There is no universally best used naked bike—and no evidence-backed five-model blacklist. The smarter shortlist depends on your budget, license, riding style and local market; the smarter avoid list is five warning signs on the individual motorcycle. Check the exact bike’s paperwork, service history and condition before paying.
Five used naked bikes to consider
These are candidates for different priorities, not a definitive ranking. The recommendations draw on a 2025 UK middleweight guide and a 2026 Spanish-market guide, so prices, versions and availability may differ where you live. Compare local listings and verify the model year and specification.
1. Yamaha MT-07: an approachable all-rounder
TuMoto’s Spanish-market guide presents the MT-07 as widely available and approachable, including in an A2-restricted version. It notes that earlier-generation suspension can be a limitation on rough roads or at a brisk pace. Compare generations, inspect the individual bike and confirm any restriction in its documentation. TuMoto’s guide
2. Suzuki SV650: a value-minded twin
TuMoto describes the SV650 as a lower-budget alternative with a relatively simple twin-cylinder layout. That makes it worth considering if purchase value is a priority, but it does not establish the cost or condition of any particular used example. Review its service records and inspect it as carefully as any other bike. TuMoto’s guide

3. Honda CB500F or Hornet: a practical lower-cost candidate
TuMoto presents the CB500F as inexpensive to maintain, pointing to its two-cylinder layout and modest tire sizes. Treat that as the guide’s assessment, not a promise of low ownership costs: local parts and labor prices, maintenance history and the bike’s condition all matter. TuMoto’s guide
4. Honda CB650R: a four-cylinder roadster with room for a passenger
Visordown describes the 649cc CB650R as an accessible middleweight with upright ergonomics and a stronger pillion proposition than many rivals. In the UK context of its guide, it also identifies earlier CB650F versions as lower-priced alternatives. Check the specific generation, condition and asking price in your market. Visordown’s guide
5. Kawasaki Z900: performance value for a full-license rider
TuMoto recommends the Z900 for full-license riders seeking performance value. Do not assume the model name alone tells you which power version is for sale: inspect the registration and technical documents to confirm the exact homologation and legal status. TuMoto’s guide
Rank #2
- Condition: 100% brand new
- Material Type: High Quality ABS
- Color: Black
- Quantity: 1 item
- Easy to operate without explanation
Other candidates in the researched pool include the Yamaha MT-09, Triumph Street Triple 765, Kawasaki Z650, KTM 790 Duke and BMW F 900 R. TuMoto notes that the KTM and BMW can offer used-market value while carrying higher official parts and labor costs than simpler twin-cylinder options; it advises requiring an impeccable service history. Five reasons to avoid a particular used naked bike
These are reasons to walk away from a listing or get professional help—not claims that an entire model line is unreliable. A well-documented, well-maintained example can be a better buy than a neglected bike with a more appealing reputation.
1. Missing service records or unexplained gaps
Ask for invoices and a coherent maintenance history. If records are missing, you cannot readily confirm what work was done or when. TuMoto particularly emphasizes documentation when maintenance costs may be higher. TuMoto’s guide

2. Signs of a fall, damage or neglect
Inspect exposed parts and look for inconsistencies between the bike’s overall condition and the seller’s account. TuMoto advises checking for fall damage, especially on a first-bike candidate. If you see questionable damage, have a qualified mechanic assess it before making a decision. TuMoto’s guide
3. Unclear registration, restriction or homologation
A listing title is not proof of the bike’s legal power version or license eligibility. Ask to see the actual registration and technical documentation before travelling or paying, and make sure they match the motorcycle. TuMoto’s guide

4. A seller who will not permit a cold start—or abnormal behavior
TuMoto recommends starting the bike cold before buying. If the seller refuses, treat that as a reason to pause or walk away; if the bike behaves abnormally, do not try to diagnose it from a brief viewing. Seek a professional assessment. TuMoto’s guide
5. Worn chain, tires or brake pads with no price allowance
Check these wear items and account for likely replacement costs in your offer. TuMoto specifically recommends negotiating with those costs in mind. If you cannot estimate the work confidently, ask a mechanic for an inspection or quote before agreeing a price. TuMoto’s guide
How to choose between the candidates
Compare motorcycles on the same practical criteria, rather than choosing by badge or headline price alone.
- Total cost: Compare local purchase prices and expected maintenance costs. The UK and Spanish guides cover different markets, so their prices should not be combined into one benchmark.
- Performance: Decide how much power and what kind of delivery suits your experience and intended riding.
- Fit and comfort: Consider seat height, weight, riding position and whether you regularly carry a passenger.
- License and paperwork: Verify the exact version’s power rating, restriction and documentation for your jurisdiction.
- Year and equipment: Confirm the model generation and equipment on the specific bike; features and suspension can differ between versions.
- Condition: Weigh service records, inspection findings and remaining life in wear items alongside the asking price.
License rules and model versions need local verification
For Spain’s A2 audience, TuMoto cautions that a model name may cover motorcycles with different homologations. Its examples include the Z900, MT-09 and BMW F 900 R, whose versions can differ in rated power or restrictability. Check the specific motorcycle’s technical documentation before travelling or paying. Licensing law and eligible restrictions depend on geography, so verify the rules that apply where the bike will be registered. TuMoto’s guide

What reliability rankings can—and cannot—tell you
Bike Reliability labels its ranking “Overall reliability · 2005–2025,” but explains that the measure is first-time MOT pass rate from anonymised DVSA MOT results. It is UK roadworthiness context, not a comprehensive measure of mechanical reliability, engine life or expected repair costs. The displayed ranking requires at least 1,000 tests per model and warns that smaller samples are noisier. Bike Reliability’s methodology
Use a pass-rate ranking as one limited data point, not a substitute for checking the history and condition of the individual bike. The available sources do not establish a general reliability statistic for naked motorcycles that can be applied across models and markets.
