The Volvo XC60, 240, 740/940, 850, V70, XC70 and S60 make a useful shortlist of models with strong reliability credentials—but no single study proves an all-time winner. This ranking is an editorial synthesis of available complaint-rate data, longevity reputation and model history, not a controlled comparison of every generation. A dependable model name cannot guarantee that a particular used car is sound.
How this Volvo reliability ranking works
The evidence is uneven. Volvo’s historical material helps explain the 240’s production longevity and the 850’s engineering changes, while current third-party sources offer complaint-rate comparisons for selected models and a composite ranking for the XC60. None measures every Volvo generation using one consistent long-term failure rate.
ForCar aggregates NHTSA owner complaints and reports rates per production run; complaints are reports, not inspected failures or the probability that a car will break. Its 2026 page update lists 5,531 complaints across 2,455 production runs for Volvo overall, or 2.25 complaints per run against its market baseline of 3.73. Reporting behavior, model-year coverage and production volumes affect these figures. iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking is a different measure: its 7.9/10 XC60 reliability score comes from a composite methodology analyzing more than 12 million cars for longevity and value retention and using NHTSA safety data. It is not an all-generation lifetime failure score.
The order below balances those limited quantitative signals with historical context and reputation. Older models have less comparable data, so their placements are more qualitative. Within any entry, year, engine, transmission, maintenance and condition can matter more than the badge.

1. Volvo XC60
The XC60 leads this list because it has the clearest current comparative support: iSeeCars ranks it highest among Volvo models in its displayed 2026 ranking, with a 7.9/10 reliability score. That score belongs to the ranking’s evaluated vehicles and composite method; it should not be read as proof that every XC60 generation is equally dependable.
ForCar’s NHTSA-derived complaint-rate page reports 1.1 complaints per production run for the V60, not the XC60. Its listed XC90 rate is 2.95; these figures illustrate why one model’s result should not be transferred to another in the same brand family. Check the exact XC60 year and powertrain rather than relying on the nameplate-wide ranking.
2. Volvo 240
The 240 earns its place through a long production history and a durable-car reputation, not through a modern comparative reliability score. Volvo says production ended in 1993 after 19 years and more than 2.8 million cars. Those figures show the model’s scale and longevity as a product; they do not establish a failure rate.
A 1979 Road & Track owner survey preserves the period reputation in individual comments. A 245 wagon owner from Illinois described it as a vehicle that “feels like it will run forever,” while a 242 owner from Colorado wrote, “Best auto built—would never own anything else.” These are anonymous owner opinions from that survey, not statistical findings.

- [Replacement Suggestion]: To ensure that the engine air filter provides your engine with clean air, recommended replacement every 12 months, 12,000 miles or as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
For a 240 today, age and upkeep dominate the decision. Inspect for rust and deferred maintenance, review records, and match repair information to the car’s year and configuration. Parts and specialist access can also affect whether a sound example is practical to keep.
3. Volvo 740/940
The 740 and 940 are included as classic, durability-oriented choices, but the available evidence does not establish a comparable all-time score for either. Their position is therefore based more on reputation and their place in Volvo’s older lineup than on a normalized failure measure. Do not interpret the pairing as proof that every year or configuration shares the same risk profile.
ForCar and RepairSurge display NHTSA complaint records for these models, but raw counts alone are not a fair reliability ranking: a long-covered or widely represented model can collect more reports. For an individual car, prioritize condition, service history and a specialist inspection over a headline reputation.
4. Volvo 850
The 850 matters because it marked a substantial engineering transition, not because its history alone proves it is more or less reliable. Volvo’s retrospective describes a transverse five-cylinder engine with an integrated front-wheel-drive transmission, delta-link rear suspension and SIPS side-impact protection; it also says the 850 became the basis for most Volvo models of the decade. That is a reason to distinguish its generation and systems from earlier rear-drive cars, not to assume shared reliability across the range.

- Complete Remote Key Fob: The package includes battery, uncut blade, 4A chip and circuit board, it will function is same as your original one, just ready to program
Third-party complaint explorers list 850 records, but the available material does not provide a consistently normalized, all-generation comparison that can establish its standing against the other models here. A buyer should assess the exact car and its maintenance rather than treating the 850’s pivotal design as a reliability verdict.
5. Volvo V70
The V70 has one of the more favorable complaint-rate figures among the listed later models: ForCar reports 2.01 complaints per production run on its 2026-updated aggregation of NHTSA records. That is a comparative signal within the page’s coverage, not a probability of failure or a guarantee for a given model year.
The V70’s exact generation and drivetrain still matter. Confirm service history and have a qualified Volvo specialist inspect the engine, transmission and drivetrain on the particular car. Complaint rates cannot reveal whether that vehicle has been maintained or repaired well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Volvo XC70
ForCar reports 2.29 complaints per production run for the XC70, placing it between the V70 and S60 in the listed figures. The rate is based on aggregated NHTSA complaints and available model-year coverage; it is not the same as a workshop inspection or a controlled test.

Because the XC70 is a distinct model from the V70, do not apply one model’s complaint rate to the other. Evaluate the exact year, engine and drivetrain, and look for records that show routine work and repairs were completed.
7. Volvo S60
ForCar lists the S60 at 2.6 complaints per production run. That rate is higher than the V70 and XC70 figures on the same page, but it remains a reported-complaint measure rather than a definitive reliability score. It also should not be combined with iSeeCars’ XC60 composite rating, which uses different inputs and a different method.
The S60 rounds out this ranking as a model with a usable comparative signal, not as a claim that every S60 is less dependable than every wagon or SUV listed above it. Verify the model year and powertrain and judge the individual car on records, inspection and recall status.
What the complaint numbers can—and cannot—tell you
ForCar’s listed complaint rates vary across Volvo models: V60 1.1 complaints per production run, V70 2.01, XC70 2.29, S60 2.6, XC90 2.95 and S80 3.09. The V60 figure is not an XC60 figure. Because these are NHTSA owner-complaint aggregations with differing model-year coverage, they help compare reported records within that source but do not establish an individual car’s odds of a breakdown.
RepairSurge also displays complaint totals for Volvo models including the XC90, S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC60, 850, 940, 740 and 240. Since its page ranks total records, counts can reflect how many vehicles and years are represented; a higher total alone does not mean a model is less reliable. The complaint sources are secondary aggregations of NHTSA records, not independent mechanical inspections.
How to choose a reliable used Volvo
- Identify the exact car. Confirm model year, engine, transmission and drivetrain; broad model reputations can conceal generation and powertrain differences.
- Check recall status by VIN. Use Volvo Cars’ U.S. recall information page. Volvo says that for recalls before August 1999, buyers should contact Customer Care or call 1-800-458-1552 for possible additional information. Recall information is market- and VIN-specific.
- Review maintenance records. Look for a documented service history and evidence that deferred repairs were addressed. A model ranking cannot substitute for records on the car being considered.
- Arrange a specialist inspection. Ask a qualified Volvo specialist to assess the exact engine, transmission and drivetrain, and inspect for rust and other signs of neglect.
- Consider ownership support. For older models, confirm that parts, repair information and local expertise are available for the year and configuration you intend to buy.
Volvo says it follows vehicles of all model years through its quality systems and retailer network to assess how real-world driving affects cars and components. That company statement describes its follow-up approach; it does not replace a VIN recall check or an inspection of a used vehicle.
