Short answer: The most remarkable flying-car programs in 2026 are not all cars. Alef Model A, XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier, and PAL-V Liberty are roadable-aircraft concepts, while EHang EH216-S, Archer Midnight, Joby S4, and Vertical Valo/VX4 are eVTOL aircraft intended mainly for passenger or air-taxi operations.
The technology has moved beyond science-fiction artwork into flight testing, early manufacturing, road approval, and jurisdiction-specific certification. But no program yet represents a universally available vehicle that anyone can drive, park, and fly without additional aviation licensing, infrastructure, and regulatory permission.

Flying cars are real—but they are not all the same kind of machine
The phrase flying car now covers two very different technologies. The first is a genuine roadable aircraft: a vehicle intended to drive on public roads and then fly. The second is an electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, or eVTOL, designed to carry passengers between vertiports as an air taxi. It may look like a car from the ground, but it is not a road vehicle.

1. Alef Model A: the closest visual match to a classic flying car
Alef’s Model A is the most literal interpretation of the flying-car idea in this group. It is designed around a road-going body that can use ordinary streets, fit within normal parking expectations, and then take off vertically to fly over traffic. The company describes a distributed-electric-propulsion architecture rather than a conventional car with a detachable aircraft hidden inside it.
In December 2025, Alef announced that it had begun hand-assembling early Model A Ultralight vehicles in California for controlled real-world testing with initial customers. That is a significant move beyond a computer rendering or a static prototype: the program was entering a stage in which early vehicles could be evaluated in real environments.
Why it is remarkable
Alef is attempting to preserve the visual and practical idea of a car while adding vertical flight. The vehicle does not require the owner to leave a road vehicle behind and switch to a separate aircraft. That makes it the easiest of these seven programs to recognize as a “flying car” in the traditional sense.

Hand assembly and controlled testing do not equal mass production, unrestricted flight approval, or ordinary consumer availability. The cited evidence supports development and testing, not a claim that the Model A is already a broadly approved replacement for a family car. Operating one would still depend on aviation certification, pilot or operator requirements, airspace rules, and suitable takeoff and landing conditions.
2. XPENG AEROHT Land Aircraft Carrier: a detachable flying car
XPENG AEROHT takes a different approach. Its Land Aircraft Carrier separates ground travel from flight. A road vehicle serves as the ground module and carries a detachable electric VTOL aircraft. On the road, the owner uses the conventional-looking ground unit; when flight is appropriate, the airborne module is deployed separately.
This modular architecture is an attempt to avoid making one body perform every job equally well. A road vehicle needs wheels, crash protection, compact dimensions, and road equipment. An aircraft needs lift, propulsion, stability, and a structure optimized for flight. Separating the two could make each module more practical than a single compromise vehicle.
XPENG AEROHT has described the product as oriented toward mass production and has reported thousands of intent orders. It has also presented future delivery targets. Those announcements show demand and a production ambition, but an intent order or presale is not the same as a completed sale, a delivered vehicle, or certified consumer operation.
Why it is remarkable
The Land Aircraft Carrier may be the most commercially understandable personal flying-car concept. Most of the time, the owner can use the road module like a normal vehicle. The aircraft is used only when the route, weather, infrastructure, and regulations make flight worthwhile.
The central trade-off
The detachable design adds complexity. The system needs a reliable way to store, transport, deploy, recharge, inspect, and maintain the aircraft module. It also requires a location where the module can safely transition from road transport to flight. Planned deliveries should therefore be treated as a future target rather than proof that the system is already operating as an everyday consumer product.

3. PAL-V Liberty: a roadable gyroplane
The PAL-V Liberty is not a multicopter and does not attempt to look like a battery-powered air taxi. It combines a road vehicle with a gyroplane-style aircraft. That makes it one of the clearest examples of a design trying to work within both automotive and aviation certification frameworks.
PAL-V reports that the Liberty received European road approval in 2020. In 2025, the company announced that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, or EASA, had issued a No Technical Objection as part of the flight-certification process. In March 2026, the Dutch vehicle authority recognized PAL-V as a certified automotive manufacturer.
PAL-V’s timeline lists first Pioneer Edition deliveries for 2027. That is a company target, not a completed delivery milestone.
Why it is remarkable
The Liberty demonstrates that the flying-car problem does not have to be solved with a cluster of exposed lift rotors. Its gyroplane architecture is closer to a roadable aircraft than to a passenger drone. That may appeal to buyers who want a vehicle they can drive to an approved flight facility and then operate as an aircraft.
Road approval is not flight approval
This distinction is particularly important with the Liberty. A vehicle can be approved for road use without being cleared for flight. The owner would still need the appropriate aviation licence, operating permissions, training, insurance, and an acceptable place to take off and land. “Road legal” does not mean “can fly from any street,” and European road approval does not automatically establish approval in every country.
4. EHang EH216-S: the autonomous passenger eVTOL pioneer
EHang’s EH216-S is not a flying car in the roadable sense. It is a two-seat, pilotless passenger-carrying eVTOL. Its importance comes from its attempt to move autonomous passenger flight from demonstrations toward regulated commercial operations.

In March 2025, EHang reported that operators received air-operator certificates for civil passenger-carrying pilotless aerial vehicles.
Why it is remarkable
Most flying-car publicity focuses on futuristic styling. EHang’s more consequential achievement is regulatory: the program has reported both an aircraft-design approval milestone and operator-level approvals in China. That is closer to an operating aviation system than a vehicle merely completing a promotional flight.
“Pilotless” does not mean universally autonomous
The cited material supports the description of a pilotless aircraft and Chinese regulatory approvals. It does not establish that the EH216-S is authorized to operate autonomously in the United States, Europe, or every other jurisdiction. Nor does a type certificate by itself authorize every operator to begin passenger service. Aircraft production, operator approval, routes, airspace integration, maintenance, and local operating permissions remain separate issues.

5. Archer Midnight: the urban air-taxi workhorse
Archer’s Midnight is designed as a piloted electric air taxi rather than a personal road vehicle. It is intended to carry one pilot and up to four passengers. Archer states that the aircraft can reach up to 150 mph and is optimized for repeated short trips with rapid charging between flights.

The intended use case is straightforward: connect airports, business districts, and nearby cities while avoiding congested roads. That is a different business proposition from selling a flying car to every driver. An operator can keep the aircraft moving on repeatable routes, use dedicated facilities, and spread the cost across multiple passenger journeys.
Archer has reported a UAE certification pathway involving a Restricted Type Certificate program and has targeted passenger-carrying operations in 2026. Those are certification and operating targets, not evidence that unrestricted commercial service is already available worldwide.
Why it is remarkable
Midnight represents the practical, fleet-based side of advanced air mobility. It does not need to be a compromise road vehicle, because it will use aviation infrastructure rather than public streets. Its success depends less on whether an individual can own one and more on whether it can achieve safe, repeatable, economically viable short flights.
What the passenger experience would involve
A commercial Midnight journey would likely be more like taking a short scheduled or on-demand flight than driving a car. Passengers would need to reach a suitable vertiport or aviation facility, follow operator procedures, and accept that weather, airspace, charging, and aircraft availability can affect the trip.

Joby Aviation’s S4-based aircraft is a five-seat electric VTOL designed for one pilot and four passengers. Joby has stated a maximum range of about 150 miles and a cruise speed of up to 200 mph.
The platform emphasizes aircraft-like forward flight after vertical takeoff. That approach is intended to provide more efficient cruise performance and longer range than a compact multicopter that remains in low-speed rotor-borne flight for the entire journey.
In 2026, Joby also reported a turbine-electric VTOL demonstrator derived from the S4 platform. The demonstrator is aimed at longer-range and higher-payload applications, including potential defence uses. It shows how a core eVTOL design can evolve beyond short urban passenger hops, although the demonstrator should not be confused with the standard battery-electric passenger aircraft or with completed commercial certification.
Why it is remarkable
Joby is pursuing the part of the market where an electric aircraft could replace a longer, traffic-heavy ground journey rather than merely provide a novelty flight. Its stated range and speed are notably ambitious for an electric air taxi, while the aircraft’s five-seat configuration gives it a clearer route to shared passenger service than a one- or two-seat personal aircraft.

How to interpret the range figure
The roughly 150-mile figure is a stated aircraft specification, not a guaranteed passenger route length. Actual usable route distance depends on payload, weather, reserves, charging strategy, airspace restrictions, vertiport locations, and the operating rules applied by the relevant aviation authority.
7. Vertical Aerospace Valo / VX4: the larger-cabin electric VTOL
Vertical Aerospace’s current product presentation calls its aircraft Valo, while earlier full-scale development and prototype milestones used the VX4 identity. Keeping those names separate matters: VX4 refers to the earlier development and prototype story, while Valo represents the company’s newer product positioning.
Vertical presents Valo as a six-person electric VTOL aircraft targeting up to 100 miles of range and a 150 mph cruise speed. The company’s certification archive documents earlier full-scale VX4 prototype and piloted-flight milestones.
Why it is remarkable
Valo illustrates the industry’s move from small experimental aircraft toward larger cabins intended for real-world passenger service. A larger aircraft can carry more people per flight, which may make selected air-taxi routes more commercially plausible than a tiny personal aircraft carrying one passenger.

The important caveat
A prototype flight is evidence that an aircraft has flown; it is not evidence that the final product has completed type certification, production approval, or commercial entry into service. Valo’s range and speed figures should therefore be treated as stated targets or specifications, not as proof of an aircraft that is already available for public booking.

Flying-car headlines often compress several different milestones into one phrase. These terms describe different steps:

Which of these is closest to a real flying car?
- Closest to the classic car-with-wings idea: Alef Model A.
- Most interesting modular solution: XPENG AEROHT Land Aircraft Carrier.
- Clearest roadable aircraft pathway: PAL-V Liberty.
- Most advanced cited pilotless passenger milestone: EHang EH216-S, within the Chinese regulatory context described above.
- Most clearly aimed at repeated urban taxi flights: Archer Midnight.
- Most focused on longer-range electric air-taxi performance: Joby S4.
- Most focused on a larger air-taxi cabin: Vertical Valo / VX4.
That list is not a buying guide. For most readers, the air-taxi aircraft are more likely to appear first as a booked service than as a vehicle in a private garage. PAL-V, Alef, and XPENG are pursuing the more literal road-and-air concept, but each still faces the difficult combination of automotive rules, aviation certification, infrastructure, training, and operating restrictions.
Why the universal flying car is still difficult
One vehicle must satisfy two rulebooks
A roadable aircraft must meet requirements associated with both cars and aircraft. Weight, visibility, crash protection, lighting, tires, road dimensions, propulsion, emergency systems, and aircraft safety all compete for space and mass. An air taxi avoids some of that compromise by remaining an aircraft.

Vertical flight needs energy and infrastructure
Vertical takeoff is useful because it reduces dependence on runways, but lifting a vehicle straight upward consumes substantial energy. Electric aircraft also need lightweight batteries, charging facilities, maintenance programs, and reserves for weather or diversion. A vertiport is not simply a parking space with a helipad: it must fit into an approved operating system.

Certification is only one part of deployment
Even after an aircraft design is certified, operators need approvals, trained personnel, maintenance procedures, routes, airspace coordination, and passenger-handling systems. A technically successful aircraft can still be years away from a convenient public service.
The business case favours shared aircraft
A roadable flying car has to carry its road hardware even when it is flying and its aircraft hardware even when it is driving. An air-taxi operator can optimize each aircraft for flight and use it repeatedly. That is why Archer, Joby, and Vertical are pursuing fleets and passenger routes rather than personal ownership alone.
The bottom line for car enthusiasts
The flying-car future is not arriving as one universal machine that everyone parks in a driveway and flies to work. It is emerging as a family of solutions: roadable gyroplanes, modular car-and-aircraft systems, pilotless passenger eVTOLs, and piloted air taxis operating from dedicated infrastructure.
The remarkable development is not that every promise has already been fulfilled.
