The Porsche 718 Cayman has a credible edge over the 911 in five specific areas: its 2025 base model costs less, its mid-engine layout puts the engine behind the seats, it has luggage compartments at both ends, and a Porsche Monmouth comparison reports it as smaller with a tighter turning circle. Those advantages don’t make it the better sports car for everyone: the 911 offers rear seats on some configurations and higher listed performance in the model-year figures available here.
Where the Cayman has an advantage
1. The specified 2025 base Cayman costs less
Porsche listed the 2025 718 Cayman at $75,400. Porsche Newsroom listed the 2025 911 Carrera at $120,100—a $44,700 difference in base MSRP. These are model-year starting prices, not current 2026 or 2027 prices, and they exclude options and other charges. The 718 figure excludes taxes, title, registration, delivery/processing/handling, dealer charges and possible tariffs; the 911 release separately excludes taxes, title, registration, dealer charges and delivery/processing/handling fees. 2. Its mid-engine layout offers a different balance
The Cayman places its boxer engine ahead of the rear axle and behind the seats; the 911 uses a rear-engine layout. Porsche describes the 718’s mid-engine concept as resulting in a low, central center of gravity. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design, not independent proof that every Cayman handles better or is quicker through corners than every 911. The layouts give the cars distinct engineering character, so which feels preferable is a matter for the driver and the specific versions being compared. 3. It has luggage space at both ends
Porsche Monmouth’s 2025 comparison reports 5.3 cubic feet in the Cayman’s front compartment and 9.7 cubic feet in its rear compartment. It reports 4.8 cubic feet in the 911’s front compartment. The 911’s optional rear seats add flexibility: depending on the seating and body configuration, that space can serve passengers or belongings. The dealer comparison does not establish identical cargo conditions across every variant, so check the exact car’s configuration if storage is decisive. [Porsche Monmouth’s 2025 comparison]

4. The cited comparison gives the Cayman a tighter turning circle
Porsche Monmouth reports turning-circle diameters of 36.1 feet for the Cayman and 36.7 feet for the 911. That’s a 0.6-foot difference in the dealer’s comparison, potentially useful when maneuvering in tight spaces. It is not a universal figure for every derivative; confirm the exact versions before treating it as a direct specification match. [Porsche Monmouth’s 2025 comparison]
5. It is more compact in the cited size comparison
The same Porsche Monmouth comparison describes the 911 as about six inches longer and two inches wider than the Cayman. A smaller footprint can matter in a narrow garage or on a tight street, but the reported difference is approximate and applies to the comparison’s vehicles—not automatically to every 718 and 911 derivative. Where the 911 has the edge in the available figures
The Porsche USA pages surfaced different model years, so these specifications are useful context, not a same-year comparison or a controlled test.
| Model shown | Power | 0–60 mph | Top track speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 718 Cayman | 300 hp | 4.7 seconds | 171 mph |
| 2027 911 Carrera | 388 hp | 3.9 seconds | 183 mph |
On those listed figures, the 2027 Carrera has more power, a quicker stated 0–60 time and a higher stated top track speed than the 2025 base Cayman. Because the model years differ, they do not establish how equivalent versions from the same year compare. Nor do specifications alone settle which car is more enjoyable or suitable for a particular driver. [Porsche USA: 2025 718 Cayman; Porsche USA: 2027 911 Carrera]

How to decide between them
- Choose the Cayman if the lower 2025 base-model MSRP, two-seat mid-engine design, or compact dimensions are central to what you want.
- Consider the 911 if its rear-seat option matters or the stronger performance figures in the currently surfaced 2027 Carrera listing are more relevant to you.
- Compare like with like: match model year and trim, then compare configured prices including options and fees, performance specifications, cargo arrangements, and dimensions. If the figures are close, drive both versions you’re considering.
The evidence here consists of manufacturer specifications and a dealer-published comparison, not a named independent study or population-level handling measurement. In particular, the Cayman’s layout and reported size advantage support a design and packaging case—not a claim that it universally beats the 911 on track or on the road.
