iOS 26 makes CarPlay more like an extension of the redesigned iPhone without abandoning its driving-focused interface. The features still depend on your iPhone, vehicle hardware, screen type, and app support.
What iOS 26 changes in CarPlay
iOS 26 makes CarPlay look more like the redesigned iPhone interface, but it does not turn CarPlay into a general-purpose phone screen. The main changes are a Liquid Glass-inspired visual refresh, a smaller incoming-call view, Tapbacks and pinned conversations in Messages, configurable iPhone widgets, and Live Activities for timely status information.

The update is best understood as an expansion of CarPlay’s glanceable information surfaces. Navigation, audio, calls, and driving-related tasks remain the focus. Whether you can interact with a new feature depends on both the app and the hardware in your vehicle.
Liquid Glass reaches the car display
Apple’s Liquid Glass design language, introduced across iOS 26, extends into CarPlay. The result is a closer visual relationship between the iPhone and the vehicle display: controls, panels, color treatment, and system surfaces feel more like part of the same software environment.

That does not mean every car renders an identical Liquid Glass interface. CarPlay is displayed on screens with different sizes, aspect ratios, resolutions, and control methods. A touchscreen, rotary-controller system, and head-up display will not present the experience in exactly the same way. The practical change is Apple’s overall visual direction, not a promise of uniform graphics on every vehicle.
For existing CarPlay apps, much of the updated appearance is automatic. Developers do not necessarily need to redesign an entire app to receive the new system treatment, although they do need to test how their interface looks at the new scale and within each vehicle configuration.
Incoming calls take up less space
Incoming calls now use a more compact presentation. CarPlay can identify who is calling without allowing the call interface to obscure as much of the active navigation view.

Messages adds Tapbacks and pinned conversations
Messages in CarPlay gains two familiar iPhone features:
- Tapbacks: quick reactions to a message, such as a thumbs-up or heart, without composing a longer reply.
- Pinned conversations: important message threads can remain easier to find instead of being buried among newer conversations.
These are convenience improvements for short, routine interactions. They are not a reason to carry on an extended text conversation from the driver’s seat. CarPlay’s voice controls and brief, glanceable actions remain the safer way to manage communication while driving.

Widgets bring small pieces of iPhone information to CarPlay
Widgets are one of the more substantial additions in iOS 26. iPhone widgets can appear on the CarPlay Widgets screen, giving drivers small amounts of timely information without opening a full app.

How CarPlay widgets work
CarPlay uses the small widget family for this vehicle-oriented context. That matters because a CarPlay widget is not a miniature version of an entire iPhone app. It is intended to show one useful piece of information quickly, with a simple layout that can be understood from the driver’s seat.
An app does not need to have a complete CarPlay app to provide a widget. A developer can support the relevant widget family while leaving the full app on the iPhone. Developers can also mark a widget as unsuitable for CarPlay when its content or interaction model is not appropriate for a vehicle.
Apple’s rendering guidance accounts for the in-car viewing distance: CarPlay widgets appear scaled up and in full color. The most effective designs therefore use large type, strong information hierarchy, minimal text, and backgrounds that can be removed or adapted when the system needs a clearer presentation.
Touchscreen versus non-touchscreen behavior
Not all CarPlay widget behavior is the same:

There are two separate requirements for opening something from a widget. First, the widget must support the relevant CarPlay behavior. Second, the associated app must have CarPlay integration. A widget can still appear even when the app does not offer a full CarPlay application, but it cannot be assumed that tapping it will open a usable in-car app.

How to configure widgets
- Update the iPhone to a supported iOS 26 release.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay on the iPhone.
- Select the vehicle or CarPlay connection you want to configure.
- Open the Widgets option, if it is available, then add, remove, or reorder the supported widgets.
- Connect to CarPlay and open the CarPlay Widgets screen to check the result.
The available menu and widget list can vary by iOS release, vehicle, installed apps, and developer support. If a widget does not appear, first check that the app is updated and that its developer supports the small widget family for CarPlay. If it appears but cannot be used, check whether the vehicle has a touchscreen; not every widget action is available on non-touch hardware.
Live Activities show changing information in CarPlay
Live Activities bring real-time progress and status information to CarPlay Dashboard or notifications. Instead of requiring a driver to open an app repeatedly, a supported app can publish a current state that remains visible as it changes.
Apple’s consumer examples include flight status and sports scores. Depending on the app and service, other useful examples may include an order’s progress, an arrival status, an electric-vehicle charging state, or another time-sensitive event. These are examples of the type of information Live Activities can present, not a guarantee that every app offers a CarPlay Live Activity.

Installing iOS 26 alone does not create Live Activities for apps that have not added them.
Live Activities are most useful when they answer a short question at a glance: Has the status changed? How far along is the event? Is an action required? They should not be treated as an invitation to browse a feed, watch content, or repeatedly interact with the phone while driving.
Eligibility: your iPhone and your car have separate requirements
To check the software on the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update. Do not assume that one iOS 26 point-release number applies to every iPhone. Apple lists updates by device group, so the release offered on your phone may differ from the one offered on another model.

An iOS 26-compatible iPhone does not guarantee CarPlay compatibility. Apple says CarPlay can be standard or optional in many new vehicles from 2016 onward, but model-year rules are not enough to confirm support for a particular car. The exact trim, infotainment system, market, and manufacturer software can matter. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications or ask a dealer before treating a vehicle as compatible.

Optional accessory: making wired CarPlay wireless
Some vehicles support CarPlay only through a wired USB connection even though the iPhone and the software are fully compatible. If your vehicle already launches wired CarPlay successfully, a wireless CarPlay adapter can be an optional way to remove the cable from the connection process.
An adapter is not required for iOS 26. It does not add widgets or Live Activities, and it cannot make an unsupported vehicle compatible with CarPlay. Compatibility is dependent on the vehicle’s existing wired CarPlay implementation, the adapter, and the iPhone, so check the adapter’s fit for your exact vehicle before buying.
What CarPlay Ultra changes
CarPlay Ultra is related to standard CarPlay but is a more deeply integrated vehicle system. Apple describes it as extending across the vehicle’s screens and incorporating information and controls such as gauges, radio, and climate functions.
The iOS 26 visual and feature updates also reach CarPlay Ultra, but Ultra availability is controlled by automakers and vehicle systems. It should not be treated as a software switch that appears in every car with standard CarPlay.
Apple initially announced rollout with Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada in May 2025. That announcement does not establish universal availability across Aston Martin, other automakers, or every market. Check the manufacturer and vehicle-specific information for current support.

- Updated appearance: existing CarPlay apps receive much of the new system appearance automatically, but should be tested on real vehicle configurations and in the CarPlay Simulator.
- Widgets: developers can use WidgetKit and the small widget family to provide glanceable information. They should exclude a widget from CarPlay when its content or interactions are unsuitable for driving.
- Live Activities: ActivityKit can expose changing status information in CarPlay Dashboard or notifications.
- Display zoom: the updated CarPlay capabilities include display zoom considerations, making distance legibility and visual hierarchy important during testing.
- Navigation metadata: navigation apps have new opportunities to provide turn-by-turn metadata to the instrument cluster or head-up display in supported vehicle environments.
A widget that looks attractive on an iPhone Home Screen may fail in a car. Dense copy, small labels, high-resolution decorative images, or frequent touch interaction are poor fits for a display viewed while driving. The better approach is a short status, a large readable value, and a clear visual hierarchy that remains useful at a distance.
What iOS 26 does not do
- It does not make every iPhone-compatible car compatible with CarPlay.
- It does not make every widget interactive.
- It does not turn a non-touch display into a touchscreen.
- It does not make a wireless adapter necessary for the new features.
- It does not make a wireless adapter work in a vehicle that lacks compatible CarPlay.
- It does not make Messages, Live Activities, or other new surfaces safe for extended use while driving.
- It does not make CarPlay Ultra universally available.
Bottom line for drivers
CarPlay in iOS 26 is a refinement with useful new information surfaces, not a wholesale replacement. The Liquid Glass-inspired appearance makes the iPhone and car interface feel more consistent, compact calls protect more of the navigation view, Messages gains quick Tapbacks and pinned conversations, and widgets and Live Activities make timely information easier to see without opening a full app.
The best results depend on three things: an iPhone that can run iOS 26, a vehicle with compatible CarPlay hardware and software, and apps whose developers support the new vehicle-oriented features. Check all three before troubleshooting or buying accessories.
