ended. A careful reader should separate four different statuses:

| Historical launch | The collection was announced or sold at a particular time, but that does not mean a new mint is open. |
| Official documentation | The automaker still explains the project, its artwork, or its original mechanics. |
| Secondary-market presence | Tokens may be listed for resale, but availability, authenticity, price, and benefits require separate verification. |
| Current open offer | The brand explicitly confirms that a buyer can currently mint or purchase the asset and explains the present terms. |
The examples in this article should not be read as a list of currently open purchasing opportunities. Nissan’s roadmap is dated, Mazda’s evidence does not establish an ongoing standalone marketplace, and Lamborghini’s Space Keys were a limited physical-digital release. McLaren and Hyundai documented secondary-market routes, but those routes do not establish value or continued utility. Alfa Romeo’s Tonale certificate is a vehicle feature rather than a conventional public collectible mint.
A safer way to evaluate an automotive NFT
- Start with the official automaker page. Confirm that the project is genuine and determine whether the brand describes it as an NFT, digital collectible, membership pass, certificate, or partner campaign.
- Identify what is actually being sold. Is it art, access, a physical item, a vehicle record, or a combination?
- Read the license. Look specifically for copyright, commercial-use, display, resale, and trademark restrictions.
- Check the dates. A roadmap from 2024 or 2025 is historical unless the official program confirms that its stages and benefits remain current.
- Verify the contract and collection identity. Never rely solely on a marketplace name, image, or seller description.
- Assess utility independently from price. Ask whether the community, event access, certificate system, or other benefit is still operating.
- Secure the wallet carefully. Use only the wallet and marketplace process identified by official project materials, and never share a recovery phrase or approve an unfamiliar transaction.
- Assume value can fall to zero. Brand reputation, launch scarcity, and historical novelty are not investment guarantees.
If you are new to NFT terminology, an NFT collecting guide such as The NFT Book: Everything You Need to Know about the Art and Collecting of Non-Fungible Tokens can provide general background on wallets, digital art, and collecting before you compare automotive projects. It is a general NFT reference, not a guide to all eight automotive examples or a recommendation to buy any particular token.
Are automotive NFTs the future of car ownership?
These projects do not prove that NFTs will replace vehicle titles, service records, racing memorabilia, or conventional customer-loyalty programs. They do show where the technology was useful to automakers:
- making digital design collectible;
- creating a visible community membership layer;
- connecting a digital record to a rare physical object;
- documenting vehicle history and maintenance;
- building new ways for fans to interact with a brand.
The strongest long-term applications are likely to be the ones where a token solves a real authentication, access, or record-keeping problem. A token that exists only because scarcity was declared may be more dependent on hype. The automotive experiments covered here are therefore best understood as prototypes for brand ownership, provenance, and digital participation—not as a new class of guaranteed car assets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does owning an automotive NFT mean I own the car or the artwork?
No. An automotive NFT generally represents a blockchain token connected to art, access, a certificate, or another benefit. It does not automatically transfer ownership of a vehicle, copyright, commercial-use rights, or the underlying artwork.
Can automotive NFTs still be bought or sold?
Not necessarily. Some projects documented secondary-market routes, including McLaren’s references to OpenSea and Hyundai’s marketplace guidance, but a listing does not guarantee liquidity, authenticity, current benefits, or a particular price.
Which automotive NFT projects had practical utility?
The Alfa Romeo Tonale certificate is the clearest utility-focused example because it is intended to record vehicle data and maintenance history. Lamborghini’s Space Key also had a strong physical-world connection. Their usefulness is different from the speculative appeal of limited digital art.
Are automotive NFTs a good investment?
No. Historical launch quantities, automaker branding, rarity, and past resale activity do not establish future value. Treat these projects as collectibles or technology experiments, verify current terms, and never buy solely because a token is associated with a famous car brand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Bottom line: Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo made the strongest physical-world cases for automotive NFTs, while Porsche, Hyundai, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, and Nissan explored digital art, community, and membership. Their historical importance is real, but present availability, utility, legal rights, and market value must be checked project by project.
