But the headline still has a solid basis: Tesla’s profitability deteriorated sharply. Operating income fell 20%, diluted earnings per share fell 53%, automotive revenue dropped 6%, and vehicle deliveries declined for the first time in a full year. The growing energy-storage business helped mask how much pressure the car business was under.

The important distinction is between sales and profitability. Tesla brought in slightly more money overall, but it kept less of that money after costs. That is a much more serious issue for an automaker than a one-quarter sales wobble, because it suggests the company had to use pricing and spending to defend demand.

Tesla sold fewer cars, and each car made less money
Tesla delivered 1,789,226 vehicles in 2024, compared with 1,808,581 in 2023. That is a decline of about 1.1% and Tesla’s first annual delivery decline.
A 1.1% unit decline is not a sales collapse by itself. The larger problem was what happened to automotive revenue and automotive margin:
- Automotive revenue fell from $82.419 billion to $77.070 billion, a 6% decline.
- Total automotive gross margin fell from 19.4% to 18.4%.
- Tesla said lower average selling prices and the Cybertruck ramp were the main pressures.
In practical terms, Tesla delivered almost as many vehicles as it did the year before but generated roughly $5.35 billion less automotive revenue. Lower prices, discounts and a less favorable product mix can explain why unit volume and revenue moved in opposite directions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Cybertruck also mattered. Ramping a new vehicle usually carries inefficiencies before production settles into a mature rhythm. Tesla identified the Cybertruck ramp as a drag on automotive gross margin, although lower per-vehicle costs, regulatory-credit revenue and FSD (Supervised) revenue provided some offset.
The energy business was the clear bright spot
Tesla’s energy-generation-and-storage business grew far faster than its automotive operation. Revenue rose 67%, from $6.035 billion in 2023 to $10.086 billion in 2024.
Energy gross margin improved from 18.9% to 26.2%, and Tesla deployed 31.4 GWh of energy-storage products—more than double its 2023 deployment level. That is not a rounding error or a side business with no effect on the accounts. It became a meaningful contributor to Tesla’s results and helped offset weaker car economics.
Services and other revenue also rose 27% to $10.534 billion. That category includes items such as paid services, used vehicles, Supercharging and other activities, so it is less useful as a simple measure of new-car demand. Still, its growth shows Tesla is no longer relying on vehicle sales alone to lift total revenue.

Why the fourth quarter looked especially ugly
The fourth quarter followed the same pattern, but the year-over-year profit comparison was unusually harsh.
| Q4 metric | Q4 2024 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $25.707 billion | +2% |
| Gross profit | $4.179 billion | −6% |
| Operating income | $1.583 billion | −23% |
| Operating margin | 6.2% | Down from 8.2% |
| GAAP net income | $2.317 billion | −71% |
| Diluted GAAP EPS | $0.66 | Down from $2.27 |
| Free cash flow | $2.031 billion | — |
Q4 revenue rose 2%, but gross profit fell 6%. Automotive revenue was down 8%, while energy revenue rose 113% and services-and-other revenue rose 31%. Tesla delivered a quarterly record of 495,570 vehicles and deployed a record-at-the-time 11.0 GWh of energy storage, yet the additional volume did not translate into stronger overall profitability.
There is also an accounting reason the 71% net-income decline looks so dramatic. In Q4 2023, Tesla released $6.54 billion of U.S. federal and certain state deferred-tax valuation allowances. That was a large one-time tax benefit. Comparing Q4 2024 with that unusually inflated prior-year profit exaggerates the apparent collapse in the underlying operating result.
That qualification does not make Q4 good. Operating income still fell 23%, and the operating margin dropped to 6.2%. It simply means the net-income percentage is not a clean measure of the year-over-year deterioration in Tesla’s car business.
Costs rose while Tesla was cutting prices
Tesla’s operating expenses increased 18% to $10.374 billion. Research and development spending rose 14%, primarily because of additional AI-program costs, while selling, general and administrative costs rose 7%.
The company also recorded $684 million in restructuring and other costs, including $583 million in employee-termination expenses. Those charges do not represent a permanent annual cost at the same level, but they still reduced 2024 earnings and cash available for other uses.
This created an uncomfortable combination for investors: Tesla was lowering vehicle prices to support demand, while spending more on future programs and absorbing restructuring costs. That may be defensible if the investment produces major new revenue streams, but it makes the current automotive business look less efficient.
Cash remained a strength, though investment consumed more of it
Tesla generated $14.923 billion in operating cash flow during 2024. It spent $11.339 billion on capital expenditure, mainly on AI-related infrastructure, factory expansion, and machinery and equipment. The result was $3.584 billion of free cash flow, down 18% from 2023.

Cash, cash equivalents and investments nevertheless rose from $29.094 billion to $36.563 billion. Tesla therefore finished the year with a substantial financial cushion. It has room to fund factories, compute capacity, vehicle programs and energy production without immediately needing to raise capital.
But cash on the balance sheet does not solve the margin problem. The question is whether those investments produce enough additional profit to compensate for weaker pricing in the existing vehicle lineup.

Tesla’s $7.091 billion profit was real GAAP net income, but not all of it came from selling cars, batteries or electricity-related products.
The company reported approximately $0.6 billion of mark-to-market gains on digital assets. Those gains helped reported GAAP net income but were not generated by Tesla’s operating businesses and can move in the opposite direction in a later period.
The Q4 2023 tax allowance release also inflated the comparison base. Together, these accounting items are why it is better to examine automotive margin, operating income and free cash flow alongside net income.
So, were Tesla’s 2024 results terrible?
For Tesla’s automotive business, the answer is close to yes. The company delivered fewer vehicles, brought in less automotive revenue, operated at a lower automotive margin and spent more on overhead and future technology. Its annual operating margin fell from 9.2% to 7.2%, while diluted EPS was cut in half.
For Tesla as a whole, “terrible” needs qualification. Revenue grew 1%, the company remained profitable, cash and investments increased, and energy storage had an excellent year. The company also delivered a record fourth quarter for vehicles and energy deployments.
The more accurate verdict is that 2024 exposed a weak core auto business while Tesla’s newer energy business grew quickly enough to soften the blow. Whether that is a temporary transition or the beginning of a longer period of slower automotive growth depends on future products, pricing power and whether the AI investment produces meaningful revenue.

The Bottom Line
Tesla’s 2024 results were not a loss-making disaster, but they were a serious warning for the car business.
