The right automotive jack depends on the vehicle, its approved lifting points, the task, and the surface—not just the jack’s type or advertised capacity. Scissor, floor, bottle, high-lift, pneumatic, and electric scissor jacks each suit different situations. The list mixes jack designs with power sources: pneumatic and electric describe how a jack is powered, and can overlap with a mechanical form.
What are the different types of automotive jacks?
These six categories are useful for comparing common options, but they are not six mutually exclusive engineering designs. Scissor, floor, bottle, and high-lift jacks describe mechanisms or formats; pneumatic and electric describe power sources that may be used with a jack format.
| Type | Best-fit situation | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Scissor | Emergency wheel change, if the vehicle maker approves the lifting point and the jack fits | Compact and portable, but manual and generally intended for limited lifting tasks |
| Hydraulic floor or trolley | Repeated lifting in a garage with a firm, level floor | Wheels help it reposition as the vehicle rises, but it is bulky and needs floor space |
| Hydraulic bottle | Hydraulic lifting where the vehicle’s lift point and ground suit its height and base | Compact for its capacity, but its narrower footprint can be less stable than a floor jack |
| High-lift or farm | Some lifted or off-road vehicles and specialized situations | Offers reach, but has meaningful stability and operator-skill concerns |
| Pneumatic | Workshop use with the required compressed-air supply | Powered lifting; air requirements and compatibility depend on the specific model |
| Electric scissor | Powered lifting where the specific model fits the vehicle and task | Reduces manual effort, but electric operation does not establish capacity or safety |
These are general use cases, not product specifications. Check each jack’s rating, minimum and maximum height, instructions, and fit at the vehicle’s approved lift point.
How each jack works and when to use it
1. Scissor jack: compact emergency lifting
A screw spreads the folding linkage to raise the vehicle. Scissor jacks are small and portable, and commonly supplied with cars and light commercial vehicles, according to an Australian vehicle-operation training resource. They can be suitable for an emergency wheel change only when the vehicle maker specifies a compatible jacking point and the jack has enough capacity and lift range for that vehicle.

They are not a general-purpose garage choice for repeated lifting or a substitute for support equipment when working underneath a vehicle.
2. Hydraulic floor or trolley jack: repeated garage use
A floor jack uses hydraulics and a wheeled frame. The wheels allow it to roll as the vehicle rises, which can be useful in a garage with a suitable hard, level floor. Its larger frame is less convenient to store or carry than a compact emergency jack.
Before choosing one, compare its minimum saddle height with the clearance under the vehicle, its maximum lift with the height needed for the task, and its capacity with the load it must lift. Also check reach and whether you have room to position and operate it.

4. High-lift or farm jack: specialty off-road equipment
A high-lift jack uses a tall ratcheting mechanism and may serve certain lifted or off-road vehicles. It is specialty equipment, not a routine garage jack: a vehicle-operation training resource warns that these jacks are unstable in use and that users should understand their operation before attempting a lift.

5. Pneumatic jack: powered for a workshop setup
A pneumatic jack uses compressed air to supply lifting force. Pneumatic portable floor jacks are described in production-setting training material, and air bottle jacks also appear in retailer guidance. This makes pneumatic equipment a workshop or specialized choice rather than a general consumer recommendation.

6. Electric scissor jack: powered scissor mechanism
An electric scissor jack uses electric power to operate a scissor-jack mechanism; it is not a wholly separate mechanical class. A product catalog lists a 12-volt electric scissor-jack kit, but that product listing does not establish how well any particular model suits a given vehicle.
Treat electric operation as a convenience feature. Verify the jack’s rated capacity, lift range, power requirements, instructions, and fit at the manufacturer-approved lift point.

- Find the approved lift point. Check the vehicle owner’s manual for the correct front, rear, or corner jacking positions. Kia’s 2024 owner-manual resource, for example, warns against using bumpers or other unsupported parts; other vehicles may specify different points.
- Check capacity. Use a jack whose marked capacity is sufficient for the load it must lift, and never exceed its rating. OSHA’s construction rule requires the manufacturer’s rated capacity to be marked and not exceeded.
- Match the height range. Confirm the jack’s minimum or closed height can reach the lifting point and that its maximum lift is enough for the task. A jack that cannot physically fit or reach the point is the wrong choice even if its capacity is adequate.
- Assess the surface and setup. Use a firm, level surface, and position the jack head at the approved point. A bottle jack’s base in particular needs suitable, level ground; do not improvise on a soft or sloped surface.
- Account for handling and storage. A wheeled floor jack needs room to roll and store; a scissor jack is more portable; a bottle jack is compact but has a smaller footprint. Choose around the actual work area and lifting frequency.
- Read model instructions and inspect the jack. Follow the maker’s setup, operation, and maintenance directions. OSHA’s general-industry rule calls for regular lubrication and inspection based on service conditions, and defective jacks should be taken out of service.
Jack safety: never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack
A jack is for lifting, not stand-alone support while someone works underneath. OSHA’s general-industry rule states: “After the load has been raised, it shall be cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured at once.” Use appropriate support equipment, such as correctly rated jack stands, and follow both the support equipment’s and vehicle’s instructions before going under the vehicle. OSHA’s construction rule also addresses jacks used to lift and sustain loads.
- Use only the vehicle maker’s approved lifting points; vehicle structures such as bumpers may not be safe points.
- Set the jack on firm, level ground and center its head at the specified point.
- Do not exceed the jack’s marked capacity, and take a defective jack out of service.
- Secure the raised load before working beneath the vehicle; the jack alone is not sufficient support.
OSHA’s jack requirements are U.S. workplace regulations; follow applicable local rules as well as the vehicle and equipment manufacturers’ instructions.
