Consider the K5 if you want more listed passenger and trunk space, a stronger base engine, AWD availability or the 290-hp GT. These are U.S. model-year 2025 figures, not current dealer quotes.

Which one costs less?
The K4’s 2025 launch starting MSRP was $5,000 below the K5’s: $21,990 versus $26,990, both before destination. That compares each model’s entry price, not equivalent trims or what a dealer charges now.

Which sedan has more room?
Kia lists 105.3 cu. ft. of passenger volume and 15.6 cu. ft. of cargo capacity for the K5. The K4 is listed at 98.7 cu. ft. of passenger volume on most trims and 14.6 cu. ft. of cargo capacity; its GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo passenger-volume figure falls to 95.8 cu. ft. with a sunroof. By the regular K4 specification, the K5 has 6.6 cu. ft. more listed passenger volume and 1.0 cu. ft. more cargo capacity.
Those manufacturer capacity measurements help distinguish the cars on paper, but they do not establish how comfortable a particular seat or rear-seat position will feel. Bring the intended passengers and test the seating and trunk with the items you regularly carry.
How do the engines compare?
K4: lower-output standard engine, optional turbo
The K4’s standard 2.0L four-cylinder is rated at 147 hp. Kia lists a 1.6L turbo four-cylinder with 190 hp for the GT-Line Turbo.

K5: stronger base engine and high-output GT
The K5’s standard 2.5L four-cylinder is rated at 191 hp, 44 hp more than the K4’s standard engine. The K5 GT uses a 2.5L turbo four-cylinder rated at 290 hp. These horsepower ratings identify the output differences; they do not by themselves establish acceleration, ride quality or day-to-day drivability.
Does either one offer all-wheel drive?
For the 2025 U.S. lineup, Kia’s K5 GT-Line pricing release lists both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. The reviewed U.S. K4 specification table lists front-wheel-drive configurations. AWD availability is specific to the K5 GT-Line, not the entire K5 range; check the individual vehicle’s specification and window sticker.

Which should you choose?
Choose the K4 if
- You want the lower launch starting price and are comparing entry-level sedans.
- A compact sedan fits your parking, commuting or household needs better than a midsize car.
- The K4’s listed passenger and cargo capacity works for the people and belongings you carry.
- You are content with front-wheel drive in the configurations shown in Kia’s U.S. K4 specifications.
Choose the K5 if
- You want the larger midsize sedan, with more listed passenger and trunk capacity.
- You prefer a stronger standard engine than the K4’s 147-hp base engine.
- You specifically want the option of all-wheel drive on a 2025 GT-Line.
- You are interested in the 290-hp GT and will compare that trim’s price and equipment with the alternatives.
Do not assume the K5 automatically includes every feature you want because it is larger or starts at a higher price. Compare the exact trim, packages and vehicle sticker: equipment varies by configuration. Kia’s 2025 K5 overview describes the K5 as a five-passenger midsize sedan, while its sedan lineup page reflects Kia’s current lineup; neither changes the model-year scope of the figures above.
