But there is no universal sedan advantage: efficiency, safety, cost, and practicality vary by model, powertrain, and your needs. These seven reasons show where a sedan may make more sense—and what to check before deciding.
1. Sedans can deliver better fuel economy
For model-year 2024, new sedan/wagons averaged 33.5 mpg, compared with 31.7 mpg for car SUVs and 25.7 mpg for truck SUVs, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 Automotive Trends report. The EPA reported a 27.2 mpg average across all new vehicles that year. These are category averages, not estimates for a specific car; engine, hybrid or electric powertrain, and vehicle design all matter. See the EPA report’s highlights.
“SUV” does not map to one EPA category. The report separates car SUVs from truck SUVs using regulatory classifications. Under NHTSA definitions, 34% of model-year 2024 new vehicles were cars and 66% were trucks; “truck” here is a regulatory classification, not a synonym for pickup. Compare EPA figures for the exact model year and powertrain rather than assuming every sedan beats every SUV.
2. A sedan’s lower, smaller form may suit your daily driving
If you prefer a lower seating position or want a vehicle with a smaller overall form, a sedan is worth considering. Whether that makes a real difference depends on the vehicles you are comparing and your own comfort getting in, sitting, and getting out. Test the specific models, including visibility and seat adjustment, instead of treating body style as a guarantee.

3. It may be easier to fit into your parking routine
A sedan may work better for a garage, narrow parking space, or regular street-parking route if its dimensions suit those constraints. “Sedan” alone does not tell you whether a car will fit: check the candidate vehicle’s length and width, then measure your parking space and allow room to open doors and move around it.
4. An efficient sedan may cut fuel spending
Fuel economy can translate into lower fuel use when you drive similar distances, but the savings depend on the particular vehicles, fuel or electricity prices, and your driving. Compare EPA estimates for the same model year and relevant powertrains, then apply them to your usual mileage and local energy costs. A sedan’s body style by itself cannot establish what you will save.

5. Sedans give you more models to consider than one narrow definition suggests
The EPA’s sedan/wagon category and its separate car-SUV and truck-SUV categories are useful reminders that labels cover different kinds of vehicles. Compare the models and powertrains that actually meet your needs; do not treat a category average as a prediction for every vehicle in it. 6. A sedan may provide enough room for your household
You may not need an SUV’s particular layout or capacity for your passengers and regular cargo. But the sources do not establish a universal cargo or passenger-space advantage for either body style. Check the exact vehicles in person: try the seats, load the items you carry, and consider how often you need to transport bulky cargo or use particular access features.

7. Choosing a smaller vehicle can matter to people outside it
Vehicle size and weight affect crash forces, but “bigger is safer” is an incomplete rule. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says heavier vehicles can have an advantage in collisions with lighter vehicles, while additional weight brings diminishing occupant-safety benefits above the fleet average. IIHS also notes that large front ends pose greater risks to pedestrians and bicyclists. It states that “Fuel economy can be improved without sacrificing safety”—a point about vehicle technology and design, not proof that any sedan is safer than any SUV. How to compare a sedan and an SUV fairly
- Match the vehicles. Compare similar model years and, where possible, similar powertrains and equipment.
- Check efficiency. Use EPA estimates for each candidate rather than relying on body-style averages.
- Review safety by model year. Look up each vehicle’s IIHS crashworthiness and crash avoidance/mitigation ratings. Coverage and ratings can differ between model years. Search IIHS vehicle ratings.
- Test your real-life fit. Check passenger comfort, cargo needs, entry and exit, visibility, and whether the vehicle fits your parking space.
- Calculate your own costs. Compare purchase offers, insurance quotes, financing, fuel or charging, and maintenance for the specific vehicles and your location. The cited sources do not establish a universal sedan advantage in purchase price, insurance, or maintenance.
When an SUV may be the better choice
If a particular SUV better accommodates your passengers, cargo, access needs, or regular driving conditions, that practical fit may outweigh a sedan’s potential efficiency or footprint advantages. Make the decision between specific vehicles, not an assumed winner based on body style alone.
