That was 29% of the approximately 1,400 vehicles monitored at the Stirling Highway school crossing near McNeil Street; it is a result from that operation, not a current or ongoing tally.
What police recorded at the crossing
The Government of Western Australia said police monitored the crossing from 2:40pm to 4pm on Thursday, 22 February 2024, while two wardens managed the crossing. Of about 1,400 passing vehicles, 401 were recorded above the 40 km/h limit—29% of the traffic observed during that deployment.
The announcement reported these excess-speed bands:
| Recorded speed above the 40 km/h limit | Vehicles |
|---|---|
| 10–19 km/h over | 281 |
| 20–29 km/h over | 26 |
| 30–39 km/h over | 2 |
The announcement did not give a speed band for the other recorded speeding vehicles, so the published categories should not be treated as a complete breakdown.

What the figures do—and do not—show
The 401 vehicles were recorded during one deployment. The figures do not establish the usual speeding rate at the crossing, a trend over time, or why drivers exceeded the limit. They also do not show how many drivers were penalised.
What police said would happen next
WA Police Road Policing Command Commander Mike Bell said police would revisit the location and continue deployments during the new school-zone times. He said officers would use education or enforcement depending on the circumstances. Bell described the deployment’s statistics as “very concerning” and said 40 km/h school zones are designed to maximise the safety of children and traffic wardens.

The police announcement also said a warden at the crossing had been clipped by a vehicle at the end of 2023 and was still recovering when the announcement was published in March 2024. That incident was reported separately from the February 2024 operation; the announcement does not say it happened during the deployment.

The Shire of Peppermint Grove’s 2024 road-network review describes 40 km/h school zones on school days from 7:30–9am and 2:30–4pm. A 2026 report gives the same weekday periods for WA school zones. Check the signs at the location and current official guidance before relying on those hours for a particular journey.
