KTW Apps’ GPS Speedometer: Odometer HUD is the best all-round choice for most Android drivers. It combines a large live-speed display with HUD mode, trip statistics, speed alerts, floating-window support, and an advertised offline mode. Choose SpeedHUD for a dedicated windshield display, Tech 4 All’s GPS Speedometer for trip history, or Velociraptor if you want a speed overlay on Google Maps or Waze and accept its older update history and Accessibility requirement.
These apps estimate speed from your phone’s GPS. They do not read the vehicle’s wheel sensors or engine computer, and none should replace a legally required vehicle speedometer.

The KTW Apps listing combines live speed, trip distance, average and top speed, multiple units, HUD mode, speed-limit alerts, a floating window, history, export, and advertised offline operation. It is the strongest general-purpose package in this group and was listed with 10M+ downloads, a 4.6-star rating, ads, in-app purchases, and a July 10, 2026 update.
Its floating window is useful when Google Maps or Waze is occupying the screen. HUD mode mirrors the display so it can be reflected from the windshield, while the trip tools make it suitable for mileage and journey records.
Important caveats: The listing’s feature claims are not an independent accuracy test. Its data-safety panel says the app may share financial information, app-performance information, and device or other IDs; it also reports that data is not encrypted and cannot be deleted. Review those disclosures before installing.
Choose it if: You want the broadest combination of display, alerts, overlay, and trip features. Skip it if: you want an ad-free experience or have strict data-sharing requirements.
2. GPS Speedometer – Odometer App — Tech 4 All Apps
Best for: Trip history and a feature-heavy dashboard.
This app lists digital and analog displays, HUD mode, speed alerts, route history, map views, offline mode, widgets, floating display support, and trip statistics. Google Play showed 10M+ downloads, a 4.0-star rating, ads and in-app purchases, and a July 9, 2026 update.
It is the better pick than KTW if saved journeys, route visualization, and dashboard-style statistics matter more than keeping the interface minimal. The listing also makes it a candidate for drivers who want both a live speed display and a record of distance, duration, average speed, or maximum speed.

3. Speedometer Go: GPS & HUD — Zecrari
Best for: A clean, minimalist speed display.
Zecrari’s listing says Speedometer Go provides real-time speed, HUD mode, trip tracking, speed-limit alerts, offline use, and MPH, KM/H, and knots. It also says the app has no ads or tracking, making it the most attractive option here for readers who want a simple interface without an obviously ad-driven experience.
That “no tracking” statement is a developer claim. Check the current Google Play data-safety panel, privacy policy, and monetization details before installation because those details can change.

4. SpeedHUD – GPS Speedometer
Best for: A dedicated windshield HUD.
SpeedHUD focuses on HUD projection and lists speed-limit alerts, calibration, trip controls, history, export, and several measurement units. It is a sensible choice for a motorcycle, backup car, or older vehicle where the driver wants a large reflected speed readout rather than a complete navigation system.
The listing discusses requiring location permission “all the time” for trip calculation. That can increase privacy exposure and battery use, so grant background location only if the feature genuinely requires it and you are comfortable with the trade-off.
Choose it if: the windshield display is your priority. Skip it if: you want to minimize background location access or need a clearly documented Google Maps/Waze overlay.

It supports several units and was listed with ads, in-app purchases, 1M+ downloads, a 3.8-star rating, and an April 18, 2026 update.
“Accurate” is part of the product name and developer positioning, not proof from a controlled comparison. The app may be useful for approximate speed over ground when cycling, boating, or traveling by train, but GPS speed is not identical to speed through water, and tunnels or enclosed areas can disrupt the reading.
Choose it if: you need a basic speed and odometer tool away from reliable mobile data. Skip it if: you need authoritative speed-limit data or a polished navigation overlay.

6. Velociraptor – Speed Limits & Speedometer
Best for: Showing speed and speed-limit information over a navigation app.
Velociraptor is designed as a floating companion for map apps. It displays a speedometer and speed-limit monitor over selected navigation applications, supports tolerance settings and sound alerts, and uses speed-limit data from OpenStreetMap. It is the clearest fit for someone who wants Google Maps or Waze to remain visible while a speed display sits on top.
There are two major drawbacks. First, the app requires Accessibility access to detect foreground map apps. Accessibility permission is powerful, so grant it only when you understand why it is needed. Second, the listing shows a December 18, 2020 update. That does not prove the app is unusable, but it creates more compatibility risk on current Android versions than the alternatives updated in 2026.
The listing also says custom third-party elements do not appear on the Android Auto display, although alerts may still work with Android Auto. This is a phone overlay, not a guaranteed Android Auto integration.
Choose it if: the overlay is more important than update freshness. Skip it if: you dislike Accessibility access, need current Android Auto display support, or require highly reliable speed-limit information.

7. GPS Speedometer – HUD & PiP — Redif Apps
Best for: A resizable picture-in-picture display.
Redif Apps lists a PiP window that can sit over Google Maps or Waze, along with HUD mode and a minimalist dashboard. PiP can be more convenient than a traditional floating window because Android manages it as a video-style overlay area, but support and behavior can vary with Android version, phone manufacturer, and background restrictions.
Before relying on it for a long drive, confirm that the PiP window remains visible while navigation is active, that the app retains its location fix in the background, and that battery optimization does not suspend it.
Choose it if: you specifically want an adjustable overlay over Maps or Waze. Skip it if: you want extensive, well-documented trip logging or guaranteed Android Auto support.
8. SpeedView: GPS Speedometer — Code Sector Australia
Best for: A lightweight, basic speed display.
SpeedView’s streamlined listing describes HUD mode and a speed graph, with no ads or in-app purchases in that edition. It can appeal to readers who want very little beyond speed and a simple visual history.

It is a niche recommendation rather than a leading choice: Google Play showed only 10K+ downloads, a 3.2-star rating, and an August 7, 2021 update. Those figures do not prove poor performance, but they suggest less current momentum and greater compatibility uncertainty.
Choose it if: you want a small, uncomplicated app and accept the old update date. Skip it if: active maintenance, modern overlays, or extensive trip tools matter.

What a GPS speedometer actually measures
A phone speedometer uses location hardware to estimate movement speed from satellite-position changes. It does not directly measure wheel rotation, transmission output, or engine data unless paired with separate vehicle hardware.
GPS speed can lag during acceleration and braking, fluctuate at low speeds, or become stale when the phone loses a reliable fix. Performance depends on the phone, placement, satellite visibility, software filtering, and surrounding conditions. Tunnels, parking garages, dense city streets, wooded roads, and indoor locations are particularly problematic.
Do not treat an app’s name or marketing language—such as “accurate” or “professional”—as independent evidence. A car’s factory speedometer is also not a laboratory reference, so comparing the two can provide only a rough indication of differences.
Offline does not mean every feature works offline
“Offline” usually means the phone can calculate speed after acquiring a GPS fix without mobile data. It does not necessarily mean that the app can display maps, retrieve current speed limits, sync trips, or download missing road information.
Speed-limit data is a separate issue. A manually configured alert—such as warning at 65 mph—is not the same as detecting the posted limit for each road. KTW, Tech 4 All, Speedometer Go, SpeedHUD, and Maaj Tech list speed-limit alerts, but the supplied listings do not establish whether those alerts are database-driven or manually configured. Velociraptor specifically identifies OpenStreetMap as its speed-limit source, but its data may be incomplete, outdated, or wrong.
Always follow posted signs and local law. No phone database should override road signage, temporary construction limits, school-zone schedules, or local restrictions.
HUD, overlays, and Android Auto
HUD mode mirrors the phone’s screen so it can reflect from the windshield. It works best in low ambient light, with the phone secured flat on the dashboard and brightness adjusted. It is not a certified automotive projection system and is not automatically safer than a normal display.

Floating and PiP modes can keep speed visible while Google Maps or Waze is open. Permissions and privacy to check

- Data-safety disclosures: Check whether identifiers, location, performance data, or other information may be collected or shared.
Permissions can change between versions. Review the current Play Store listing and Android permission prompts rather than relying only on an old roundup.

Battery, heat, and mounting
Continuous GPS, a bright display, HUD mode, maps, mobile data, background tracking, and poor signal conditions can all increase battery use. Use a stable mount and a vehicle charger for long journeys. Avoid trapping the phone in direct sun or an enclosed dashboard compartment, especially while charging.
Configure the app while parked. The mount must not block the driver’s view, airbags, controls, or access to the phone. A speedometer app is a supplemental display, not a reason to interact with the handset while driving.
Setup checklist
- Install the exact app and developer listed in this article; similar names are common on Google Play.
- Enable precise location and allow only the access required for your chosen features.
- Mount the phone securely with an unobstructed view.
- Wait outdoors for a GPS fix before moving.
- Select MPH, KM/H, knots, or another supported unit.
- Test portrait, landscape, HUD, overlay, and alert behavior while parked.
- If background tracking is needed, check battery-optimization settings for that app.
- Confirm that trip history, pause/resume, and export work before relying on the app for records.
Troubleshooting common failures
The speed is zero, stale, or jumping
Move outdoors with a clear view of the sky, confirm precise location, and leave the phone stationary until it gets a fix. Do not trust the reading in a tunnel, garage, or location with a weak signal.
The overlay disappears
Check display-over-other-apps permission, battery optimization, background restrictions, and whether the Accessibility service is still enabled. Some phones suspend apps removed from the recent-apps screen.

Weak GPS, lost fixes, aggressive background suspension, or an interrupted trip can produce incorrect distance. Check whether the app was actually logging continuously rather than merely displaying the last known speed.
The speed-limit warning is wrong
Follow the road sign. Databases may miss temporary limits, school-zone schedules, recent changes, private roads, or rural roads that are poorly mapped.
Do you need a separate app?
If you only want speed visible during navigation, check whether your existing navigation app already provides the speed display or warning behavior you need. If you need a legally authoritative reading, use the vehicle’s built-in instrument. Drivers who need vehicle-derived data, permanent mounting, or specialized reliability may be better served by a dedicated automotive HUD or OBD-II display, while cyclists and boaters may benefit more from purpose-built equipment.
Verdict
For most Android drivers, start with KTW Apps’ GPS Speedometer: Odometer HUD. Velociraptor remains the most directly relevant overlay for Maps or Waze, but its 2020 update and Accessibility requirement make it a deliberate trade-off rather than an automatic recommendation.
