Your check engine light means the onboard diagnostics (OBD) system has detected a problem; it does not identify a failed part by itself. Possible causes include a loose fuel cap, an engine misfire, or a fault in an emissions system. A steady light and a blinking light call for different responses, and the vehicle’s owner’s manual is the best guide to model-specific instructions.
What the check engine light means
Onboard diagnostics monitor emissions-related systems and turn on a dashboard warning when the system detects a malfunction. The vehicle stores a diagnostic trouble code along with operating conditions that can help a technician investigate the issue. A code points toward a system or fault; it is not proof that a particular component has failed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that a repair shop or dealership can use an OBD scan tool to diagnose the cause: EPA guidance on the check engine light.

5 possible reasons the light may be on
These are plausible causes, not a ranking by frequency. The cause depends on the vehicle and its symptoms, and diagnosis may require more than reading a code.
1. A loose or missing fuel cap
A fuel cap that is missing or not tightened properly can allow fuel vapors to escape, and OBD can detect the resulting emissions-system problem. After reaching a safe place, make sure the cap is present and closed correctly. Some vehicles use a capless fuel-fill inlet; a vehicle-specific manual hosted by NHTSA also identifies an inlet that has not closed properly as a possible temporary trigger. If the warning remains on, arrange diagnosis.

The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
2. An engine misfire
A misfire occurs when combustion in one or more cylinders does not happen as it should. OBD can detect misfire, which may cause rough running or may not be obvious to the driver. A severe misfire can damage the catalytic converter, so a blinking check engine light deserves prompt attention. The warning alone does not identify which component, if any, needs replacement.
3. An oxygen-sensor or related emissions-system fault
Oxygen sensors are among the emissions-related systems monitored by OBD-II. A fault involving a sensor or related system may turn on the light, but a code that names an oxygen sensor does not automatically prove the sensor itself is bad. A technician may need to test the sensor and surrounding system before recommending a repair.

- ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.
4. A catalytic-converter efficiency or damage problem
OBD-II monitors catalytic-converter efficiency. A converter problem can trigger the warning, and severe misfire can damage the converter or other emissions-control equipment. A continuous rotten-egg or burning-sulphur odor can be a clue to a converter or other emissions-control problem, according to the Federal Trade Commission, but odor alone cannot confirm the cause: FTC auto-repair guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. A fuel problem, including very low or contaminated fuel
One vehicle manual hosted by NHTSA lists running out of fuel and poor-quality or water-contaminated fuel as possible temporary triggers; the engine may misfire or run poorly. This is model-specific manual guidance, not evidence that fuel problems are among the most common causes across all cars. If the light appears after refueling or the engine runs poorly, note those details for the technician.

What to do: steady versus blinking light
| Warning | What it can indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Steady | A detected fault that still needs attention, even if the car seems to drive normally. | Check that the fuel cap or fill inlet is properly closed. If the light stays on, arrange diagnosis soon. EPA warns that ignoring a detected problem can increase emissions and may lead to worse damage or higher repair costs. |
| Blinking | A severe problem, such as a misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. | Reduce speed, avoid high speeds and heavy loads, minimize driving, and seek service promptly. Follow the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific guidance. |
If the vehicle feels unsafe, is running very roughly, or shows other serious symptoms, stop somewhere safe and consult the manual or a qualified repair professional rather than continuing to drive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to get the cause diagnosed
- Make only a safe, simple check. With the vehicle parked safely, confirm that the fuel cap is present and properly closed, or that a capless inlet is shut as the manual instructs.
- Note what happened. Tell the technician whether the light is steady or blinking, when it appeared, and whether the engine runs poorly or an unusual odor is present.
- Have the stored code retrieved and interpreted. A repair shop or dealership can connect an OBD scan tool and use the code and vehicle symptoms to investigate. Ask what tests support the proposed repair; do not replace a sensor or converter solely because its name appears in a code.
Consumer code readers can retrieve diagnostic codes, but compatibility and features vary. A code is a clue for diagnosis, not confirmation that a specific part should be replaced. Other OBD-monitored possibilities include evaporative-system faults, fuel-delivery problems, and exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) faults.
