CarPlay messaging problems usually come from one of four places: Siri, notifications, Driving Focus, the CarPlay connection, or the iPhone’s own Messages service. Before changing settings, send a test message from the iPhone’s Messages app. If it fails there too, fix the phone or cellular connection first. If it works on the iPhone but not through CarPlay, start with the steps below.
1. Turn on Announce Messages and Messages notifications
CarPlay may receive a text without reading it aloud if message announcements or Messages notifications are disabled. On an iPhone running iOS 26, check both settings:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Announce Messages.
- Turn on Announce Notifications.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Tap Notifications and make sure Allow Notifications is enabled.
When Siri announces an incoming message in CarPlay, you can also tap Announce to change the announcement behavior. Some older Apple support pages show the path as Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > CarPlay. That is not the current iOS 26 menu path.

2. Check Driving Focus
Driving Focus is designed to silence or limit incoming notifications while the iPhone is connected to CarPlay. That can appear to be a messaging fault when the system is actually applying its safety settings.
To check it from the CarPlay screen:
- Open Settings in CarPlay.
- Select Driving Focus.
- Review Activate With CarPlay.
If you are a passenger and Driving Focus has activated, tap the notification and choose I’m Not Driving. You can also review the iPhone settings at Settings > Focus > Driving. Under Allowed Notifications, check that the people you want to hear from are permitted.
Do not assume that every incoming message should appear while Driving Focus is active. The feature can suppress alerts even when Messages itself is working normally.

- Make sure Siri is enabled on the iPhone.
- In CarPlay, open Settings > Siri. On some iPhones, the menu is called Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- If you want messages sent without a confirmation prompt, select Automatically Send Messages.
- Activate Siri by pressing and holding the voice-command button on the steering wheel, touching and holding the CarPlay Dashboard or Home button, or saying “Hey Siri” in vehicles that support it.
Try a short command such as, “Send a message to Alex saying I’ll be there in ten minutes.” If Siri can hear you but cannot send the message, check the underlying Messages connection in step five. If Siri does not activate at all, the issue is more likely the microphone, steering-wheel control, CarPlay connection, or Siri settings.
Long incoming messages may not be read in full automatically. Siri might announce only the sender and say that they sent a message. Ask, “Read the full message,” to hear the contents.
4. Reconnect CarPlay, replace the cable, or forget the car
If Messages is missing, CarPlay freezes, or Siri works on the iPhone but not through the vehicle, troubleshoot the connection itself.
| CarPlay type | What to check |
|---|---|
| Wired | Try a different USB cable and another USB port. A direct USB cable is preferable; some USB-C-to-Lightning adapter, cable, and vehicle combinations can interfere with wired CarPlay. |
| Wireless | Make sure Settings > Bluetooth and Settings > Wi-Fi are on. In Wi-Fi settings, open the CarPlay network and confirm Auto-Join is enabled. |
Then restart both the iPhone and the vehicle. If the problem remains, remove the pairing and set it up again:

Finally, check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is allowed. Apple’s CarPlay troubleshooting guide covers these connection checks.
5. Fix the Messages connection on the iPhone
CarPlay is only an interface for Messages. It cannot repair a failed iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS connection. Open the iPhone’s Messages app and send a test message before diagnosing CarPlay further.
For a red Not Delivered alert:
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.
- Tap the red exclamation point beside the message.
- Tap Try Again.
- If needed, tap Send as Text Message.
To let the iPhone automatically fall back to SMS when iMessage is unavailable, open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on Send as Text Message.

If messages appear on one Apple device but not another, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and select the correct phone number or email address. After changing SIMs or setting up a new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and confirm that the intended phone line is turned on.
| Message type | Connection required |
|---|---|
| iMessage | Wi-Fi or cellular data |
| RCS | iOS 18 or later and a carrier that supports RCS. Activation can take several hours. |
| SMS/MMS | A compatible carrier plan and cellular service. SMS may work over Wi-Fi when Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. |
Green bubbles do not mean CarPlay is broken. They indicate RCS or SMS/MMS rather than iMessage. Those messages can still work through CarPlay if the carrier service, iPhone, Siri, and vehicle connection are functioning.
For Apple’s detailed messaging checks, see If you can’t send or receive messages and Apple’s explanation of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Most likely checks |
|---|---|

| Messages is not visible in CarPlay | Tap Home to view all apps, check Screen Time restrictions, then reconnect CarPlay |
| Messages fail on the iPhone too | Network, carrier, Send & Receive, cellular line, or iMessage/RCS/SMS settings |
| Only long messages seem incomplete | Ask Siri to read the full message; it may announce only the sender automatically |

Why can Siri read messages but not send them through CarPlay?
Confirm Siri is enabled, test the steering-wheel voice button or CarPlay Siri button, and check the CarPlay Siri settings. You can enable Automatically Send Messages if you do not want a confirmation prompt. If sending also fails in the iPhone Messages app, troubleshoot the network or carrier service.
Do green text bubbles mean CarPlay messaging is broken?
No. Green bubbles identify RCS or SMS/MMS messages rather than iMessage. They can work through CarPlay when the iPhone has the required carrier service and connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
First determine whether Messages works on the iPhone itself. If it does, check Announce Messages, Messages notifications, Driving Focus, Siri, and the CarPlay connection in that order. Replace suspect cables, forget and re-pair the vehicle if necessary, and remember that missing alerts may be caused by filtering or Focus settings rather than a failed CarPlay system.
