There is no verified five-step formula for getting rich selling cars. The article behind that promise is not fully accessible, so its complete list cannot be confirmed. What can be said responsibly is that sales skill, a sound compensation plan, dealership inventory decisions, and compliance all affect the business—without guaranteeing any salesperson a particular income.

What the original five tips actually say

TheRichest page titled “Here Are 5 Tips For Getting Rich Selling Cars” could not be accessed in full. Its search excerpt shows only one item: “Evaluate Your Selling Skills,” followed by advice to be honest about your abilities. The other four tips are not verifiable, so they should not be attributed to that article. The available search result does not establish a complete or current career guide.

1. Assess your selling skills honestly

The one visible tip is a useful starting point, but it is not a complete career plan. Consider how well you listen, explain options clearly, follow up, and handle a customer’s concerns without pressuring them. Those are practical areas to assess and improve; the excerpt itself does not establish a guaranteed path to wealth.

2. Understand how your pay is calculated

Before accepting a sales role, ask the dealership to explain its compensation plan in writing. Clarify how it handles commissions, bonuses, sales targets, and trade-ins, and what conditions apply to each. These are questions to ask—not a claim that any particular plan or income level is typical. Current, comparable salesperson earnings by dealership or pay plan are not established by the available sources.

3. Keep salesperson income separate from dealership gross profit

An FTC staff document citing the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association’s 2020 Used Car Industry Report says independent used-vehicle dealers averaged more than $6,000 in gross profit per vehicle, based on 2019 data. That historical dealer-level figure is not a salesperson’s commission or take-home pay. It does not account for an individual’s pay plan, dealership expenses, local conditions, or current earnings. Read the FTC staff document.

4. Recognize how inventory decisions affect the dealership

For dealership operators, buying and managing used-vehicle inventory is part of the profitability equation. NADA’s used-vehicle inventory guide treats inventory management and salesperson compensation incentives as dealer-management topics. The available guide extract does not quantify a guaranteed outcome, and inventory decisions carry risks that a salesperson’s individual pay cannot be inferred from dealer gross profit alone.

5. Sell used cars with the required disclosures

In the United States, most dealers who sell or offer more than five used vehicles in a 12-month period must comply with the FTC Used Car Rule. The rule generally requires a Buyers Guide to be displayed before a vehicle is offered for sale and provided to the buyer at sale. Maine and Wisconsin are exceptions to the federal rule because they have similar regulations; state requirements can also affect warranty and “as is” disclosures. Check the rules that apply where the dealership operates rather than assuming one national approach covers every transaction.

What the Buyers Guide tells customers

The Buyers Guide states whether a used vehicle is sold “as is” or with a warranty and describes warranty coverage. It also warns that oral promises can be difficult to enforce, encourages customers to get promises in writing, and recommends an independent mechanic’s inspection. If the transaction is conducted in Spanish, the FTC guide says a Spanish Buyers Guide must be displayed. The FTC Dealer’s Guide to the Used Car Rule explains the federal requirements and exceptions.

Advertise prices transparently

FTC automobile-pricing guidance says an advertised price should generally include dealer-required fees a buyer must pay to purchase the vehicle. Certain government-required charges paid directly by the buyer may be excluded. Consult the FTC’s automobile pricing FAQs for the guidance’s terms, and verify applicable state and local requirements.
