The 1936 Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, chassis 57374, won the 2017 Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award. The result was announced in Paris on 8 February 2018. The car qualified after winning Best of Show Concours d’Etat at the 2017 Chantilly Arts & Elegance. Its often-cited $40 million price refers to a reported 2010 private sale, not a publicly verified auction result or a current valuation.
Which Bugatti won the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award?
The winner was chassis 57374, a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. The Peninsula Classics described it as the first Type 57 Atlantic produced and the only surviving example of the “Aéro Coupé.” It earned a place in the award field by winning Best of Show Concours d’Etat at Chantilly Arts & Elegance in 2017.
The Peninsula Classics is a classic-car award, not a race: it brought together eight best-of-show winners from international concours. The organizer said the contenders were reviewed by 24 automotive experts, designers and notable celebrities. The Atlantic was named the 2017 winner at The Peninsula Paris on 8 February 2018. Was the Bugatti Atlantic really sold for $40 million?
New Atlas reported that chassis 57374 sold privately to Rob Walton in 2010 for $40 million. That figure is reported, not confirmed by a public transaction record or the award organizer, and it should not be presented as a current market price. New Atlas also reported that the car sold at auction for $59,000 in 1971; that historical figure likewise does not establish its value today. New Atlas’s 2018 account is the source for both reported amounts.

How many Type 57 SC Atlantics were made?
Bugatti says four Type 57 SC Atlantics were built between 1936 and 1938. The Peninsula Classics’ 2018 account said three survived at that time. These are distinct claims: the production total comes from Bugatti, while the survivor count is the award organizer’s account. Bugatti’s model history gives the production period and count.
What makes the Atlantic’s design distinctive?
Jean Bugatti designed the Atlantic, whose prominent raised seam along the body recalls the 1935 Aérolithe concept. The concept’s magnesium-alloy panels raised concerns about welding; the production Atlantic used aluminum, but retained the seam as a defining visual feature. The seam should not be explained as a production necessity caused by an inability to weld its body material. The Peninsula Classics and Bugatti describe the design’s connection to the Aérolithe in their award account and model history.

What is known about chassis 57374’s history?
The award account and the Mullin Automotive Museum’s history say chassis 57374 was delivered new to Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, the third Baron Rothschild. The museum records delivery in England on 2 September 1936 and lists Peter and Merle Mullin and Rob and Melani Walton among later caretakers. This is historical provenance, not a current ownership or title search. The museum’s Atlantic history provides its account of the car’s provenance.
The available chronology puts the car’s reported 1971 auction sale before the reported 2010 private sale, its Chantilly win in 2017, and its Peninsula award announcement in 2018. Those reported prices are historical events, not evidence of a present-day appraisal.
