Si estás junto al tráfico, en una pendiente o sobre suelo inestable, no lo intentes: pide asistencia. En esta guía, «llanta» se refiere a la rueda; el neumático es la cubierta de caucho.
Antes de empezar: ¿es seguro cambiar la llanta aquí?
La seguridad del lugar importa más que terminar el cambio. Reduce la velocidad con cuidado y detente en un sitio firme, nivelado y lo más alejado posible del flujo de vehículos. Enciende las luces de emergencia, aplica el freno de estacionamiento y apaga el motor. Si el arcén es estrecho, hay poca visibilidad o los vehículos pasan cerca, permanece en un lugar protegido y solicita asistencia en carretera; Michelin también recomienda pedir ayuda cuando el cambio no pueda hacerse con seguridad: guía de Michelin para cambiar un neumático.
Qué necesitas y qué debes comprobar
Busca en el manual del propietario la ubicación y las instrucciones de uso del gato, la llave y el repuesto, además del punto de elevación, el torque de las tuercas y cualquier restricción del repuesto. No presupongas que la ubicación de las herramientas, el procedimiento o las especificaciones son iguales en todos los autos. Si necesitas equipo adicional, la llave debe ajustarse a las tuercas del vehículo; el gato debe ser compatible con el vehículo y con sus puntos de elevación.
- Repuesto adecuado para el vehículo.
- Gato y llave indicados o compatibles con el auto.
- Manual del propietario para identificar el punto de apoyo y las especificaciones.
- Si el lugar o el equipo no permiten trabajar de forma segura, asistencia profesional.
Cómo cambiar una llanta en 7 pasos
1. Asegura el vehículo
Detente en terreno firme y nivelado, lejos del tráfico; activa las luces de emergencia, aplica el freno de estacionamiento y apaga el motor. Si el sitio no es seguro, no continúes con el cambio.

2. Prepara el auto y las herramientas
Consulta el manual para encontrar el repuesto, el gato, la llave y los puntos de elevación. Sigue las instrucciones específicas del modelo. Por ejemplo, el manual Ford consultado indica seleccionar Park en vehículos automáticos y bloquear la rueda diagonalmente opuesta; no asumas que esas instrucciones se aplican a todos los autos.
3. Afloja las tuercas antes de elevarlo
Si corresponde, retira el tapacubos. Afloja las tuercas mientras la rueda todavía toca el suelo, pero no las quites todavía. El manual del vehículo puede indicar detalles distintos para tu modelo.

4. Coloca el gato y eleva el vehículo
Coloca el gato únicamente en el punto señalado por el fabricante y sobre una superficie firme y nivelada. Eleva el vehículo lo necesario para que la rueda quede libre. Nunca te metas debajo de un vehículo sostenido solo por un gato: esa advertencia también aparece en el manual de Jeep alojado por NHTSA. No hagas funcionar el motor mientras el vehículo está elevado.
5. Retira la rueda pinchada
Quita las tuercas y extrae la rueda con cuidado. Sigue las indicaciones del manual sobre ocupantes y carga: algunos modelos pueden exigir que el vehículo esté vacío antes de elevarlo.

6. Instala el repuesto
Alinea los orificios de la rueda con los pernos, coloca las tuercas y apriétalas gradualmente en una secuencia alternada. Usa el torque especificado para tu vehículo; no hay un valor universal que sirva para todos los autos. Michelin recomienda comprobar el apriete con el torque correcto.
7. Baja el vehículo y verifica el repuesto
Baja el vehículo según las instrucciones del fabricante y termina de comprobar el apriete como indique el manual. Guarda las herramientas y revisa la presión del repuesto. Antes de circular, confirma en el propio repuesto y en el manual si hay límites de velocidad o distancia. Si es temporal, úsalo solo según esas restricciones y dirígete con cuidado a un servicio de neumáticos.

Después del cambio: presión y mantenimiento
La presión correcta es la que recomienda el fabricante para el vehículo o especifica para el repuesto; no la deduzcas de una cifra genérica. NHTSA aconseja revisar mensualmente la presión y comprobarla con los neumáticos fríos, además de incluir el repuesto en la revisión: consejos de NHTSA sobre neumáticos. Su guía considera fríos los neumáticos cuando el vehículo no se ha conducido durante al menos tres horas: consejos de NHTSA para viajar.
Michelin estima que cambiar un neumático al costado de la carretera toma alrededor de 20 minutos si se ha practicado antes. Es una estimación editorial, no una garantía para cada conductor o vehículo. Si no conoces el procedimiento, te falta una herramienta o las condiciones no son seguras, prioriza la asistencia antes que completar el cambio por tu cuenta.
