The 2026 Yamaha MT-07 and YZF-R7 share the same 689cc engine family, but they are built around different priorities. The MT-07 is the lower-priced, lighter naked bike with the lower seat; the R7 is a faired supersport with more adjustable front suspension and a broader electronics package. In the US, Yamaha lists the MT-07 at $8,599 and the R7 at $9,399 before destination, taxes, dealer fees, or accessories.
2026 Yamaha MT-07 vs. R7 at a glance
The figures below are from Yamaha’s US 2026 specifications, checked October 8, 2026. MSRP is the manufacturer’s starting price, not an out-the-door quote; fuel economy is estimated by Yamaha.

Yamaha defines wet weight as including standard equipment and fluids, including a full fuel tank. Its published figures make the MT-07 14 lb lighter and its seat one inch lower. The R7’s $800 higher starting MSRP and 2 mpg higher estimated fuel economy are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements or guarantees. See Yamaha’s 2026 MT-07 specifications and 2026 YZF-R7 specifications.
They share an engine, not a riding format
Both bikes use a 689cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC inline twin with an 80.0 x 68.6mm bore and stroke, 11.5:1 compression, YCC-T fuel injection, a six-speed transmission, and an assist-and-slipper clutch. Yamaha describes the R7’s engine as a 270-degree CP2 twin and notes shared intake duct shape and asymmetrical funnel lengths with the MT-07. The R7 is not a larger-displacement step up.

MT-07: naked-bike layout
Yamaha places the MT-07 in its Hyper Naked lineup. It has no full sport fairing, and its lower seat and lighter listed wet weight are concrete differences from the R7. Calling it the more upright, general-road-oriented format is an inference from its category and bodywork, not a promise that every rider will find it more comfortable.
R7: supersport bodywork
The R7 has compact aerodynamic fairing and a supersport designation. Yamaha says the 2026 model’s handlebar placement is higher and closer, its seat is lower than the previous version, and its tank shape has been redesigned. Even with those changes, the listed seat remains an inch higher than the MT-07’s. The fairing suggests more wind protection, but the official specifications do not establish all-day comfort, passenger comfort, or fit for a particular rider.

Suspension, brakes, and electronics
Front suspension adjustment
The MT-07 has a 41mm inverted KYB fork with 5.1 inches of travel; Yamaha’s listed specification does not give it the R7’s front adjustment range. The R7’s fork has 4.7 inches of travel and adjustment for preload, rebound, and compression. Both bikes offer preload and rebound adjustment at the rear, with different shock designs and travel figures. Adjustment gives the R7 more scope for setup changes, but it does not by itself prove that one bike handles better for every rider or road.
Rider aids and instruments
Yamaha lists YRC on the MT-07, with SPORT and STREET presets plus a customizable mode, three throttle maps, and switchable traction control. The R7’s stated package includes a six-axis IMU, three power-delivery modes, four traction-control levels including OFF, and four slide-control levels including OFF. It also has a five-inch full-color TFT, Y-Connect smartphone connectivity, Garmin StreetCross navigation support, and a third-generation Quick Shift System for clutchless upshifts and downshifts.

Both have dual 298mm front discs and ABS; Yamaha also lists a Brake Control System on the R7. These features describe equipment, not a guarantee against a crash or a substitute for rider judgment and skill.
Tires and fuel economy
The MT-07 is specified with Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires, while the R7 is specified with Bridgestone BATTLAX HYPERSPORT S23 tires. The brands and models differ, but the specifications do not establish which tire offers more grip in a particular condition. Yamaha estimates 57 mpg for the MT-07 and 59 mpg for the R7; actual consumption can vary, and those estimates are not independent tests.

Which one should you choose?
The MT-07 fits priorities such as
- A lower US starting price.
- A lower seat and lower listed wet weight.
- A naked-bike format and the MT-07’s stated rider-aid package.
The R7 fits priorities such as
- Supersport bodywork and the wind protection associated with a fairing.
- Front suspension adjustment for preload, rebound, and compression.
- A broader stated electronics package, including an IMU, slide control, and quickshifter.
Before deciding, sit on both and compare reach to the bars and footpegs, seat comfort, low-speed balance, and the posture you can sustain. Those are rider-specific fit questions; Yamaha’s specifications cannot settle them for you. The published US pages also do not provide a peak horsepower or torque comparison, and styling alone is not evidence that the R7 is faster. The reviewed sources contain no independent head-to-head ride test, owner survey, or measured comparative performance result, so claims about relative comfort, handling, and real-world speed would go beyond the available evidence.
