Fisker’s North American EV sale was a bankruptcy liquidation, not a company rescue. On July 17, 2024, a Delaware court approved the sale of approximately 3,321 Fisker Ocean SUVs to American Lease LLC for a maximum of $46.25 million, with pricing determined by vehicle condition and other sale tiers.
Fisker was not rescued or sold as a going concern. On July 17, 2024, the Delaware bankruptcy court approved Fisker’s sale of a large North American inventory of Ocean electric SUVs to American Lease LLC. The order authorized a maximum purchase price of $46.25 million, but that figure was a ceiling under a tiered pricing structure—not a guaranteed payment for every vehicle or a uniform per-SUV price.

The transaction was part of Fisker’s Chapter 11 liquidation. It involved approximately 3,321 Ocean vehicles listed in the company’s petition-date inventory, with the actual economics dependent on vehicle condition, title status, repairs, stop-sale issues, and other sale criteria. It also left a difficult technical problem: the vehicles needed recall work, parts, service access, software, and connected-cloud infrastructure to be useful in the real world.
Fisker Ocean sale: the key facts
| Question | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| What was sold? | A large inventory of Fisker Ocean electric SUVs held by the bankruptcy estate, not the operating company itself. |
| How many vehicles? | Approximately 3,321 vehicles were identified in Fisker’s petition-date inventory. The number does not mean every vehicle necessarily received the same treatment or price. |
| Who was the buyer? | American Lease LLC. |
| When was the sale approved? | July 17, 2024, by the United States Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. |
| What was the price? | Up to $46.25 million, subject to multiple pricing tiers and vehicle-specific conditions. |
| What kind of transaction was it? | A bankruptcy liquidation sale approved free and clear of liens, claims, encumbrances, and other interests. |
What American Lease actually acquired
The sale order covered physical Ocean vehicles that Fisker’s estate was trying to monetize during bankruptcy. It did not transfer Fisker’s entire business to American Lease, and it did not restart Fisker as a vehicle manufacturer.

Contemporaneous reporting described American Lease as a vehicle-leasing company serving Uber and Lyft drivers in the New York market. That use case helps explain why a fleet buyer might consider a large batch of otherwise difficult-to-sell electric SUVs: a leasing operation can evaluate vehicles in bulk, manage deployment centrally, and plan service around a defined operating market.
However, the buyer was not simply purchasing ordinary used-car inventory. The Ocean is a connected vehicle whose features, diagnostics, updates, and owner-facing functions depend partly on software and online services. The court record also dealt with recalls, stop-sale restrictions, repair planning, parts, technician training, and access to service providers.
Why $46.25 million was a maximum, not a guaranteed payout
The most important qualification in the headline is up to. Court materials described multiple pricing tiers rather than one fixed price for all 3,321 vehicles. The tiers reflected differences such as:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Overall vehicle condition
- Title status and the documentation attached to a vehicle
- Required repairs
- Recall and stop-sale status
- Other criteria used to determine whether a vehicle was ready for sale or deployment
That means it would be inaccurate to say that Fisker sold every North American EV for $46.25 million, or that American Lease paid the same amount per vehicle. Even dividing the maximum by the approximate inventory count would produce only a theoretical ceiling of roughly $13,927 per vehicle; it would not establish an actual average, because the deal was tiered and the final eligible vehicle count and condition mix mattered.
The order’s approval also should not be confused with proof that the estate received a single unconditional cash payment on the approval date. The legally accurate description is that the court authorized a bulk sale with a maximum purchase price and conditions governing the vehicles.
How the deal fits Fisker’s bankruptcy timeline
- June 2024: Fisker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware and began pursuing a liquidation strategy for its assets.
- Early July 2024: Fisker sought approval to sell a large North American Ocean inventory to American Lease. The court materials identified approximately 3,321 vehicles and a maximum price of $46.25 million.
- July 17, 2024: The bankruptcy court entered the order approving the sale free and clear of liens, claims, encumbrances, and other interests.
- After approval: The transaction remained tied to vehicle condition, recall repairs, stop-sale requirements, parts, service access, software, and cloud support.
- October 2024: Fisker’s liquidation-plan process included further arrangements and negotiations involving the technology and cloud services needed to preserve vehicle operability and owner access.
This chronology matters because the sale was one step in winding down Fisker’s assets, not an announcement that the company had found new capital or a manufacturing partner.
The recall and stop-sale problem
A vehicle can have a sale price on paper and still be difficult to operate. Court materials stated that purchased vehicles could not be operated until specified stop-sale issues were cleared. The record also discussed recall-related repair plans, parts, training, and access to providers capable of working on the Ocean.

A stop-sale issue is therefore not a minor paperwork detail for a fleet buyer. It can affect whether a vehicle may be delivered, leased, driven, or placed into service until the required condition is corrected. A recall may require a particular repair, replacement part, software action, or inspection. The exact remedy depends on the issue and the individual vehicle.

That helps explain why a bulk transaction needed more than a vehicle-count spreadsheet. American Lease needed a workable path for identifying affected vehicles, obtaining parts, arranging repairs, accessing trained service personnel, and determining when each Ocean could legally and practically enter service.
Why software and cloud access were part of the bankruptcy negotiations
The Ocean’s physical hardware was only part of what made the vehicle usable. Fisker vehicles depend on software and connected services for portions of their functionality, diagnostics, updates, and owner-facing features. A buyer could not assume that purchasing the metal, battery, motors, and interior automatically transferred every digital service required to support them.
For that reason, American Lease and other parties negotiated over access to Fisker’s software and cloud infrastructure during the bankruptcy process. The confirmed liquidation-plan process included arrangements intended to preserve access to vehicle technology and connected services rather than leaving the buyer with vehicles separated from the software environment on which some functions depend.

What the sale means for existing Fisker Ocean owners
Existing owners were not the direct beneficiaries of the bulk inventory sale. The transaction concerned unsold or sale-eligible vehicles held by Fisker’s bankruptcy estate. It did not convert privately owned Oceans into American Lease vehicles or remove the service risks faced by people who already own one.
Owners remained exposed to several separate questions:
- Recalls and stop-sale actions: Whether a vehicle has an outstanding campaign or restriction, and whether the required remedy is available.
- Parts: Whether the needed component is in stock, can be sourced, and is compatible with the vehicle.
- Qualified labor: Whether a provider has the tools, training, information, and authorization needed for the repair.
- Software and cloud infrastructure: Whether the online systems needed for diagnostics, updates, remote functions, or other features continue to operate.
- 12-volt and routine maintenance: Whether ordinary consumables and service items can be obtained even when a larger manufacturer support network is no longer operating normally.
The practical lesson is that a court-approved fleet sale may help place some vehicles into a managed operation without solving every problem for private owners. Fleet support arrangements and individual-owner access are related, but they are not automatically identical.

What owners may still need
The official Ocean owner guide treats floor mats, the 12-volt battery, parts and accessories, vehicle care, and other service topics as normal ownership concerns. For cabin protection, Fisker Ocean floor mats are a reasonable model-specific accessory to research. LinerX publicly lists floor mats for the 2023 Fisker Ocean, but current Amazon availability, pricing, stock, fitment, and affiliate eligibility were not independently verified for this article. Check the model year, trim, retention points, coverage, and return policy before ordering; do not assume that a trim-to-fit mat or a listing for another EV will fit the Ocean safely.

The key fob is a more narrowly specified item. Fisker’s instructions identify a CR2032 coin-cell battery and tell owners to use an identical specified battery. Follow the key-fob instructions and confirm the marking on the replacement cell. This is a specification-based consumable recommendation, not an endorsement of any particular battery brand.
The owner guide identifies the Ocean’s 12-volt battery as a service area, but the available research does not establish one universal replacement specification for every Ocean. Owners should not choose a battery solely because it has the same physical size or because an online listing claims broad EV compatibility. Confirm the vehicle-specific requirements with qualified service support first.
Home charging equipment is also relevant to Ocean ownership, but it is peripheral to this bankruptcy-sale story. Charging hardware should be evaluated in a broader ownership guide that covers the vehicle’s charging requirements, electrical installation, and current support conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA sensible post-bankruptcy ownership checklist
- Document the vehicle: Keep the VIN, title, purchase records, service history, warning messages, and photos of any visible condition issue together.
- Check for open campaigns: Use the most current official or qualified service channel available for the vehicle’s recall and stop-sale status.
- Ask before authorizing work: Confirm that the provider can access the required parts, diagnostic tools, repair instructions, software procedures, and any necessary cloud systems.
- Do not ignore a stop-sale instruction: If a vehicle is subject to a restriction, obtain clarification about whether it may be driven and what must happen before it returns to service.
- Separate physical and digital problems: A vehicle may be mechanically repairable while still facing a software or connectivity dependency. Ask what functions will work after the repair and what remains uncertain.
- Use model-specific accessories: For floor mats and other interior items, verify Ocean fitment rather than relying on a generic EV description.
- Plan for routine consumables: The CR2032 key-fob battery is specified in the owner instructions. Treat the 12-volt battery as a vehicle-specific service decision, not a generic shopping item.
Owners who need an independent Fisker Ocean service provider should ask detailed questions before handing over the vehicle: Does the shop currently work on the Ocean? Can it perform the relevant recall or diagnostic procedure? Can it obtain the necessary parts? Does it have a documented way to handle software and connected-service dependencies? No specific current affiliate repair program or universal nationwide service network was verified here.
What free and clear means—and what it does not mean
The sale order authorized the estate to transfer the vehicles free and clear of liens, claims, encumbrances, and other interests. In bankruptcy terms, that is designed to make the assets transferable to the buyer without the listed interests following the assets in the ordinary way contemplated by the order.
It does not mean that every Ocean had a clean operational record. It does not mean recalls disappeared, parts became plentiful, software support became permanent, or existing owners received a new service guarantee. Legal title treatment and practical vehicle support are separate issues.

A precise version of the headline would be: Fisker received court approval on July 17, 2024, to pursue a tiered bulk sale of approximately 3,321 North American Ocean SUVs to American Lease for a maximum purchase price of $46.25 million as part of Fisker’s bankruptcy liquidation.
That wording preserves the important facts. It identifies the Ocean rather than implying that Fisker sold every type of EV it had made; it says maximum rather than guaranteed final proceeds; and it describes a liquidation sale rather than a corporate rescue.

For the buyer, the opportunity was access to a large fleet inventory. For Fisker’s estate, the transaction was a way to monetize vehicles quickly. For owners and prospective buyers, the lasting question was—and remains—the support ecosystem around those vehicles: recalls, parts, qualified repairs, software, and cloud services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Fisker receive exactly $46.25 million for every North American EV?
No. The $46.25 million was the maximum purchase price authorized by the bankruptcy court. Court materials described multiple pricing tiers based on condition, title status, repairs, stop-sale issues, and other criteria, so it was not a guaranteed uniform payment for every vehicle.
Did American Lease buy Fisker as a company?
No. The buyer acquired a large inventory of Ocean SUVs from the bankruptcy estate. The transaction did not transfer Fisker’s entire operating business or revive Fisker as a manufacturer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Did the fleet sale solve support problems for existing Fisker Ocean owners?
No. The sale involved unsold or sale-eligible vehicles held by the bankruptcy estate. Existing owners remained responsible for navigating their own recall, parts, repair, software, and connected-service issues.
Can Fisker Ocean owners assume that cloud services and repairs are still available?
Not necessarily. The court record and later plan process addressed access to software and cloud infrastructure, but service arrangements can change. Owners should verify current connectivity, recall processing, parts availability, and repair support before relying on any particular feature or provider.
What battery does the Fisker Ocean key fob use?
The owner instructions specify a CR2032 coin-cell battery and say to use an identical specified battery. Confirm the marking and follow the vehicle’s instructions. This does not endorse a particular battery brand.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Fisker was cleared on July 17, 2024, to sell approximately 3,321 North American Ocean SUVs to American Lease for up to $46.25 million. The amount was a condition-dependent ceiling in a bankruptcy liquidation, not a uniform price for every vehicle and not evidence that Fisker itself had been revived.
