A good first 125cc motorcycle should fit your body, feel manageable at low speed and suit your budget after insurance and servicing—not just have the lowest advertised price. The Honda CB125F is the clearest commuter-value benchmark in this shortlist: Honda lists 2026 prices in the UK and Ireland, while local prices for most of the other candidates need checking. These six bikes cover practical commuter and sportier naked-bike styles; they are not a verified ranking of the six cheapest motorcycles in any one market.
How to choose a beginner-friendly 125
Start with how and where you will ride. A commuter-focused bike prioritizes straightforward everyday use; a naked bike often has a sportier stance and styling. Neither style is automatically easier for every rider. Sit on a candidate if possible, check whether you can confidently move it at walking pace, and consider how its weight feels when parking or turning around.

- Compare local ownership costs: Ask dealers for an out-the-door price and compare new and used examples in your area. Include registration or delivery charges where applicable.
- Get insurance quotes first: Premiums depend on the rider, location, motorcycle and coverage. Quote the exact model and year rather than assuming a low purchase price means low insurance.
- Check fit and handling: Seat height is only one part of fit. Handlebar reach, leg position and the bike’s balance when stopped all matter.
- Confirm service support: Look for a nearby dealer or motorcycle shop that can maintain the model and obtain parts.
- Verify licensing locally: A 125cc engine does not by itself establish what you may ride or what training and licence you need.
Six 125cc motorcycles to consider
The Honda CB125F is the strongest price-and-specification reference here because Honda publishes market-specific prices and specifications. For the other candidates, the seat-height and weight figures below come from a secondary comparison, not independent checks of current manufacturer specifications. Confirm the exact model year, availability, equipment and price in your country before deciding.

If everyday commuting and a clearly published price matter most, begin with the CB125F and use the relevant Honda market listing as a reference—not as proof that it is the cheapest option where you live. If you prefer a naked-bike style, compare the GSX-S125, MT-125, 125 Duke, CB125R and Z125 by local price, fit, low-speed balance, insurance quote and service access. The most suitable first bike is the one you can afford to own and control comfortably, not necessarily the one with the lowest seat or lightest published weight.

Check the licence rules where you ride
Licensing requirements are jurisdiction-specific. For example, Suzuki Netherlands says an A1 motorcycle licence applies to motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW from age 18, and that a separate motorcycle licence is required in the Netherlands. Those rules should not be applied to other countries; check your local licensing authority for permitted motorcycles, minimum age and training requirements. Suzuki Netherlands motorcycle licences
