The Bugatti Divo is a 40-car, €5 million-at-launch hypercar developed to favor agility and cornering over the Chiron’s higher top-speed focus. It kept the Chiron’s W16 powertrain and platform, but received distinct aerodynamics, chassis tuning and a bespoke body. So why is the Bugatti Divo so special? These 25 facts explain its engineering, design and rarity—and separate Bugatti’s own performance claims from independent test results.
Why is the Bugatti Divo so special?
-
It was designed around corners
Bugatti developed the Divo as a handling-focused counterpart to the Chiron, with agility and cornering as priorities on winding roads. Company president Stephan Winkelmann summarized the intent: “The Divo has significantly higher performance in terms of lateral acceleration, agility and cornering. The Divo is made for corners.” (Bugatti’s 24 August 2018 world-premiere announcement.)
-
It premiered at The Quail in 2018
Bugatti unveiled the Divo publicly on 24 August 2018 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, in Monterey, California. The reveal followed customer appointments at which the limited run had already sold out.
-
Its name honors a racing driver
The Divo is named for Albert Divo, a French racing driver who competed for Bugatti. The marque credits him with two Targa Florio victories; its 2020 delivery announcement also credits him with six Grand Prix wins over a 20-year period.

It modernizes Bugatti coachbuilding
Bugatti presented the Divo as a modern interpretation of coachbuilding: customers could choose colors and materials, while engineers also developed a distinct technical setup. Head of Technical Development Stefan Ellrott said: “The modern interpretation of coachbuilding gave us engineers new freedom.”
-
Every car had its own customer specification
Bugatti’s final-delivery account says none of the 40 Divos was identical. Customers selected options including paint, leather and stitching, and many chose one-off production. That supports a claim of individualized specification, not that every component on every car was unique.
How many Bugatti Divos were made?
-
The production run was limited to 40
Bugatti announced a series of 40 cars, each at a net launch price of €5 million. That is the manufacturer’s announced price at launch, not a current resale valuation.
-
All 40 sold before the public reveal
Bugatti said the cars sold within weeks of initial customer appointments, before the August 2018 public unveiling. The announcement made the Divo an instant sellout, rather than a model buyers could order after seeing the finished car publicly.

What is the difference between a Bugatti Divo and a Chiron?
The Divo is based on the Chiron platform, but Bugatti gave it a separate body and a setup intended to improve cornering response. The comparison below reflects Bugatti’s published figures and claims, not independent back-to-back testing.
| Aspect | Bugatti Divo | Standard Chiron comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Development priority | Agility, lateral acceleration and cornering | Bugatti describes the Divo as the more corner-focused interpretation |
| Downforce | 456 kg total; Bugatti says 90 kg more than the Chiron | 90 kg less than the Divo, according to Bugatti’s comparison |
| Lateral acceleration | 1.6 g in handling mode, per Bugatti | No comparable Chiron figure stated in the cited Divo materials |
| Top speed | Limited to 380 km/h; no Chiron Top Speed mode | Higher maximum-speed focus, according to Bugatti’s positioning |
| Weight | Bugatti said it was 35 kg lighter than the standard Chiron | Reference vehicle for Bugatti’s stated 35 kg difference |
| Nardò handling circuit | Bugatti reported an eight-second faster lap than the Chiron | Comparison is Bugatti’s reported result; a full timing protocol is not provided |
| Production and personalization | 40 cars; customer-selected specifications | Not stated in the cited Divo materials |
-
Bugatti reported 90 kg more downforce
The manufacturer said the Divo generates 456 kg of total downforce, 90 kg more than the Chiron. These are Bugatti’s published figures, not the result of an independent test cited here.
-
It was claimed to be eight seconds quicker at Nardò
Bugatti reported that the Divo was eight seconds faster than the Chiron on the Nardò handling circuit. The release does not provide an independent test report or a full timing protocol, so the number should be understood as the manufacturer’s comparison.

It trades top speed for cornering emphasis
Bugatti capped the Divo at 380 km/h and said it lacks the Chiron’s Top Speed mode. The lower stated limit fits the car’s handling-first role; it does not mean the Divo uses a less powerful engine.
-
Bugatti said it was 35 kg lighter
The company attributed the claimed reduction versus a standard Chiron to measures including lightweight wheels, a carbon-fibre intercooler cover, fixed front diffuser flaps, reduced insulation, a lighter sound system and removal of some storage compartments. Bugatti’s technical sheet notes that the Chiron base model’s homologation value continues to apply to the listed DIN empty weight.

How does the Divo’s design help it corner?
-
The front spoiler manages both downforce and airflow
Bugatti says the wide front spoiler adds downforce and guides air toward the cooling inlets. The front air intakes and an optimized air curtain are intended to improve airflow around the car.
-
Brake cooling draws from four sources on each side
Bugatti describes four independent air sources on each side to help cool the brakes, a detail that links the bodywork to the demands of repeated hard braking.
-
The roof NACA duct feeds air rearward
The roof duct directs air toward the engine compartment and helps guide airflow toward the rear spoiler. Bugatti says its arrangement also reduces turbulence.
-
The rear spoiler spans 1.83 metres
Bugatti says the adjustable spoiler is 23 percent wider than the Chiron’s. Its angle varies with driving modes, and it can turn forward to act as an air brake.
