For a family with four or more children, a three-row SUV is only a good fit if everyone—and the family’s actual car seats or boosters—can ride safely and comfortably in the specific trim being considered. The ten models below are a practical shortlist, not a ranked “best” list: seating layouts, child-seat hardware, cargo room with all rows in use, and model-year safety results differ.
Start by checking whether the exact vehicle has a second-row bench or captain’s chairs, then test every intended restraint in its planned position. A published seven- or eight-passenger capacity does not establish that a particular family’s children and restraints will fit.
How to use this shortlist
The candidate SUVs span midsize and large categories. That distinction matters: a larger vehicle may offer more room, but category or size alone does not establish safety, child-seat compatibility, or usable cargo capacity. No single ranking is appropriate without comparable testing and a defined family-specific criterion.
IIHS explains its evaluation scope this way: “IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.” Review the model-year-specific results rather than assuming every vehicle in a category performs alike. For each SUV, confirm the exact model year and trim, passenger-seat layout, access to the third row, anchor locations, and cargo space when all passenger rows are occupied. The official sources cited below support a shortlist, but do not provide a complete, comparable ten-model table for cargo behind the third row, seat-anchor positions, prices, or fuel economy.
10 three-row SUVs to consider
1. Toyota Sequoia
The 2026 Sequoia seats up to eight with a second-row bench or up to seven with captain’s chairs, according to Toyota. That difference can determine whether a family has enough seating positions, so confirm the layout on the specific trim. Toyota lists 86.9 cubic feet as maximum cargo volume with rear seats folded and maximum towing capacity of 9,500 pounds. Neither figure describes cargo space with all rows occupied; towing capacity is not a measure of passenger or luggage room.
2. Chevrolet Tahoe
The Tahoe is a large-SUV candidate with a model-specific IIHS listing. Its 2026 IIHS evaluation reports three rear seating positions with complete LATCH hardware and three additional positions with tether anchors only. 3. Ford Expedition
The Expedition appears among the large SUVs covered by IIHS’s current category summary. Compare the result for the exact model year under consideration, then inspect the trim’s seat layout and child-seat provisions in its owner’s information. IIHS large-SUV ratings

4. Audi Q7
The Q7 is another model in the large-SUV comparison set. Its presence in the category is a reason to check current model-year ratings, not evidence that it is safer or more suitable for a large family than another candidate. 5. Toyota Highlander

6. Hyundai Palisade
Hyundai describes the 2026 Palisade as seating seven to eight, with an available second-row captain’s-chair layout. Check the exact version because the second-row configuration changes the number of seating positions. Hyundai Palisade
7. Mazda CX-90
The CX-90 is listed in IIHS’s midsize-SUV category. Review the current result for the model year being considered and inspect the chosen trim’s seating layout and restraint-anchor locations. Seat count and second-row layout
Check the exact trim and year. A bench seat and captain’s chairs can change both passenger capacity and how children reach the third row. The Sequoia and Palisade illustrate why a model name alone does not identify the number of seats in a particular vehicle.

Child restraints and access
Make a list of each child’s restraint and the position you plan to use. Consult both manuals for installation requirements and anchor availability. Then install every restraint in the actual vehicle configuration: hardware counts alone do not show whether seats fit side by side, buckle access remains practical, or a child can reach the third row safely.
Cargo with every row in use
Assess the space left behind the third row with all passengers aboard. A maximum cargo figure measured with seats folded cannot answer whether a stroller, school bags, sports equipment, or groceries will fit on a typical trip. Ask for the applicable cargo measurement and confirm it in person; the sources cited here do not establish a comparable behind-third-row figure for all ten vehicles.
Model-year safety ratings
Use the current IIHS category pages and the individual model evaluation where available. IIHS results and award status vary by model and year; do not infer a safety winner from vehicle size or category. NHTSA’s five-star ratings provide information about crash protection and rollover safety beyond federal minimum requirements, and a vehicle marked not rated has not necessarily been tested for every crash condition. Check the exact model year at NHTSA.

A practical fit-check before purchase
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record its model year, trim, and second-row arrangement; do not rely on a listing for a different configuration.
- Bring every restraint. Install each child’s intended seat or booster in the planned seating position, following the vehicle and restraint manuals.
- Check the whole seating plan. Confirm that restraints fit as instructed, buckles can be reached, and children can get to their assigned seats without disturbing another installation.
- Load the everyday gear. With all passenger rows in use, check whether the family’s regular luggage and equipment fit in the remaining cargo area.
- Review current safety information. Look up IIHS and NHTSA results for the exact model year, and distinguish a missing test from a favorable rating.
