The 1UZ-FE, 2JZ-GE, 2UZ-FE, 2GR-FE and 1UR-FE make a defensible shortlist of Lexus engines with especially strong reputations for durability. In this practical ranking, the 1UZ-FE comes first for its historical importance and long-standing reputation, followed by the 2JZ-GE, 2UZ-FE, 2GR-FE and 1UR-FE.
This is an editorial ranking, not a measured reliability league table: comparable engine-specific failure rates or factory service data for all five have not been established. For a used-car buyer, the individual vehicle’s condition and maintenance records are more useful than a reputation alone.
How this reliability ranking works
The order weighs historical stature, reputation, reported longevity and range of applications. Those factors help explain why these engines are often discussed as durable Lexus powerplants, but they do not establish that one has a lower failure rate than another.
Toyota’s engine history documents the 1UZ-FE as a V8 and records VVT-i adoption in the 2JZ-GE, while Lexus Netherlands provides manufacturer-brand context on the engines and their place in Lexus history. Enthusiast lists and high-mileage accounts add reputation and anecdotal context, not controlled evidence. Lexus UK’s reported 98.3 per cent survey result covers 32 brands and 178 models up to five years old; it is brand-level context, not a score for any engine in this ranking.
#1 Best Overall
1. 1UZ-FE: the landmark Lexus V8
The 1UZ-FE earns the top position for its historical stature and durable reputation. Toyota’s corporate timeline identifies it as a V8, and Lexus Netherlands describes its construction and reputation favorably. It became a benchmark engine in the early Lexus era, making it the clearest historical anchor in this group.
That standing should not be confused with a guarantee about an old car. The vehicles that used this engine are now decades old, and condition, maintenance and use can vary substantially. A neglected example can be a worse purchase than a less celebrated engine with clear service records and a sound inspection.
Rank #2
2. 2JZ-GE: a naturally aspirated inline-six
The 2JZ-GE is the naturally aspirated Lexus application of the 2JZ family. Lexus Netherlands identifies it in Lexus models, and Toyota’s engine history records the adoption of VVT-i in the 2JZ-GE. Its reputation and historical prominence place it second here, but neither source provides a comparative failure rate.
What to check before buying
A maintenance reference flags timing-belt service for the 2JZ-GE. Check the vehicle’s service history and verify the correct interval and requirements for its specific model, year and market using factory guidance. If the work is undocumented, do not assume it has been completed; confirm the appropriate service with a qualified mechanic.

3. 2UZ-FE: the truck- and SUV-oriented V8
The 2UZ-FE belongs on the shortlist for its truck- and SUV-oriented applications and reputation for longevity. A recent ranking discusses high-mileage examples, but those accounts are creator-reported anecdotes and have not been independently verified here. The available evidence does not establish a primary comparative failure study or prove a statistical third-place finish.
For a prospective buyer, inspect the particular vehicle and review its records rather than treating reports of high-mileage examples as a prediction for every 2UZ-FE.

- Written from hand-on experience based on a vehicle teardown and rebuild using commonly available tools

4. 2GR-FE: a later V6 with a narrowly scoped campaign example
Lexus Netherlands describes the 2GR as a successor to the 2JZ family. Its place in the ranking reflects its reputation and later-generation role, not a quantified durability comparison with the older engines.
Understand the oil-hose notice’s scope
Lexus USA’s campaign notice says that “the rubber portion of the oil supply hose for the VVT-i actuator may degrade over time.” The notice applies to specified 2009 model-year Toyota Avalon and RAV4 vehicles equipped with the 2GR-FE; it does not establish that every 2GR-FE, or every Lexus fitted with one, has this issue. Check campaign eligibility for the exact vehicle by model and VIN with an authorized dealer or the relevant manufacturer source.

5. 1UR-FE: a modern V8 with limited comparable evidence
The 1UR-FE rounds out the list as a modern Lexus V8 family represented in recent high-mileage discussions. Those discussions also cover 1UR variants and applications, but do not establish a comparable reliability rate for the FE specifically. Keep the 1UR-FE distinct from the 1UR-FSE, and verify the engine variant, model year and market for any vehicle under consideration.
Which Lexus engine is the most reliable?
There is no evidence here to name a statistically proven winner. The 1UZ-FE ranks first on historical stature and reputation; the other four have credible reasons to make the shortlist, but the available sources do not support precise reliability odds or a guaranteed mileage outcome for any of them.
When shopping, use the engine’s reputation to guide what you investigate, not to replace that investigation. Prioritize a vehicle-specific service history, a condition check and confirmation of applicable maintenance or campaigns. For any engine, the actual car’s care and condition matter more than its place in an editorial ranking.
