AWD and 4WD can both send power to all four wheels, but the labels do not describe one universal design. AWD is often automatic and may be full-time or on-demand; many 4WD vehicles let the driver select modes, sometimes including low range. Which suits you depends on the specific vehicle, its operating instructions, tires, and the roads or terrain you drive.
How AWD and 4WD differ
All-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) describe families of systems, not fixed mechanical recipes. The most useful distinction is how a vehicle delivers power to its axles and how much the driver needs to control that process.
| What to compare | AWD | 4WD |
|---|---|---|
| How power reaches the wheels | May send power to both axles continuously, or drive mainly one axle and automatically add power to the other when needed. | Often offers driver-selectable drive modes; the exact modes and behavior vary by vehicle. |
| Driver input | Often operates automatically, though designs differ. | May require the driver to select a mode suited to the road or terrain. |
| Low range | Not established by the AWD label; check the vehicle’s specifications. | Some systems offer 4WD low for slow-speed, high-torque use on difficult terrain. |
| Best comparison method | Check the specific vehicle’s operating modes, manual, tires, ground clearance, and intended use rather than relying on the badge alone. | |
These are common patterns, not rules for every model. Terms such as “4×4” are also used differently, so they are not a reliable substitute for checking a vehicle’s actual system.
How AWD works
Full-time AWD
A full-time AWD system sends power to both axles during normal driving. Subaru describes its Symmetrical AWD as full-time, but that brand-specific description should not be applied to every AWD vehicle. Subaru’s AWD and 4WD comparison explains its terminology and use cases.

On-demand AWD
An on-demand system can normally drive one axle and automatically send power to the other when sensors detect a need. Subaru describes this arrangement as part-time AWD. In Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross Owner’s Manual, Dynamic Torque Control AWD is described as automatically varying between front-wheel drive and AWD according to driving conditions. Those examples illustrate different systems; they do not establish how another model works. Subaru’s AWD overview describes full-time and part-time arrangements.
How 4WD works
Many 4WD vehicles provide selectable modes such as two-wheel drive, 4WD high, and sometimes 4WD low. Low range is intended for slow travel with greater torque at the wheels, useful on difficult terrain when the vehicle is designed for that task. The available modes, shifting procedure, and surfaces on which they may be used depend on the vehicle; follow its owner’s manual rather than borrowing instructions from another model.

A model-specific example: Toyota Tacoma
Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma Owner’s Manual says to use 2H for normal driving on dry, hard-surfaced roads. It describes 4H for tracks where the tires can slide, including off-road, icy, or snow-covered roads. These instructions apply to that Tacoma manual, not to all 4WD vehicles.
Is AWD or 4WD better in snow, rain, or off-road?
Snow and slippery roads
Automatic AWD may be convenient when traction varies because the system can add power to another axle without the driver selecting a mode. That does not make AWD a substitute for suitable tires or careful driving. Subaru says both AWD and 4WD vehicles should use snow tires for the best winter performance. Neither drivetrain removes the limits of tire grip for braking or steering. Subaru’s comparison discusses winter use.

Rain and everyday driving
For everyday roads, compare the actual vehicle’s system and the conditions in its manual. AWD can provide automatic traction assistance in some designs; a 4WD system may call for the driver to select a mode and may restrict its use on certain surfaces. Do not assume the drivetrain label alone makes a vehicle safer or better suited to wet pavement.
Off-road use
A 4WD vehicle with low range may be better suited to demanding terrain when the manufacturer designed it for that use. But low range is only one part of off-road capability. Ground clearance, tires, vehicle design, the correct operating mode, and the terrain all matter. Some AWD vehicles can handle rough or slippery routes, but the label alone does not tell you their limits.

What to check before choosing a vehicle
- System behavior: Is it full-time, on-demand, or driver-selectable?
- Modes and procedure: Which modes are available, how are they engaged, and what surfaces or conditions does the manual specify?
- Low range: Is it available, and does your intended driving call for it?
- Tires: Are the tires appropriate for your climate and terrain, and do they meet the manufacturer’s fitment requirements?
- Vehicle-level capability: Compare ground clearance and intended use instead of inferring capability from AWD or 4WD alone.
- Fuel economy: Compare the specific vehicles’ published figures. The drivetrain label by itself does not establish a fuel-economy difference.
Tires matter with either system
AWD and 4WD can help deliver engine power, but neither removes the need for tires suited to the conditions. For winter driving, Subaru recommends snow tires for both types of vehicle. For replacement tires, Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross manual says to match the specified size, brand, tread pattern, and load capacity, and to use the recommended inflation pressure. Check your own vehicle’s manual for its requirements. Toyota’s 2026 Corolla Cross Owner’s Manual sets out those tire instructions for that model.
