Android Auto is configured mainly from your phone, not from the car’s regular settings menu. On most Android phones, open Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto, or search the Settings app for “Android Auto.”
Some options only appear after the phone has connected to a compatible vehicle, and Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola and other manufacturers may place the menus under slightly different headings. Once you find them, these eight changes can make Android Auto less distracting, quieter and easier to use.

1. Clean up the Android Auto app launcher
Android Auto does not need to display every compatible app installed on your phone. Removing the ones you never use makes the car’s screen quicker to navigate and reduces visual clutter.
Menu path: Android Auto settings → Customize launcher

- Open Customize launcher.
- Uncheck apps you do not want shown.
- Drag the remaining apps into your preferred order.
- Exit and restart Android Auto if the changes do not appear immediately.
You can also select Add a shortcut to the Launcher to create shortcuts for particular contacts or Google Assistant actions. That can be useful for calling home, starting a regular navigation routine or launching a frequently used function without searching through the app grid.
Hiding an app here does not uninstall it, block its phone notifications or prevent it from running in the background. If an app is still producing unwanted alerts, change its Android notification permissions separately.
2. Move navigation closer to the driver
On compatible split-screen layouts, Android Auto lets you choose which part of the interface sits closest to you.

The available choices are generally:
- Navigation closer to driver
- Media closer to driver
Choose Navigation closer to driver if you want the map and route controls within easier reach. Choose the media option if changing audio is more important to you.
This does not put two navigation apps on the display at the same time. It only changes the arrangement of Android Auto’s compatible split-screen interface. The result also depends on the car’s screen size, aspect ratio, orientation and Android Auto version, so the setting may have little visible effect on some vehicles.
3. Stop Android Auto starting on every drive
Android Auto offers a few startup behaviors, although it does not always provide a simple “Never” option.

The usual choices are:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Always | Starts Android Auto whenever the relevant vehicle connection is established. |
| If used on the last drive | Starts it automatically only if Android Auto was used during the previous drive. |
| Default (set by the vehicle) | Lets the car or aftermarket receiver decide how the connection behaves. |
If you want Android Auto to stop taking over as soon as the car connects, try If used on the last drive first. Keep in mind that this is not a universal disable switch. The car’s infotainment system may still initiate a connection.
For stricter control, also review Start Android Auto while locked. Turning that option off can prevent a full Android Auto session from starting while the phone is locked, though Android Auto may still connect after you unlock the phone or launch it manually.
4. Require the phone to be unlocked
If Android Auto appears on the car’s screen before you are ready to use it, change the lock-screen startup setting.
Menu path: Android Auto settings → Start Android Auto while locked

It is particularly useful if you share the car, regularly make short trips or want to prevent passengers from immediately seeing the phone’s Android Auto interface.
Disabling this setting does not disable Bluetooth. Calls and other Bluetooth functions can continue to work, while Android Auto waits for the phone to be unlocked. Depending on the phone and vehicle, an Android Auto is available notification may appear and let you start the session manually.
This setting is also the practical workaround for people looking for a “do not start automatically” control that is absent from some current Android Auto versions.

5. Prevent music and podcasts from playing automatically
Android Auto can ask the last-used media app to resume when the car connects. That is convenient for some drivers and irritating for everyone who gets an unexpected podcast at full volume.

Menu path: Android Auto settings → Start music automatically
On some phones, the option appears inside a Startup or General section. Turn it off to stop Android Auto from requesting automatic playback when the session begins.
That switch is not a guarantee that the stereo will remain silent. Playback can still start when:
- The vehicle sends its own Bluetooth media-resume command.
- The music or podcast app has a separate autoplay or resume setting.
- The car switches to Bluetooth audio before Android Auto finishes connecting.
- The vehicle’s infotainment firmware forces media playback whenever a device connects.
If audio continues, check the car’s Bluetooth/media settings and the autoplay controls inside the specific app. Android Auto may no longer be the part initiating playback.
6. Separate message pop-ups from message sounds
Message alerts are useful when you are expecting an important update, but they can become distracting when several conversations are active.

Turn Show message notifications off to prevent incoming message alerts from appearing on the car display. This is a broad Android Auto control rather than a dependable per-contact privacy filter. Individual messaging apps must also have permission to send notifications on the phone.

Turn Play message chime off. Android Auto may still display the notification or offer to read it aloud, but the arrival sound should be suppressed.
Do Not Disturb can affect calls and messages as well, although Android Auto may apply its own driving-mode behavior. If alerts continue, check both the phone’s Do Not Disturb exceptions and Android Auto’s message settings.

Android Auto’s taskbar can show controls for media and navigation while another app is open. The exact setting name has changed between releases.
Possible menu paths:
- Android Auto settings → Taskbar widgets
- Android Auto settings → Show quick controls for apps
When enabled, the taskbar may show play/pause, skip or navigation information while Maps or another app occupies the main part of the display. When disabled, the taskbar may show more app shortcuts instead.
If you cannot find the option, your phone or Android Auto release may use a different label, or the vehicle may not support the relevant taskbar layout. Android Auto’s dashboard and taskbar behavior has changed across recent updates, and some users have reported missing or unreliable quick controls, especially on displays with a vertical taskbar. Toggling the setting is worth trying, but it cannot overcome every vehicle software limitation.

8. Review Assistant message reading and AI summaries
Android Auto can use Google’s voice features to announce incoming messages. Depending on your software version, related controls may be grouped under messaging or Assistant settings.
Look for:
- Notifications with Assistant
- AI message summaries
Notifications with Assistant controls whether Assistant vocalizes message notifications while you drive. Turn it off if you do not want messages spoken aloud, particularly when other passengers are present.
AI message summaries can condense longer messages rather than reading every word. Google introduced the feature for Android Auto 11.4, with longer messages—reported at around 40 words or more—being the main target. Shorter messages may still be read in full.

Summaries are generated automatically and can be inaccurate. Turn the feature off if exact wording, privacy or reliability matters more than saving a few seconds of listening time. The names and availability of these controls may change as Google moves more in-car voice features from Assistant toward Gemini.
Settings that are often misunderstood
A few popular Android Auto tips need qualification:
- You usually do not need to download Android Auto separately. On current Android phones, it is generally integrated into the operating system.
- Wireless Android Auto does not require a hidden developer switch. Wireless use depends on a compatible phone, car or receiver, plus the correct Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services setup. The developer option is not a universal compatibility upgrade.
- Unknown Sources does not make every Android app safe or usable on the car display. It can expose compatible apps that Android Auto or Google Play would otherwise hide, but arbitrary phone apps are not automatically adapted for driving.
- The automatic-start menu may not contain “Never.” Use If used on the last drive and, when necessary, disable Start Android Auto while locked.
