Reliable lubrication starts with the machine’s manual, not a one-size-fits-all grease or a fixed number of grease-gun strokes. Use these seven shop practices to apply the specified lubricant cleanly, avoid over-greasing, and keep service records that make routine maintenance easier to repeat.
1. Start with the operator’s manual
For each machine and component, check the manual for the lubricant specification, quantity, service interval, and any pressure restrictions. Oil and grease are not interchangeable simply because they carry a familiar label: manufacturers select lubricants to meet the needs of a particular system. Case IH likewise directs owners to model-specific manuals for lubrication points and intervals in its greasing tips.
If the manual is unavailable, identify the exact model and component before choosing a product or service amount. Purdue University Extension explains that grease selection depends on equipment requirements and operating conditions in Choosing and Applying Lubricating Grease. When a product change or grease compatibility is uncertain, ask the equipment or lubricant manufacturer rather than mixing products on guesswork.
2. Make a lubrication map and service log
Turn the manual’s lubrication diagram into a shop-ready checklist. Photograph or copy the diagram, number or highlight each fitting, and mark each point as you service it. This is especially useful for hidden or awkwardly placed fittings that are easy to miss.

For each service, record the date, machine hours, grease type, and completed points. Case IH recommends using model-specific lubrication information and tracking maintenance; a simple log helps identify missed points and makes it easier to maintain a consistent schedule.
3. Clean each fitting before attaching the gun
Wipe dirt and debris from the zerk with a clean rag or shop towel before coupling the grease gun. A fitting opens into a passage toward the bearing, so pushing grit inside can contribute to wear rather than protect the component. Keep the gun’s coupler clean, too, and avoid setting it down where it can pick up shop dirt.

4. Match the amount to the component
Use the manual’s specified amount and interval. There is no universal stroke count: gun output and component requirements vary, and different parts tolerate different amounts.
Pins and bushings
Some limited-motion pins or bushings are serviced until fresh grease appears at an outlet or joint. If the manual calls for purging, wipe away the excess after lubrication.

Rotating bearings
Do not apply the same “grease until it comes out” rule to every bearing. Purdue’s guidance distinguishes limited-motion bushings from rotating bearings: indiscriminate overfilling of an unsealed rotating bearing can churn grease, generate heat, or damage a seal. Follow the component-specific instructions in the machine manual.
5. Keep grease guns clean, primed, and identifiable
Wipe the gun before loading a cartridge and prime it correctly after installation so it dispenses grease reliably. If the shop uses more than one grease, label or color-code each gun and keep it assigned to the intended product. That reduces the chance of an unintended grease mix. Consult the equipment or grease manufacturer before switching products when compatibility is not established.

A hand grease gun with a flexible extension hose can help reach difficult fittings and keep the operator farther from moving parts, as Case IH notes in its equipment greasing guidance. An extension is not permission to work around moving machinery: shut down or secure equipment as its manual directs before servicing it.

- Keep lubricant containers and dispensing equipment clean and closed when not in use.
- Clean around a filler cap before opening it, so dirt does not fall into the reservoir.
- Store grease cartridges upright when their packaging directs, and follow the manufacturer’s storage and shelf-life instructions.
- Release grease-gun pressure during storage to reduce the chance of oil separation, as advised by the National Lubricating Grease Institute.

7. Give used oil a labeled, separate home
Collect used oil in a sound, leak-proof, labeled container and keep it separate from solvents and other substances. Prevent spills and use an appropriate recycling route; do not pour used oil onto the ground or into a drain. The US EPA’s business guidance on managing used oil describes federal requirements, but state rules may be stricter. Farm storage and spill obligations also depend on the operation; consult the EPA’s farm SPCC fact sheet and check applicable state and local requirements. Seek qualified assistance if you are unsure how rules apply or how to handle a spill.
When automatic lubrication may make sense
Automatic lubrication is an optional solution for compatible equipment, not a universal requirement.
