The most useful car emergency kit covers communication, first aid, visibility, lighting, warmth, water and food, battery support, tires and basic repairs. The 30-item checklist below synthesizes U.S.-oriented recommendations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and AAA; it is not a legally required universal list. Adapt it to your climate, route, passengers and vehicle equipment.
Communication, location and signaling
| Item | Why it matters and how to use it |
|---|---|
| 1. Charged mobile phone | Use it to call emergency services, roadside assistance or a trusted contact. NHTSA places a phone at the top of its kit list. |
| 2. Car phone charger | Carry a vehicle charger and the cable that fits your phone; NHTSA and AAA both recommend one. |
| 3. Backup battery pack | A charged power bank or battery-powered phone charger can help when the vehicle cannot supply power. AAA advises checking its charge periodically. |
| 4. Paper road map | A physical map provides backup navigation when a phone has no signal or battery. (NHTSA) |
| 5. Pen and notepad | Record an incident description, emergency numbers, directions or location clues. (AAA) |
| 6. Reflective warning triangles | Place warning devices where permitted and safe to alert approaching traffic to a disabled vehicle. (AAA) |
| 7. Road flares | Use only as directed and consider nearby dry vegetation, fuel and other fire hazards. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 8. White flag or other visible signal | A high-visibility marker can help rescuers or passing drivers locate you. (NHTSA) |
| 9. Reflective safety vest | Put it on before leaving the vehicle in low light or near traffic to improve your visibility. (AAA) |
First aid, water and personal needs
| Item | What to include or consider |
|---|---|
| 10. First-aid kit | Choose a kit suited to the passengers, inspect contents and replace expired supplies. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 11. Regular medicines | Carry medicines in line with each person’s care instructions, with an emergency supply where appropriate. (NHTSA) |
| 12. Drinking water | Store water in packaging suitable for your local temperatures and replace it as needed. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 13. Nonperishable snacks | Select foods occupants can eat safely, including children or people with dietary restrictions, and replenish them. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 14. Paper towels, rags or wipes | Useful for cleanup, checking fluids and handling roadside messes. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 15. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes | Keep both accessible for cleaning hands and high-touch surfaces. (AAA) |
Lighting, warmth and weather protection
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| 16. Flashlight | Essential for inspecting a vehicle or moving around safely after dark. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 17. Spare flashlight batteries | Carry the correct size and replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s guidance. (AAA) |
| 18. Emergency blanket | Provides compact protection from cold while you wait for help. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 19. Season-appropriate spare clothing | Pack coats, warm layers, socks, a change of clothes and towels suited to the season. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 20. Work gloves | Protect hands during basic roadside tasks and from cold or wet conditions. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 21. Rain protection | A poncho, raincoat or tarp helps keep people and supplies dry. (AAA) |
| 22. Ice scraper and snow brush | Keep these in the vehicle during freezing weather and clear windows before driving. (AAA) |
| 23. Small shovel | Useful for clearing snow or loose material around tires in winter or traction situations. (AAA) |
| 24. Traction material | Sand, salt or non-clumping cat litter can improve tire grip on slippery surfaces. (AAA) |
| 25. Windshield washer fluid | Carry compatible extra fluid, especially for long trips or dirty winter roads. (NHTSA) |
Battery, tire and basic vehicle support
| Item | Important qualification |
|---|---|
| 26. Jumper cables or portable jump starter | Use cables correctly or select a jump starter compatible with your vehicle; follow both vehicle and device manuals. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 27. Tire-pressure gauge | Check pressure against the vehicle placard or owner’s manual, not a generic target. (NHTSA) |
| 28. Vehicle-compatible jack and ground mat | Confirm the vehicle has the required jack points and equipment. A jack is not safe on every roadside surface or location; follow the owner’s manual and move to a safe place before lifting a vehicle. (NHTSA) |
| 29. Basic tool kit | A practical set may include a wrench, lug wrench, screwdriver and pliers. (NHTSA and AAA) |
| 30. Duct tape and cable ties | These can hold a loose part or temporarily address a hose problem, but they are stopgap measures, not lasting repairs. (NHTSA and AAA) |
Optional equipment for specific vehicles and trips
Some cars and routes call for additions rather than substitutions. AAA guidance identifies a tire inflator, sealant and tire-repair kit as possible flat-tire equipment, particularly when a vehicle has no spare. Check the spare’s pressure and learn the vehicle’s approved repair method; not every tire, wheel or tire-pressure-monitoring system supports the same solution.
- Winter routes: chains, de-icer and extra traction supplies may be appropriate where local rules and conditions require them.
- Vehicle-specific needs: extra fuses, a cutting tool or other equipment may be useful when the owner’s manual supports carrying and using them.
- Extended or remote travel: matches and a hand-crank radio are conditional additions, not universal essentials.
How to tailor and maintain the kit
Match the kit to the vehicle
Read the owner’s manual before attempting a jump, tire change or fuse replacement. Confirm battery location, jack points, spare-tire status and whether the car uses run-flat tires, a sealant system or another manufacturer-approved method.
Match it to people and conditions
Adjust medicines, food, water, clothing and first-aid supplies for children, older adults, pets, allergies, disabilities and medical needs. Add winter equipment before snow season and remove heat-sensitive supplies when necessary.

Buying a preassembled kit versus building your own
A preassembled roadside kit can save time, but contents vary. Compare each option against the checklist rather than assuming a larger package is better.
| Comparison point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Core coverage | Does it include communication, first aid, light, signaling, water, warmth, battery and tire support? |
| Vehicle compatibility | Will the jack, jump starter, inflator, sealant and tools work with your vehicle? |
| Seasonal fit | Are clothing, traction supplies and snow tools appropriate for your routes? |
| Access and portability | Can you reach critical items quickly, and can you carry the kit safely? |
| Maintenance | Which batteries, foods, medicines and chemical supplies need periodic replacement? |
| Duplication | Is equipment already supplied by the vehicle, such as a jack, spare or tire inflator, being counted twice? |
Roadside safety priorities
If a breakdown occurs, move as far from traffic as conditions allow, turn on hazard lights and call for help. Put on the vest and deploy warning devices only when you can do so without entering an unsafe lane. Stay inside the vehicle with seat belts fastened when leaving would expose you to traffic or severe weather. Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a portable jack.
