6.4 HEMI vs. 7.3 Godzilla: How Do These Engines Compare?

The surfaced Ford 7.3L rating tops the cited Ram 6.4L HEMI figures, but engine output alone does not determine a truck’s towing rating.

In the cited stock-truck ratings, Ford’s 7.3L Godzilla V8 is rated at 430 hp and 485 lb-ft, versus 410 hp and 429 lb-ft for Ram’s 6.4L HEMI V8. That is a published advantage of 20 hp and 56 lb-ft for the Ford engine in these specific applications—not proof of a universal performance or towing winner. The ratings come from different model-year contexts, and the Ford capability page was unavailable for direct inspection.

Stock 6.4 HEMI vs. 7.3 Godzilla specifications

Engine and cited application Published output Transmission or features in cited source
6.4L HEMI V8, 2024 Ram Heavy Duty 410 hp; 429 lb-ft 8HP75-LCV eight-speed automatic; MDS cylinder deactivation and variable cam timing
7.3L OHV PFI gas V8, Ford Super Duty capability result surfaced for 2025 430 hp; 485 lb-ft Transmission details were not stated in the surfaced result

The Ram figures are listed in its 2024 Ram Heavy Duty guide. Ford’s 7.3L figures were surfaced for its Super Duty capability page, but that page returned 404 when checked. Treat the Ford rating as a surfaced manufacturer result rather than a directly verified current specification, and confirm it against the exact model-year truck before buying.

The difference is straightforward arithmetic on those ratings: the Ford has 20 more hp and 56 more lb-ft. It does not establish how two trucks will accelerate, feel under load, or perform in a controlled comparison. The cited Ram information is from 2024, while the Ford result is associated with a 2025 capability page, so the applications and model-year contexts are not perfectly matched.

Which engine is better for towing?

Peak engine output alone cannot identify the better tow vehicle or establish a maximum trailer rating. Use the official tow chart for the exact truck configuration, then check the specific truck’s labels and equipment.

  • [6.4L HEMI MDS Engine Complete Refurbishment Kit] This kit provides a solution for 6.4L HEMI V8 engines equipped with the MDS system. As a comprehensive MDS kit, it is designed to remove unreliable multi-displacement system components—including the frequently failing MDS lifters—thereby significantly enhancing reliability and performance.
  • [Prevents Camshaft/Lifter Failures] Replaces fragile OEM MDS lifters with durable non-MDS lifters and pairs them with a specialized camshaft to resolve lubrication issues, lifter collapse, and cam lobe wear.
  • Compare the same cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, GVWR, and equipment where possible; ratings can vary among configurations.
  • Use the manufacturer’s trailer rating only for the configuration and equipment it covers. Ram’s 2024 chart states that trailer figures apply when properly equipped.
  • Check payload separately. Ram’s guide explicitly says trailer weight and payload are mutually exclusive, so a maximum trailer number should not be treated as available payload for passengers and cargo.

A higher torque rating may look attractive on paper, but the truck’s published configuration-specific ratings—not a comparison of engine peaks—answer what it is rated to tow. Verify the applicable model year and configuration rather than carrying a rating across trims or equipment combinations.

Features and fuel economy

The 2024 Ram listing pairs its 6.4L HEMI with an 8HP75-LCV eight-speed automatic and identifies MDS cylinder deactivation and variable cam timing. Ram describes MDS as “Multiple Displacement System (MDS) fuel saver cylinder-deactivation technology.” That is a feature description, not a measured fuel-economy result.

No like-for-like fuel-consumption comparison is established for comparable HEMI and Godzilla trucks here. MDS alone is not enough to declare the Ram more efficient, just as the output ratings do not establish the Ford’s real-world fuel use.

Do not confuse the stock Godzilla with MEGAZILLA

Ford’s production 7.3L Super Duty gas V8 and its 7.3L MEGAZILLA crate engine are distinct products. Ford Performance lists MEGAZILLA at 612 hp at 5,580 rpm and 670 lb-ft at 3,920 rpm; those are crate-engine figures, not the stock Super Duty rating.

  • 2014-2019 Dodge Ram 2500-5500 6.4L Hemi Full Synthetic Oil Change Kit Mopar OEM

Ford Performance describes the crate engine as having CNC-ported heads, forged pistons, and forged connecting rods, and says custom calibration is required. It is a modified build option, not a like-for-like stock-engine rival to the Ram HEMI or an established drop-in upgrade for a particular vehicle. An engine-build comparison also needs the intended vehicle, supporting parts, packaging, and calibration—not just the crate engine’s peak output.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose based on a specific truck, not the engine name alone. Compare the exact model year, configuration, factory equipment, and official ratings for the trucks you are considering.
  • If towing is the priority, start with the tow chart and payload label. Confirm the rating for the precise configuration and how passengers, cargo, and trailer load fit within the applicable limits.
  • If comparing stock output on paper, the surfaced Ford rating is higher. The cited figures show 430 hp and 485 lb-ft for the 7.3L versus 410 hp and 429 lb-ft for the 2024 Ram 6.4L, with the source-year and verification limits noted above.
  • If planning a build, evaluate MEGAZILLA separately. Its output and hardware describe a crate-engine package, and Ford specifies a need for custom calibration.
