The most useful changes are practical: incoming calls no longer need to hide your route, widgets and Live Activities add glanceable information to the Dashboard, and Messages becomes quicker to use.
That is why I am more interested in returning to CarPlay than I am in the Liquid Glass redesign. The visual refresh is noticeable, but these five changes affect how CarPlay works during an actual drive.
What you need
- An iPhone running iOS 26 or later.
- A vehicle or aftermarket receiver that supports Apple CarPlay.
- Compatible app support for widgets or Live Activities where applicable.
Apple’s current guide covers iOS 26.5 and lists support for iPhone 11 and later, along with the second-generation iPhone SE and newer. Availability can vary by iPhone model, vehicle, app, region, language, and carrier. Update from Settings → General → Software Update, preferably after backing up your iPhone and while the vehicle is parked.
1. Compact call alerts are the quiet upgrade I wanted
Incoming calls now use a compact presentation in CarPlay instead of taking over the entire display. Apple says the change lets drivers see who is calling without missing important information such as upcoming directions.

This may be the most consistently useful improvement here. A call notification is still an interruption, but it no longer has to hide the navigation screen just as a turn is approaching. You can make a quicker decision about whether to answer, while Siri and steering-wheel controls remain the preferable ways to manage the call.
It is a small interface change with an outsized practical effect: CarPlay feels more like a driving interface and less like a phone projection that interrupts itself.
2. Widgets make the Dashboard genuinely useful
CarPlay widgets put selected information on the Dashboard so you can glance at it without opening a full app. Depending on app and vehicle support, useful categories may include calendar appointments, weather, battery or charging information, sports updates, smart-home status, and trip-related details.
To configure them, do this while parked:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets and follow the onscreen instructions.
The available widget stacks depend partly on the vehicle’s display. Apple also provides controls for Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions in the same settings area. I would start with only a few simple, glanceable widgets rather than filling the Dashboard with dense text.
A widget available on your iPhone is not automatically available in CarPlay. Developers can mark widgets as unsuitable for CarPlay, and some widgets may be noninteractive. Others can launch a supported CarPlay app. Apple explains these behaviors in its CarPlay widget and Live Activity guidance.

3. Live Activities mean fewer app launches
Live Activities can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard while an event is in progress. Apple’s examples include Maps directions, live sports updates, food-delivery estimates, and other app-based status information.
This is potentially the biggest change for people who use CarPlay even when they are not actively navigating. A delivery estimate or sports score can remain visible without opening another app and leaving the Dashboard.
For an individual app, check:
Settings → Apps → [app] → Live Activities
However, this is not a guarantee that every app will appear in CarPlay. The app must provide a compatible Live Activity, there must be an active event, and your notification or Focus settings must allow it. CarPlay Live Activities are primarily glanceable and noninteractive, not miniature versions of their iPhone apps.
If nothing appears, confirm that the app is updated, Live Activities are enabled, an activity is actually running, and the CarPlay Dashboard is visible. Apple notes that Focus modes and Live Activity settings can limit what you see.
4. Tapbacks are better than dictating a needless reply
CarPlay Messages now supports Tapbacks. If somebody sends a message that only needs acknowledgment, you can react with a heart, thumbs-up, or another emoji instead of dictating a full sentence.

With Siri, Apple’s example is “like that message.” You can also select the Tapback control and choose another emoji when appropriate.
This is useful for messages such as “I’m leaving now” or “Can you pick up dinner?” A quick reaction can avoid composing an unnecessary reply and reduce the amount of interaction required. It does not make messaging risk-free, though: use Siri and steering-wheel controls, and do not manually operate the display while driving.

5. Pinned conversations put the right people first
Conversations pinned in Messages on your iPhone now appear in the Messages app in CarPlay. That keeps important people—such as family members, a partner, or a frequent travel companion—easier to reach than they would be in a long list of recent conversations.
There is no separate CarPlay favorites system to maintain. Pin the conversation in Messages on your iPhone, and CarPlay reflects that organization. The feature applies to Apple Messages conversations, not every messaging service.
There is also a privacy consideration: pinned conversations make your communication structure more visible on a shared vehicle display.

Why Messages may be missing
If Messages disappears from CarPlay after updating, do not assume the system is broken. Check that the app is present in the CarPlay layout, that the iPhone is connected correctly, and that message notifications and announcements are configured.
One particularly easy-to-miss cause is App Lock. Reporting from Tom’s Guide found that protecting Messages with App Lock can prevent it from appearing in CarPlay because the app requires Face ID authentication. Disabling App Lock for the affected app was the reported workaround.

Usually, no. These five changes are iOS 26 CarPlay features delivered through the existing platform: compact calls, widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, and pinned conversations.
That does not mean every feature will look or behave identically in every vehicle. Display size, head-unit hardware, vehicle firmware, connection type, and automaker implementation can affect the experience. iOS 26 also does not fix bad USB cables, poor wireless connections, incompatible aftermarket receivers, or slow vehicle hardware.
CarPlay Ultra is a separate, more deeply integrated vehicle experience involving additional screens and controls. Apple says the iOS 26 updates extend to CarPlay Ultra, but that does not mean every existing CarPlay vehicle supports Ultra.

Quick troubleshooting
Widgets are missing
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Go to Settings → General → CarPlay → [vehicle] → Widgets.
- Check that widgets have been added to the selected vehicle.
- Verify that the app supplies a CarPlay-compatible widget.
- Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay after changing the settings.
Live Activities do not appear
- Make sure the app has an active Live Activity.
- Check Settings → Apps → [app] → Live Activities.
- Review Focus and notification settings.
- Update the app and confirm the CarPlay Dashboard is visible.
- Remember that the app must support a CarPlay-compatible presentation.
The Dashboard feels crowded
Remove low-value widgets, turn off Widget Suggestions or Smart Rotate, and keep navigation, calls, and media controls visually dominant. The goal is quicker recognition, not more information for its own sake.
The verdict
iOS 26 does not turn CarPlay into a replacement for a modern vehicle infotainment system, and Liquid Glass alone would not convince me to return. The functional improvements are more persuasive.
Compact call alerts should help almost everyone. Widgets and Live Activities make the Dashboard useful between navigation prompts, although both depend on app support. Tapbacks and pinned conversations matter most to people who regularly use Messages.
If CarPlay felt dependable but frustratingly limited, iOS 26 is a worthwhile reason to try it again—without automatically buying a new car, wireless adapter, or head unit.
