To reduce stubble damage to farm tires, limit how often stiff stalks contact the tread and sidewalls: deflect stalks before tires reach them, follow the right tire setup and pressure, and adjust field traffic where practical. No tire or single practice eliminates the risk, so treat these measures as risk reduction—not a guarantee.
1. Deflect stalks before tires reach them
Stalk stompers, rollers, and other deflectors are the most direct way to reduce tire contact. Mounted on a corn head, platform, tractor, or another compatible implement, they push stalks down or out of the tire path. Options include commercially made and custom devices; ask an equipment or tire dealer to confirm fit for your machine and operation.
Blaine Cox of Yokohama Off-Highway Tires America, Inc., told Successful Farming in 2023: “The cost of a set of those shoes or sleds to mash down residue is less than the cost of replacing a set of premium farm tires,” That is a representative’s comparison, not a universal cost analysis. When comparing a deflector with the cost of tire replacement, also account for installation, compatibility, likely downtime, and how much tire exposure it can actually reduce.
2. Consider tire-installation timing
Successful Farming relayed Firestone representative Brad Harris’s recommendation to install new tires after planting or harvest when practical. The explanation is that processing waxes can migrate to the tire surface over time. Harris said this may harden a tire by 1 or 2 durometer points; it is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed change for every tire or operating condition.

3. Compare compounds without sacrificing tire performance
Manufacturers continue to refine rubber formulations for puncture resistance, but a harder compound is not automatically the best choice. Bridgestone cautions that harder rubber can reduce flex and overall tire performance. Successful Farming reported Firestone figures of 66 to 74 durometer units for farm tire rubber and 80 to 110 for field crop stubble in 2023. These are source-reported ranges, not universal specifications for every tire, crop, or field. Compare tires for the full application—load, traction, flexibility, and expected field conditions—not puncture resistance alone.
4. Set inflation pressure for the tire and load
Use the tire maker’s pressure recommendation for the specific tire size and load, accounting for equipment ballast. There is no universal PSI that applies to every tractor, combine, or field condition. Check the manufacturer’s guidance when load or ballast changes, and use a suitable pressure gauge to measure inflation accurately. A gauge helps you follow the recommendation; it does not itself prevent stalk damage.

5. Keep directional tires mounted as designed
Follow the tire’s directional markings and the equipment maker’s guidance. Successful Farming reports advice against reversing rear combine tires as an old habit: curved lugs are designed to move stalks outward, while reversing them can draw stalks toward the center of the footprint and increase the risk of lug damage. If you are unsure whether a tire is mounted correctly, confirm its direction with the operator’s manual or a tire dealer.
6. Reduce stalk contact with traffic choices and tire fit
Follow rows where practical
When field layout and the operation allow it, travel along crop rows so the lugs are less likely to run over stems. The benefit depends on row spacing, machine setup, and the route required for the job.

Evaluate width as a fit-and-load decision
A Trelleborg Wheel Systems representative cited by Successful Farming suggested considering narrower tires to reduce sidewall exposure. That is not a blanket recommendation: tire width must suit the machine, load, row spacing, and operating conditions. Verify the correct size with a dealer rather than changing tire width solely to avoid stubble.
Manage residue without giving up soil protection
Reducing tire exposure does not mean removing all crop residue. Iowa State University Extension says corn residue cut 12 to 24 inches high can reduce potential tire damage during planting and other field operations. The guidance, originally published May 15, 2006, also notes that standing residue is easier to manage than chopped, detached residue and helps protect soil from wind and water erosion. Proper combine calibration can help produce more uniform residue height and distribution.

For heavy residue, Agriculture Victoria describes options including chopping and spreading while retaining standing stubble, mulching some heavy residue, baling in suitable years, or sowing between rows. Its advice reflects Victoria’s cropping context; local agronomy, soil conditions, and equipment should determine what is appropriate. Retained stubble can protect soil from erosion and conserve moisture and organic matter, especially in dry areas or seasons.

A cut or puncture does not automatically mean a tire must be replaced. The cited guidance says a tire may remain in service if its internal construction is intact, but exposed body or tread cords need professional evaluation. Have a tire dealer inspect the damage and explain whether repair or continued service is appropriate. Ask about the exact coverage terms as well: stubble-damage coverage varies and may differ from an ordinary manufacturing warranty.
