To reduce avoidable wear in a manual car, keep your foot off the clutch between shifts, use the brake rather than the clutch to hold on a hill, keep your hand off the gear lever except when shifting, avoid making the engine pull hard in too high a gear, and downshift smoothly. These habits are not a guarantee against repairs, and the exact guidance can vary by vehicle; use your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.
1. Resting your foot on the clutch pedal
Even light, unintended pressure can keep the clutch from fully disengaging and add wear. Kia’s 2026 Tasman manual warns that resting a foot on the pedal can cause premature clutch wear and damage. Saskatchewan Government Insurance advises against depressing the clutch for extended periods, and Alberta’s 2023 Driver’s Guide describes unnecessary foot-on-clutch use as “riding the clutch,” which can cause extra wear.
Keep your left foot off the pedal when you are not operating it. When stopped for a longer wait, follow your vehicle’s instructions for selecting neutral and using the brake rather than holding the clutch down.

2. Holding the car on a hill with the clutch
Using clutch slip to keep a stopped car from rolling places wear on the clutch. Ford’s owner-manual guidance says not to hold the vehicle stationary on a hill with the clutch pedal because doing so reduces clutch life.
Use the parking brake, or a hill-start aid if your car has one and its manual describes how to use it. When you are ready to move, release the brake and operate the clutch and accelerator as directed for your vehicle. Do not treat a hill-start aid as a substitute for checking how your specific car works.

3. Using the gear lever as a handrest
After shifting, return your hand to the steering wheel instead of leaving it on the gear lever. Kia warns: “Do not use the shift lever as a handrest during driving, as this can result in premature wear of the transmission shift forks.” That warning concerns repeated use as a handrest; it is not a claim that a brief touch will immediately damage the transmission.

4. Making the engine pull hard in too high a gear
If the engine is struggling to accelerate, vibrating harshly, or making unwanted noise under load, select a lower gear rather than pressing harder on the accelerator in a tall gear. SGI advises drivers to consider engine RPM, gear, and road speed together when choosing a gear.

Ford’s cited owner-manual guidance warns that lugging below 1,250 RPM may cause engine damage, poor fuel economy, poor acceleration, and unwanted noise, vibration, and harshness. That threshold belongs to the vehicle and manual context cited; it is not a universal shift point for manual cars. Follow your own car’s guidance and respond to how the engine behaves.

5. Downshifting abruptly or over-revving
A downshift changes the engine speed required for the car’s road speed. Making the change abruptly—especially on a slippery surface—can unsettle the car. Nissan’s 2024 UK Juke manual warns against abrupt downshifts on slippery roads and against over-revving the engine during a downshift.
Depress the clutch fully when shifting, as Nissan advises, to avoid gear clash or chipping. Choose a lower gear that suits your speed and conditions, and make the shift smoothly. The Nissan guidance is specific to that model and market, so consult your own vehicle’s operating instructions.
