Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices can help electric vehicles use and manage electricity more efficiently, support smaller power electronics, and serve in charging systems. They are an enabling component—not a promise of a fixed range gain or faster charging. The outcome depends on the vehicle’s complete electrical and thermal design.
1. More efficient traction power conversion
An EV battery supplies direct current (DC), while the traction motor typically uses alternating current (AC). The inverter converts the battery’s DC into AC to drive the motor. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies SiC as a material used in EV inverters and says it can support higher efficiency and voltage than conventional silicon semiconductors. DOE states that SiC semiconductors can enable up to 10% longer range compared with traditional silicon semiconductors. That is a stated potential comparison, not a measured result that every SiC-equipped vehicle will achieve. Actual range depends on the whole powertrain and vehicle, including how the inverter, motor, battery, and thermal systems are designed and operated. DOE does not give a study year for this figure in the cited material.
2. Higher power density and smaller power electronics
SiC is a wide-bandgap semiconductor. In power electronics, wide-bandgap devices can help reduce component size and improve performance and reliability, according to the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). These potential benefits can give engineers more flexibility when packaging an inverter or other power-conversion equipment; they do not mean every SiC system will be smaller, cheaper, or more reliable than a comparable silicon system. NLR report on a SiC traction-inverter program
#1 Best Overall
NLR reported a specific result from a John Deere production-intent program: a 200-kilowatt, 1,050-volt SiC traction inverter with roughly 400% greater power density than previous silicon-only designs. That figure describes this heavy-duty equipment program, not a passenger-EV benchmark.
When comparing SiC and conventional silicon, the relevant engineering considerations include conversion losses and efficiency, operating voltage, power density and package size, thermal management and reliability, and total system cost. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, like-for-like consumer price comparison, and NLR describes some size and cost advantages as potential rather than guaranteed.

3. Charging and other power-conversion systems
SiC is used beyond the traction inverter. DOE lists EV onboard chargers and DC-to-DC converters among the power-electronics applications that use SiC. STMicroelectronics also describes SiC devices for charging stations. These uses put SiC in more of the systems that convert or manage electricity in and around an EV. Charging time also depends on the vehicle’s charging hardware, battery, charging station, and operating conditions; the cited sources do not support a universal SiC-related charging-time improvement.

What adoption figures do—and do not—show
In 2024, STMicroelectronics said its SiC devices had been supplied for more than five million passenger cars worldwide. This is the manufacturer’s cumulative supply figure, not an independent total of SiC-equipped cars or proof of a particular range or charging benefit.
